Ogbu and the debate on educational achievement: an exploration of the links between education, migration, identity and belonging
This paper looks at some of the issues raised by Ogbuβs work in relation to the education of different minority ethnic groups. Ogbu poses questions such as the value attached to education,
its links to the future and its measurable outcomes in terms of βsuccessβ as experienced by black participants. The desire for better life chances leads families to consider migration to a new country or resettlement within the same country, thus making migration both a local and a global phenomenon. As an example, attention is drawn to the situation facing South Asian
children and their families in the UK. In terms of ethnicity and belonging, the wider question that is significant for many countries in the West after βNine-Elevenβ is the education of Muslim children. A consideration of this current situation throws Ogbuβs identification of βautonomous minorityβ into question. It is argued that a greater understanding of diverse needs has to be
accompanied by a concerted effort to confront racism and intolerance in schools and in society, thus enabling all communities to make a useful contribution and to avoid the βriskβ of failure and disenchantment
A Case of Propofol-Induced Oropharyngeal Angioedema and Bronchospasm
Propofol (2,6-diisopropylphenol) is an ultrashort-acting sedative agent with sedative and amnestic effects that is used not only for anesthesia but also for sedation during minor outpatient procedures and endoscopic examinations. Rare cases of anaphylaxis following propofol administration have been reported in the medical literature. Documentation of anaphylaxis is often lacking because the cause and effect relationship is often hard to prove. Only a minority of patients get referred for allergy testing to confirm the offending drug. Here we report a 74-year-old woman who had an anaphylactic reaction with severe oropharyngeal edema and bronchospasm for a few minutes after receiving propofol during endoscopic examination. An allergy skin test was positive for both propofol and soybean. Soybean in the intralipid is one component of propofol, and we concluded that this anaphylaxis was caused by soybean
Critical Race Theory and Education: racism and anti-racism in educational theory and praxis
What is Critical Race Theory (CRT) and what does it offer educational researchers and practitioners outside the US? This paper addresses these questions by examining the recent history of antiracist research and policy in the UK. In particular, the paper argues that conventional forms of antiracism have proven unable to keep pace with the development of increasingly racist and exclusionary education polices that operate beneath a veneer of professed tolerance and diversity. In particular, contemporary antiracism lacks clear statements of principle and theory that risk reinventing the wheel with each new study; it is increasingly reduced to a meaningless slogan; and it risks appropriation within a reformist βcan doβ perspective dominated by the de-politicized and managerialist language of school effectiveness and improvement. In contrast, CRT offers a genuinely radical and coherent set of approaches that could revitalize critical research in education across a range of inquiries, not only in self-consciously "multicultural" studies. The paper reviews the developing terrain of CRT in education, identifying its key defining elements and the conceptual tools that characterise the work. CRT in education is a fast changing and incomplete project but it can no longer be ignored by the academy beyond North America
Education policy as an act of white supremacy: whiteness, critical race theory and education reform
The paper presents an empirical analysis of education policy in England that is informed by recent developments in US critical theory. In particular, I draw on βwhiteness studiesβ and the application of Critical Race Theory (CRT). These perspectives offer a new and radical way of conceptualising the role of racism in education. Although the US literature has paid little or no regard to issues outside North America, I argue that a similar understanding of racism (as a multifaceted, deeply embedded, often taken-for-granted aspect of power relations) lies at the heart of recent attempts to understand institutional racism in the UK. Having set out the conceptual terrain in the first half of the paper, I then apply this approach to recent changes in the English education system to reveal the central role accorded the defence (and extension) of race inequity. Finally, the paper touches on the question of racism and intentionality: although race inequity may not be a planned and deliberate goal of education policy neither is it accidental. The patterning of racial advantage and inequity is structured in domination and its continuation represents a form of tacit intentionality on the part of white powerholders and policy makers. It is in this sense that education policy is an act of white supremacy. Following others in the CRT tradition, therefore, the paperβs analysis concludes that the most dangerous form of βwhite supremacyβ is not the obvious and extreme fascistic posturing of small neonazi groups, but rather the taken-for-granted routine privileging of white interests that goes unremarked in the political mainstream
Diverse Bacterial PKS Sequences Derived From Okadaic Acid-Producing Dinoflagellates
Okadaic acid (OA) and the related dinophysistoxins are isolated from dinoflagellates of the genus Prorocentrum and Dinophysis. Bacteria of the Roseobacter group have been associated with okadaic acid producing dinoflagellates and have been previously implicated in OA production. Analysis of 16S rRNA libraries reveals that Roseobacter are the most abundant bacteria associated with OA producing dinoflagellates of the genus Prorocentrum and are not found in association with non-toxic dinoflagellates. While some polyketide synthase (PKS) genes form a highly supported Prorocentrum clade, most appear to be bacterial, but unrelated to Roseobacter or Alpha-Proteobacterial PKSs or those derived from other Alveolates Karenia brevis or Crytosporidium parvum

Restricting Microbial Exposure in Early Life Negates the Immune Benefits Associated with Gut Colonization in Environments of High Microbial Diversity
Background: Acquisition of the intestinal microbiota in early life corresponds with the development of the mucosal immune system. Recent work on caesarean-delivered infants revealed that early microbial composition is influenced by birthing method and environment. Furthermore, we have confirmed that early-life environment strongly influences both the adult gut microbiota and development of the gut immune system. Here, we address the impact of limiting microbial exposure after initial colonization on the development of adult gut immunity.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Piglets were born in indoor or outdoor rearing units, allowing natural colonization in the
immediate period after birth, prior to transfer to high-health status isolators. Strikingly, gut closure and morphological
development were strongly affected by isolator-rearing, independent of indoor or outdoor origins of piglets. Isolator-reared
animals showed extensive vacuolation and disorganization of the gut epithelium, inferring that normal gut closure requires
maturation factors present in maternal milk. Although morphological maturation and gut closure were delayed in isolatorreared
animals, these hard-wired events occurred later in development. Type I IFN, IL-22, IL-23 and Th17 pathways were
increased in indoor-isolator compared to outdoor-isolator animals during early life, indicating greater immune activation in
pigs originating from indoor environments reflecting differences in the early microbiota. This difference was less apparent
later in development due to enhanced immune activation and convergence of the microbiota in all isolator-reared animals.
This correlated with elevation of Type I IFN pathways in both groups, although T cell pathways were still more affected in
indoor-reared animals.
Conclusions/Significance: Environmental factors, in particular microbial exposure, influence expression of a large number
of immune-related genes. However, the homeostatic effects of microbial colonization in outdoor environments require
sustained microbial exposure throughout development. Gut development in high-hygiene environments negatively
impacts on normal succession of the gut microbiota and promotes innate immune activation which may impair immune
homeostasis
The isothiocyanate class of bioactive nutrients covalently inhibit the MEKK1 protein kinase
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Dietary isothiocyanates (ITCs) are electrophilic compounds that have diverse biological activities including induction of apoptosis and effects on cell cycle. They protect against experimental carcinogenesis in animals, an activity believed to result from the transcriptional induction of "Phase 2" enzymes. The molecular mechanism of action of ITCs is unknown. Since ITCs are electrophiles capable of reacting with sulfhydryl groups on amino acids, we hypothesized that ITCs induce their biological effects through covalent modification of proteins, leading to changes in cell regulatory events. We previously demonstrated that stress-signaling kinase pathways are inhibited by other electrophilic compounds such as menadione. We therefore tested the effects of nutritional ITCs on MEKK1, an upstream regulator of the SAPK/JNK signal transduction pathway.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The activity of MEKK1 expressed in cells was monitored using in vitro kinase assays to measure changes in catalytic activity. The activity of endogenous MEKK1, immunopurified from ITC treated and untreated LnCAP cells was also measured by in vitro kinase assay. A novel labeling and affinity reagent for detection of protein modification by ITCs was synthesized and used in competition assays to monitor direct modification of MEKK1 by ITC. Finally, immunoblots with phospho-specific antibodies were used to measure the activity of MAPK protein kinases.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>ITCs inhibited the MEKK1 protein kinase in a manner dependent on a specific cysteine residue in the ATP binding pocket. Inhibition of MEKK1 catalytic activity was due to direct, covalent and irreversible modification of the MEKK1 protein itself. In addition, ITCs inhibited the catalytic activity of endogenous MEKK1. This correlated with inhibition of the downstream target of MEKK1 activity, i.e. the SAPK/JNK kinase. This inhibition was specific to SAPK, as parallel MAPK pathways were unaffected.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>These results demonstrate that MEKK1 is directly modified and inhibited by ITCs, and that this correlates with inhibition of downstream activation of SAPK. These results support the conclusion that ITCs may carry out many of their actions by directly targeting important cell regulatory proteins.</p
Geo-neutrinos and the Radioactive Power of the Earth
Chemical and physical Earth models agree little as to the radioactive power
of the planet. Each predicts a range of radioactive powers, overlapping
slightly with the other at about 24 TW, and together spanning 14-46 TW.
Approximately 20 % of this radioactive power (3-8 TW) escapes to space in the
form of geo-neutrinos. The remaining 11-38 TW heats the planet with significant
geo-dynamical consequences, appearing as the radiogenic component of the 43-49
TW surface heat flow. The non-radiogenic component of the surface heat flow
(5-38 TW) is presumably primordial, a legacy of the formation and early
evolution of the planet. A constraining measurement of radiogenic heating
provides insights to the thermal history of the Earth and potentially
discriminates chemical and physical Earth models. Radiogenic heating in the
planet primarily springs from unstable nuclides of uranium, thorium, and
potassium. The paths to their stable daughter nuclides include nuclear beta
decays, producing geo-neutrinos. Large sub-surface detectors efficiently record
the energy but not the direction of the infrequent interactions of the highest
energy geo-neutrinos, originating only from uranium and thorium. The measured
energy spectrum of the interactions estimates the relative amounts of these
heat-producing elements, while the intensity estimates planetary radiogenic
power. Recent geo-neutrino observations in Japan and Italy find consistent
values of radiogenic heating. The combined result mildly excludes the lowest
model values of radiogenic heating and, assuming whole mantle convection,
identifies primordial heat loss. Future observations have the potential to
measure radiogenic heating with better precision, further constraining
geological models and the thermal evolution of the Earth.Comment: 48 pages, 11 figures, 8 table
