The Strong Electrostatic Adsorption (SEA) method was applied to the rational design of a promoted Co catalyst for Fischer–Tropsch (FT) synthesis. A series of Mn/Co/TiO2 catalysts were prepared by selective deposition of the [MnO4] anion onto the supported Co3O4 phase. Qualitative ICP-OES and XPS measurements of the prepared catalysts with increasing Mn loading displayed the preferential association of the Mn species with Co3O4 and not the TiO2 support. The SEA preparation method seemed to minimize the migration of Mn away from the Co to the TiO2 support during reduction procedures to ensure a more intimate interaction between the Mn and the Co species during FT reactivity measurements. This led to an increase in light olefins, C5+ selectivity and chain growth probability. It is anticipated that the SEA preparation method is a viable synthesis strategy for other promoted and/or bimetallic catalyst systems where intimate contact between the catalyst components is highly desired
High Power Cyclotrons for the Neutrino Experiments DAEδALUS and IsoDAR
DAEδALUS (Decay At rest Experiment for δcp At a Laboratory for Underground Science) has been proposed to measure the value of the CP violating phase delta through the oscillation of low energy muon anti-neutrinos to electron antineutrinos. With a single large detector, three accelerators at different distances enable the oscillation to be measured with sufficient accuracy. We have proposed the superconducting multi-megawatt DAEδALUS Supercinducting Ring Cyclotron (DSRC) as the means of producing the 800 MeV 12 mA protons required, through the acceleration of H2+, ions with highly efficient stripping extraction. The DSRC comprises twin ion sources and injector cyclotrons, followed by a booster. The injector cyclotron can also be used for a separate experiment, IsoDAR (Isotope Decay At Rest) in which low energy protons produce Lithium 8, and thus a very pure electron antineutrino source which can be used to measure, or rule out, short range oscillation to a sterile neutrino. We describe recent developments in the designs of the injector and the booster, and the prospects for the two experiments
Neutron Stars in a Varying Speed of Light Theory
We study neutron stars in a varying speed of light (VSL) theory of gravity in
which the local speed of light depends upon the value of a scalar field .
We find that the masses and radii of the stars are strongly dependent on the
strength of the coupling between and the matter field and that for
certain choices of coupling parameters, the maximum neutron star mass can be
arbitrarily small. We also discuss the phenomenon of cosmological evolution of
VSL stars (analogous to the gravitational evolution in scalar-tensor theories)
and we derive a relation showing how the fractional change in the energy of a
star is related to the change in the cosmological value of the scalar field.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figures. Added solutions with a more realistic equation

DNA variation in myoMIRs of the 1, 133, and 208 families in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small RNAs that bind to mRNAs and regulate gene expression. MyoMirs are miRNAs implicated in cardiogenesis. Some MyoMirs have been found deregulated in hearts from patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). DNA variants at these miRNAs could contribute to the risk
of developing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). To test this hypothesis we used single strand conformation analysis and direct sequencing to search for DNA variants in the mir-208a, miR-208b, miR-133a-1, miR-133a-2, miR-133b, miR-1-1, and miR-1-2 genes in patients with HCM (n=245), LVH secondary to hypertension (n=120), and healthy controls (n=250). We found several nucleotide variants. Genotyping of patients and healthy controls showed significantly associations between a 133a-1 polymorphism and HCM and a 133b polymorphism and hypertensive-LVH. We concluded that rare variants in these mature miRNAs would be rarely found among HCM patients, but miR-133a-1 and 133b polymorphisms could contribute to the risk of developing cardiac hypertrophy.this work was supported by grants from the Spanish Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias-Fondos FEDER European Union (FIS-00/0172), and Red de Investigación Renal-REDINREN (RD06/0016). Artificial intelligence techniques point out differences in classification performance between light and standard bovine carcasses
The validity of the official SEUROP bovine carcass classification to grade light carcasses by means of three well reputed Artificial
Intelligence algorithms has been tested to assess possible differences in the behavior of the classifiers in affecting the repeatability of
grading. We used two training sets consisting of 65 and 162 examples respectively of light and standard carcass classifications,
including up to 28 different attributes describing carcass conformation. We found that the behavior of the classifiers is different
when they are dealing with a light or a standard carcass. Classifiers follow SEUROP rules more rigorously when they grade standard
carcasses using attributes characterizing carcass profiles and muscular development. However, when they grade light carcasses,
they include attributes characterizing body size or skeletal development. A reconsideration of the SEUROP classification system for
light carcasses may be recommended to clarify and standardize this specific beef market in the European Union. In addition, since
conformation of light and standard carcasses can be considered different traits, this could affect sire evaluation programs to
improve carcass conformation scores from data from markets presenting a great variety of ages and weights of slaughtered animals

Transonic flutter analysis using a fully coupled density based solver for inviscid flow
This paper focuses on the coupling between the high fidelity aerodynamic model for the flow field and the modal analysis of a typical wing section to carry out flutter analysis. This coupled aeroelastic model is implemented in one of the most widely used open source CFD codes called OpenFOAM. The model is designed to calculate the structural displacement in the time domain based on the free vibration modes of the structure by constructing the numerical model directly from the modal analysis. Essentially a second order ordinary differential equation is solved for each mode as a function of the generalised coordinates. A density based solver using central difference scheme of Kurganov and Tadmor is used to model the flow field. Two main cases of transonic flow over NACA 64A010 are modelled for a forced pitching oscillation airfoil and a self-sustained aerofoil respectively. The self-sustained two degrees of freedom case is modelled for three different possibilities covering damped, neutral and divergent oscillations. Predicted results show very good agreement with the numerical and experimental data available in the literature
Connexin43 Inhibition Prevents Human Vein Grafts Intimal Hyperplasia.
Venous bypass grafts often fail following arterial implantation due to excessive smooth muscle cells (VSMC) proliferation and consequent intimal hyperplasia (IH). Intercellular communication mediated by Connexins (Cx) regulates differentiation, growth and proliferation in various cell types. Microarray analysis of vein grafts in a model of bilateral rabbit jugular vein graft revealed Cx43 as an early upregulated gene. Additional experiments conducted using an ex-vivo human saphenous veins perfusion system (EVPS) confirmed that Cx43 was rapidly increased in human veins subjected ex-vivo to arterial hemodynamics. Cx43 knock-down by RNA interference, or adenoviral-mediated overexpression, respectively inhibited or stimulated the proliferation of primary human VSMC in vitro. Furthermore, Cx blockade with carbenoxolone or the specific Cx43 inhibitory peptide 43gap26 prevented the burst in myointimal proliferation and IH formation in human saphenous veins. Our data demonstrated that Cx43 controls proliferation and the formation of IH after arterial engraftment
The usefulness of artificial intelligence techniques to assess subjective quality of products in the food industry
n this paper we advocate the application of Artificial Intelligence techniques to quality assessment of food products. Machine Learning algorithms can help us to: (a) extract operative human knowledge from a set of examples; (b) conclude interpretable rules for classifying samples regardless of the non-linearity of the human behaviour or process; and (c) help us to ascertain the degree of influence of each objective attribute of the assessed food on the final decision of an expert. We illustrate these topics with an example of how it is possible to clone the behaviour of bovine carcass classifiers, leading to possible further industrial applications
