Vitamins C and E downregulate vascular VEGF and VEGFR-2 expression in apolipoprotein-E-deficient mice
Anti-angiogenic therapy reduces both plaque growth and intimal neovascularization in apolipoprotein-E-deficient mice (apoE-/-). Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) has been suggested as playing a role in the development of atherosclerosis. We examined the hypothesis that VEGF and VEGF receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) expression is upregulated in apoE-/- and, since it could be driven by oxidative stress, tested whether dietary supplementation with vitamins C and E could downregulate it.Two-month-old apoE-/- received vitamin C combined with alpha- or beta-tocopherol for 4 weeks. Aortic VEGF and VEGFR-2 expression were measured by RT-qPCR and western blot.ApoE-/- showed significantly higher expression of aortic VEGF and VEGFR-2 mRNA (P<0.001) and protein (P<0.001) than wild-type mice, as well as increased plasma VEGF (P<0.001). Vitamin C and alpha-tocopherol significantly reduced aortic VEGF and VEGFR-2 expression in apoE-/- (P<0.001), circulating VEGF (P<0.01) and plasma lipid peroxidation (P<0.01). apoE-/- receiving vitamin C and beta-tocopherol showed diminished lipid peroxidation and VEGFR-2, but only partial reduction of VEGF expression. These data demonstrate that augmented VEGF and VEGFR-2 expression in apoE-/- vasculature can be downregulated by vitamins C and E, at least partially through oxidative stress reduction. This novel mechanism could contribute to explaining the beneficial effects of antioxidant vitamins in experimental atherosclerosis
Efficient and robust entanglement generation in a many-particle system with resonant dipole-dipole interactions
We propose and discuss a scheme for robust and efficient generation of
many-particle entanglement in an ensemble of Rydberg atoms with resonant
dipole-dipole interactions. It is shown that in the limit of complete dipole
blocking, the system is isomorphic to a multimode Jaynes-Cummings model. While
dark-state population transfer is not capable of creating entanglement, other
adiabatic processes are identified that lead to complex, maximally entangled
states, such as the N-particle analog of the GHZ state in a few steps. The
process is robust, works for even and odd particle numbers and the
characteristic time for entanglement generation scales with N^a, with a being

Analysis of a spatial Lotka-Volterra model with a finite range predator-prey interaction
We perform an analysis of a recent spatial version of the classical
Lotka-Volterra model, where a finite scale controls individuals' interaction.
We study the behavior of the predator-prey dynamics in physical spaces higher
than one, showing how spatial patterns can emerge for some values of the

Patchiness and Demographic Noise in Three Ecological Examples
Understanding the causes and effects of spatial aggregation is one of the
most fundamental problems in ecology. Aggregation is an emergent phenomenon
arising from the interactions between the individuals of the population, able
to sense only -at most- local densities of their cohorts. Thus, taking into
account the individual-level interactions and fluctuations is essential to
reach a correct description of the population. Classic deterministic equations
are suitable to describe some aspects of the population, but leave out features
related to the stochasticity inherent to the discreteness of the individuals.
Stochastic equations for the population do account for these
fluctuation-generated effects by means of demographic noise terms but, owing to
their complexity, they can be difficult (or, at times, impossible) to deal
with. Even when they can be written in a simple form, they are still difficult
to numerically integrate due to the presence of the "square-root" intrinsic
noise. In this paper, we discuss a simple way to add the effect of demographic
stochasticity to three classic, deterministic ecological examples where
aggregation plays an important role. We study the resulting equations using a
recently-introduced integration scheme especially devised to integrate
numerically stochastic equations with demographic noise. Aimed at scrutinizing
the ability of these stochastic examples to show aggregation, we find that the
three systems not only show patchy configurations, but also undergo a phase

Holonomic quantum gates: A semiconductor-based implementation
We propose an implementation of holonomic (geometrical) quantum gates by
means of semiconductor nanostructures. Our quantum hardware consists of
semiconductor macroatoms driven by sequences of ultrafast laser pulses ({\it
all optical control}). Our logical bits are Coulomb-correlated electron-hole
pairs (excitons) in a four-level scheme selectively addressed by laser pulses
with different polarization. A universal set of single and two-qubit gates is
generated by adiabatic change of the Rabi frequencies of the lasers and by

Numerosas áreas de las sierras chicas han experimentado una gran pérdida de vegetación natural y de germoplasma nativo, como consecuencia del crecimiento urbano y de la extracción de plantas sin criterios conservacionistas. El valle de Paravachasca es un área turística que presenta una riqueza florística con especies de valioso potencial como ornamentales. El objetivo de este estudio es promover el conocimiento y la utilización sustentable de los recursos vegetales regionales, proponiendo la incorporación de especies de valor ornamental en espacios verdes y jardines regionales y urbanos
Discriminating the short-term action of root and foliar application of humic acids on plant growth: emerging role of jasmonic acid
Humic substances (HS, fulvic and humic acids) are widely used as fertilizers or plant growth stimulants, although their mechanism of action still remains partially unknown. Humic substances may be applied either directly to the soil or as foliar sprays. Despite both kind of application are commonly used in agricultural practices, most of the studies regarding the elicited response in plants induced by HS are based on the root-application of these substances. The present work aimed at discriminating between the mechanisms of action of foliar application versus root application of a sedimentary humic acid (SHA) on plant development. For this purpose, six markers related to plant phenotype, plant morphology, hormonal balance and root-plasma membrane H+-ATPase were selected. Both application strategies improved the shoot and root growth. Foliar applied- and root applied-SHA shared the capacity to increase the concentration of indole-3-acetic acid in roots and cytokinins in shoots. However, foliar application did not lead to short-term increases in either abscisic acid root-concentration or root-plasma membrane H+-ATPase activity which are, however, two crucial effects triggered by SHA root-application. Both application modes increased the root concentrations of jasmonic acid and jasmonoyl-isoleucine. These hormonal changes caused by foliar application could be a stress-related symptom and connected to the loss of leaves trichomes and the diminution of chloroplasts size seen by scanning electron microscopy. These results support the hypothesis that the beneficial effects of SHA applied to roots or leaves may result from plant adaptation to a mild transient stress caused by SHA application
Cross-country migration linked to people who inject drugs challenges the long-term impact of national HCV elimination programmes
To the Editor:
As of 2018, the majority of Western European countries – including Spain – have lifted restrictions to therapy based on disease severity in the context of HCV infections.1 Long overdue, most national elimination programmes now also include access to care for people who inject drugs (PWID), 2 who are at the core of ongoing HCV transmission.3 Macías et al.4 have recently shown in this Journal that high viral cure rates can be achieved in this group, hereby providing evidence that targeting PWID in treatment programmes is worthwhile. However, the extent to which such national efforts can reduce the HCV burden not only depends on the uptake into care and treatment success rates, it is also determined by the relative importance of within-country transmission and virus importation from elsewhere.
As the chronic nature of most HCV infections hampers reliably reconstructing contact networks from patient interviews, virus genetic data can be a valuable alternative source of information for elucidating the geographic history of virus lineages (e.g. [5], [6]). Using such data, we have recently shown that for the most prevalent subtype among PWID in Spain (40%, 7), HCV1a, infections often link to infections abroad – in recent years >50% link to Western European countries, mostly European Union (EU) member states – as opposed to other infections ..
