    Open source repositories: Implications for libraries

    Software that is accepted as “Open source” should comply with 10 conditions which are itinerated in the paper. The paper subsequently describes the application of open source initiatives in the digital library context. Three open source digital library initiatives developed by the Digital Library Research Group at the Faculty of Computer Science and information Technology, University of Malaya are highlighted. These are; (a) MyManuskrip: digital library of Malay manuscripts; (b) MyAIS : Digital library of Malaysian scholarly journals and conference proceedings; and (d) DSpace@Um: a digital library of dissertations, theses and final year project reports. Other “free” systems such as EJUM: electronic journal of university of Malaya is also described to highlight the slight difference between open source and being free. The paper also describes the libraries involved in the initiatives and the changing eco-system which libraries must accept to embrace the open source culture

    Systems with inheritance: dynamics of distributions with conservation of support, natural selection and finite-dimensional asymptotics

    If we find a representation of an infinite-dimensional dynamical system as a nonlinear kinetic system with {\it conservation of supports} of distributions, then (after some additional technical steps) we can state that the asymptotics is finite-dimensional. This conservation of support has a {\it quasi-biological interpretation, inheritance} (if a gene was not presented initially in a isolated population without mutations, then it cannot appear at later time). These quasi-biological models can describe various physical, chemical, and, of course, biological systems. The finite-dimensional asymptotic demonstrates effects of {\it ``natural" selection}. The estimations of asymptotic dimension are presented. The support of an individual limit distribution is almost always small. But the union of such supports can be the whole space even for one solution. Possible are such situations: a solution is a finite set of narrow peaks getting in time more and more narrow, moving slower and slower. It is possible that these peaks do not tend to fixed positions, rather they continue moving, and the path covered tends to infinity at tt \rightarrow \infty. The {\it drift equations} for peaks motion are obtained. Various types of stability are studied. In example, models of cell division self-synchronization are studied. The appropriate construction of notion of typicalness in infinite-dimensional spaces is discussed, and the ``completely thin" sets are introduced

    From Dynkin diagram symmetries to fixed point structures

    Any automorphism of the Dynkin diagram of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra induces an automorphism of the algebra and a mapping between its highest weight modules. For a large class of such Dynkin diagram automorphisms, we can describe various aspects of these maps in terms of another Kac-Moody algebra, the `orbit Lie algebra'. In particular, the generating function for the trace of the map on modules, the `twining character', is equal to a character of the orbit Lie algebra.     An electrochemical investigation of the formation of CoSx and its effect on the anodic dissolution of iron in ammoniacal-carbonate solutions

    It has been found that the co-presence of cobalt (II) and thiosulphate ions in ammoniacal-carbonate solutions promotes the passivation of iron, under conditions in which it would otherwise continue to dissolve anodically. Electrochemical experiments have shown a relationship between the immersion time required for passivation and the formation of a solid species on the iron surface, which is thought to be implicated in the mechanism of passivation, whilst not being itself the protective species. Based on a combination of electrochemical, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) characterisation techniques, the said species has been identified as CoSx, resulting from the interaction of cobalt (II) and thiosulphate ions. It is thought to form as a product of the cathodic reactions taking place on the iron surface during its active dissolution. These findings are particularly relevant to the Caron process, in which the ammoniacal-carbonate solutions containing dissolved cobalt and thiosulphate ions are used to leach nickel and cobalt from pre-reduced laterite ores rich in metallic iron. Both the loss of cobalt into the CoSx layer and the passivation of iron and of its alloys with nickel and cobalt, are potential contributing factors to the low cobalt and nickel recoveries, which are typical of the Caron process. This study provides a better understanding of the conditions under which the CoSx layer forms and promotes the passivation of iron, and may therefore provide useful information to help minimise the effect this may have on the extraction efficiency of the process. In particular, at the cobalt and thiosulphate ion concentrations usually encountered at a Caron plant, the passivation of iron was found to be prevented by maintaining a high enough concentration of ammonia

    We develop an evaluation method for Web radio, and perform it to see what we can be learnt about seven prominent Web radio sites. We also evaluate a commercial FM radio station for control purposes. We present a taxonomy of Web radio, and we give our observations and conclusions on this evaluation

    Shear wave dissipation in planar magnetic X-Points

    The resistive dissipation of nonlinear shear wave disturbances is discussed. We consider an incompressible, “open” X-point geometry, in which mass and energy are free to enter and leave the reconnection region. An analytic treatment is possible which unifies many of the dynamic and steady-state X-point solutions obtained previously. We show that while field disturbances in the plane of the X-point have the potential for rapid energy release when suitably driven, perpendicular shear disturbances dissipate slowly, at a rate η1/2, where η is the plasma resistivity. This behavior can be understood in terms of the absence of flux pileup in nonplanar shear wave disturbances. We conclude that only planar shear waves have the potential for fast magnetic energy release
