Amylase activity in culture filtrate of Aspergillus chevalieri

    Get PDF
This study was carried out to determine the growth and production of amylase by Aspergilluschevalieri in a defined medium. A. chevalieri was grown in a synthetic medium containing starch as the sole carbon source. Culture filtrate exhibited amylase activity. Optimum enzyme activity was observed on the tenth day of incubation. The presence of NaCl and MgCl2 stimulated amylase activity while EDTA and HgCl2 in the reaction mixture caused a reduction in the activity of the enzyme. The activity of the enzyme was optimum at 35oC and pH 6.5. The amylase of Aspergillus chevalieri was heat labile, losing its activity completely after twenty minutes of heating at 70 oC. The amylase produced by this fungus is of significance in the brewing industry and pharmaceuticals. The observed properties would aid in preserving the enzyme and knowing optimum conditions for activity to assist in maximizing industrial output. Keywords: Amylase production, Aspergellus chevalieri, enzyme, brewing industry, pharmaceuticals

Regulations & exemptions during the COVID-19 pandemic for new medical technology, health services & data

The rapid evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic has sparked a large unmet need for new or additional medical technology and healthcare services to be made available urgently. Healthcare, Academic, Government and Industry organizations and individuals have risen to this challenge by designing, developing, manufacturing or implementing innovation. However, both they and healthcare stakeholders are hampered as it is unclear how to introduce and deploy the products of this innovation quickly and legally within the healthcare system. Our paper outlines the key regulations and processes innovators need to comply with, and how these change during a public health emergency via dedicated exemptions. Our work includes references to the formal documents regarding UK healthcare regulation and governance, and is meant to serve as a guide for those who wish to act quickly but are uncertain of the legal and regulatory pathways that allow new a device or service to be fast-tracked

Variety of idempotents in nonassociative algebras

In this paper, we study the variety of all nonassociative (NA) algebras from the idempotent point of view. We are interested, in particular, in the spectral properties of idempotents when algebra is generic, i.e. idempotents are in general position. Our main result states that in this case, there exist at least n1n-1 nontrivial obstructions (syzygies) on the Peirce spectrum of a generic NA algebra of dimension nn. We also discuss the exceptionality of the eigenvalue λ=12\lambda=\frac12 which appears in the spectrum of idempotents in many classical examples of NA algebras and characterize its extremal properties in metrised algebras.Comment: 27 pages, 1 figure, submitte

IACT observations of gamma-ray bursts: prospects for the Cherenkov Telescope Array

Gamma rays at rest frame energies as high as 90 GeV have been reported from gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). There is considerable hope that a confirmed GRB detection will be possible with the upcoming Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), which will have a larger effective area and better low-energy sensitivity than current-generation imaging atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes (IACTs). To estimate the likelihood of such a detection, we have developed a phenomenological model for GRB emission between 1 GeV and 1 TeV that is motivated by the high-energy GRB detections of Fermi-LAT, and allows us to extrapolate the statistics of GRBs seen by lower energy instruments such as the Swift-BAT and BATSE on the Compton Gamma-ray Observatory. We show a number of statistics for detected GRBs, and describe how the detectability of GRBs with CTA could vary based on a number of parameters, such as the typical observation delay between the burst onset and the start of ground observations. We also consider the possibility of using GBM on Fermi as a finder of GRBs for rapid ground follow-up. While the uncertainty of GBM localization is problematic, the small field-of-view for IACTs can potentially be overcome by scanning over the GBM error region. Overall, our results indicate that CTA should be able to detect one GRB every 20 to 30 months with our baseline instrument model, assuming consistently rapid pursuit of GRB alerts, and provided that spectral breaks below 100 GeV are not a common feature of the bright GRB population. With a more optimistic instrument model, the detection rate can be as high as 1 to 2 GRBs per year.Comment: 28 pages, 24 figures, 4 tables, submitted to Experimental Astronom

    Commutator Leavitt path algebras

For any field K and directed graph E, we completely describe the elements of the Leavitt path algebra L_K(E) which lie in the commutator subspace [L_K(E),L_K(E)]. We then use this result to classify all Leavitt path algebras L_K(E) that satisfy L_K(E)=[L_K(E),L_K(E)]. We also show that these Leavitt path algebras have the additional (unusual) property that all their Lie ideals are (ring-theoretic) ideals, and construct examples of such rings with various ideal structures.Comment: 24 page

Salmonella heterogeneously expresses flagellin during colonization of plants

    Get PDF
Minimally processed or fresh fruits and vegetables are unfortunately linked to an increasing number of food-borne diseases, such as salmonellosis. One of the relevant virulence factors during the initial phases of the infection process is the bacterial flagellum. Although its function is well studied in animal systems, contradictory results have been published regarding its role during plant colonization. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that Salmonella’s flagellin plays a versatile function during the colonization of tomato plants. We have assessed the persistence in plant tissues of a Salmonella enterica wild type strain, and of a strain lacking the two flagellins, FljB and FliC.The work carried out in the C.R.B. and J.R. laboratory has been granted by Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MCIU, Spain, RTI2018-095069-B-100) awarded to C.R.B. and J.R., and Proyectos de Excelencia (Junta de Andalucía; PY18-2398) awarded to C.B.
