Aspectos de la respuesta inmune innata en las infecciones intramamarias causadas por Staphylococcus aureus en bovinos
ResumenStaphylococcus aureus es el principal agente causante de mastitis bovina en Argentina y en el mundo. Esta bacteria ocasiona infecciones crónicas que generan importantes pérdidas a los productores y la industria lechera. El objetivo de este artículo es caracterizar los mecanismos que intervienen en la infección causada por S. aureus en la glándula mamaria bovina, evaluando dos aspectos diferentes del proceso infeccioso: por un lado, lo vinculado con la respuesta inmune innata por parte del hospedador, y por otro, la capacidad de la bacteria para evadir el sistema inmune e interactuar con diferentes tipos celulares. La exploración de la interacción de S. aureus con el sistema inmune de la glándula mamaria bovina permitirá identificar blancos para delinear nuevas alternativas preventivas o curativas, que contribuyan a evitar o eliminar las infecciones causadas por este organismo.AbstractStaphylococcus aureus is the pathogen most frequently isolated from bovine mastitis worldwide, causing chronic intramammary infections that limit profitable dairying. The objective of this article is to characterize the mechanisms involved in S. aureus mammary gland infections considering two different aspects of the infectious process; on the one hand, the aspects involved in the host innate immune response and on the other hand, the capacity of this organism to evade the immune system and interact with different cell types. The exploration of S. aureus interactions with the immune response of bovine mammary gland will help identify targets to outline new preventive or curative alternatives for intramammary infections caused by this organism
Effect of dietary organic selenium on muscle proteolytic activity and water-holding capacity in pork
This study evaluates the effect of dietary selenium (Se) supplementation source (organic, Se-enriched yeast; SY vs. inorganic, sodium selenite; SS), dose (0.2: L vs. 0.4: H mg/kg) and the combination of Se and vitamin E (VITE + SS) for 26 days on drip loss, TBARS, colour changes, myofibrillar protein pattern and proteolysis in pork. The lowest water losses were observed in the SY-H group when compared to the others. SY-H and VITE + SS groups presented lower myofibrillar protein hydrolysis/oxidation. VITE + SS supplementation also resulted in higher PRO, TRP and PHE content at days 2 and 7, whereas the SY group showed increased GLY and CAR and tended to have higher TAU and ANS at day 2. The myofibrillar fragmentation index was not modified by the dietary treatment; however, at day 8, it tended to be higher in groups supplemented with SeY and VITE + SS. Femtosecond pump/supercontinuum-probe spectroscopy: Optimized setup and signal analysis for single-shot spectral referencing
A setup for pump/supercontinuum-probe spectroscopy is described which (i) is optimized to cancel fluctuations of the probe light by single-shot referencing, and (ii) extends the probe range into the near-uv (1000–270 nm). Reflective optics allow 50 μm spot size in the sample and upon entry into two separate spectrographs. The correlation γsame between sample and reference readings of probe light level at every pixel exceeds 0.99, compared to γconsec<0.92 reported for consecutive referencing. Statistical analysis provides the confidence interval of the induced optical density, ΔOD. For demonstration we first examine a dye (Hoechst 33258) bound in the minor groove of double-stranded DNA. A weak 1.1 ps spectral oscillation in the fluorescence region, assigned to DNA breathing, is shown to be significant. A second example concerns the weak vibrational structure around t=0 which reflects stimulated Raman processes. Zooplankton composition and distribution off the coast of Galicia, Spain
During June and September 1984, zooplankton samples were collected with other
hydrographic and biological data along the Galician coast (NW of Spain). In June copepods
contributed -60% to the total zooplankton community, with larvaceans, siphonophores and
cladocerans also abundant. In September >90% of the zooplankton sampled were copepods. The
dominant species of copepods in both June and September were Acartia e/ausi, Paracalanus parvus
and Temora longicornis. The meroplankton was dominated by echinoderms, bryozoans, barnacle
larvae and bivalve larvae. In June the average zooplankton biomass was 31.08 mg e m-3; the
September average was 41.69 mg e m-3 The relationship between the slopes of the regression
equations (biomass versus abundance) suggests that the zooplankton assemblage in June was
composed by larger animals than in September. The major concentration of zooplankton was
between O and SO m, with both June and September daytime surface samples having 6-7 times the
amount of organisms than the lower water column (50-100 m). There were no distinct differences in
total zooplankton abundances at the inshore and offshore stations; however, the inshore stations
often had a higher percentage of meroplankton than the offshore stations. In June zooplankton
abundance at the northern transects and the western transects was similar. In September there were
greater concentrations of zooplankton in the western Galician shelf as compared with the northern
shelf. These differences in the horizontal distribution of the zooplankton were related to upwelling

Activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein controls AMPAR endocytosis through a direct interaction with clathrin-adaptor protein 2
The activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated (Arc) protein controls synaptic strength by facilitating AMPA receptor (AMPAR) endocytosis. Here we demonstrate that Arc targets AMPAR to be internalized through a direct interaction with the clathrin-adaptor protein 2 (AP-2). We show that Arc overexpression in dissociated hippocampal neurons obtained from C57BL/6 mouse reduces the density of AMPAR GluA1 subunits at the cell surface and reduces the amplitude and rectification of AMPAR-mediated miniature-EPSCs (mEPSCs). Mutations of Arc, that prevent the AP-2 interaction reduce Arc-mediated endocytosis of GluA1 and abolish the reduction in AMPAR-mediated mEPSC amplitude and rectification. Depletion of the AP-2 subunit µ2 blocks the Arc-mediated reduction in mEPSC amplitude, an effect that is restored by reintroducing µ2. The Arc-AP-2 interaction plays an important role in homeostatic synaptic scaling as the Arc-dependent decrease in mEPSC amplitude, induced by a chronic increase in neuronal activity, is inhibited by AP-2 depletion. These data provide a mechanism to explain how activity-dependent expression of Arc decisively controls the fate of AMPAR at the cell surface and modulates synaptic strength, via the direct interaction with the endocytic clathrin adaptor AP-2
High frequency resonant experiments in Fe molecular clusters
Precise resonant experiments on Fe magnetic clusters have been
conducted down to 1.2 K at various tranverse magnetic fields, using a
cylindrical resonator cavity with 40 different frequencies between 37 GHz and
110 GHz. All the observed resonances for both single crystal and oriented
powder, have been fitted by the eigenstates of the hamiltonian . We have identified the
resonances corresponding to the coherent quantum oscillations for different
