Modelling surface heat exchanges from a concrete block to the environment
The presented problem was to determine an appropriate heat transfer boundary condition at the surface of a concrete slab exposed to the environment. The condition obtained involves solar radiation and convective heat transfer, other terms were shown to be small compared to these. It is shown that this boundary condition leads to a temperature variation that has qualitative agreement with experiments carried out by the Cement and Concrete Institute
Fracturing rock with ultra high pressure water
Modelling issues are considered for the process of cracking rock in mines using ultra high pressure water. The elevated pressures are caused by the ignition of a propellant and may be as large as 1000MPa. We first consider time, length and pressure scales and then derive a model for the propagation of a two-dimensional crack. A number of aspects of this model are considered and similarity solutions and behaviour near the crack tip are investigated. Consideration is given to a simplified model where the elastic component of the interaction between the rock and the fluid is handled using an elementary closure law: in this case much progress may be made and closed-form solutions may be determined. Conditions are also identified where a model based on “impulsive” lubrication theory is appropriate. However, this leads to a very challenging problem. Finally, some other ways of extending the model to include (for example) fluid leak-off into the rock are discussed
Piped water cooling of concrete dams
Piped water is used to remove hydration heat from concrete dams during construction. By examining simple models we obtain an estimate for the temperature rise along the pipe network and within the concrete. To leading order, for practically useful networks, the temperature distribution is quasi-steady, so that exact analytic solutions are obtained. The temperature in the water increases linearly with distance along the pipe and varies logarithmically with radial distance from the pipe in the concrete. Using these results we obtained estimates for the optimal spacing of pipes and pipe length. Some preliminary work on optimal network design has been done. This is work in progress
Void elimination in screen printed thick film dielectric pastes
The problem is to understand the mechanisms for the formation and evolution of defects in wet screen printed layers. The primary objective is to know how best to alter the properties of the paste (rather than the geometry of the screen printing process itself) in order to eliminate the defects.
With these goals in mind the work done during the Study Group reported here was as follows; to describe a simple model for the closure of craters, a model for the partial closure of vias, a possible mechanism for the formation of pinholes and finally a more detailed consideration of the screen printing process
Nonsingular instantons for the creation of open universes
We show that the instability of the singular Vilenkin instanton describing
the creation of an open universe can be avoided using, instead of a minimally
coupled scalar field, an axionic massless scalar field which gives rise to the
Giddings-Strominger instanton. However, if we replace the singularity of the
Hawking Turok instanton for an axionic wormhole some interpretational and
technical difficulties would appear which can be overcome by introducing a
positive cosmological constant in the action. This would make the instanton
finite and free constant in the action. This would make the instanton finite
and free from any instabilities.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex. A new section on the instantonic global structure
and a figure have been added. To appear in Phys. Rev.
The High Redshift Integrated Sachs-Wolfe Effect
In this paper we rely on the quasar (QSO) catalog of the Sloan Digital Sky
Survey Data Release Six (SDSS DR6) of about one million photometrically
selected QSOs to compute the Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect at high
redshift, aiming at constraining the behavior of the expansion rate and thus
the behaviour of dark energy at those epochs. This unique sample significantly
extends previous catalogs to higher redshifts while retaining high efficiency
in the selection algorithm. We compute the auto-correlation function (ACF) of
QSO number density from which we extract the bias and the stellar
contamination. We then calculate the cross-correlation function (CCF) between
QSO number density and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature
fluctuations in different subsamples: at high z>1.5 and low z<1.5 redshifts and
for two different choices of QSO in a conservative and in a more speculative
analysis. We find an overall evidence for a cross-correlation different from
zero at the 2.7\sigma level, while this evidence drops to 1.5\sigma at z>1.5.
We focus on the capabilities of the ISW to constrain the behaviour of the dark
energy component at high redshift both in the \LambdaCDM and Early Dark Energy
cosmologies, when the dark energy is substantially unconstrained by
observations. At present, the inclusion of the ISW data results in a poor
improvement compared to the obtained constraints from other cosmological
datasets. We study the capabilities of future high-redshift QSO survey and find
that the ISW signal can improve the constraints on the most important
cosmological parameters derived from Planck CMB data, including the high
redshift dark energy abundance, by a factor \sim 1.5.Comment: 20 pages, 18 figures, and 7 table
Old Inflation in String Theory
We propose a stringy version of the old inflation scenario which does not
require any slow-roll inflaton potential and is based on a specific example of
string compatification with warped metric. Our set-up admits the presence of
anti-D3-branes in the deep infrared region of the metric and a false vacuum
state with positive vacuum energy density. The latter is responsible for the
accelerated period of inflation. The false vacuum exists only if the number of
anti-D3-branes is smaller than a critical number and the graceful exit from
inflation is attained if a number of anti-D3-branes travels from the
ultraviolet towards the infrared region. The cosmological curvature
perturbation is generated through the curvaton mechanism.Comment: 31 pages, 3 figures; typos corrected and reference adde
Counter-propagating entangled photons from a waveguide with periodic nonlinearity
The conditions required for spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a
waveguide with periodic nonlinearity in the presence of an unguided pump field
are established. Control of the periodic nonlinearity and the physical
properties of the waveguide permits the quasi-phase matching equations that
describe counter-propagating guided signal and idler beams to be satisfied. We
compare the tuning curves and spectral properties of such counter-propagating
beams to those for co-propagating beams under typical experimental conditions.
We find that the counter-propagating beams exhibit narrow bandwidth permitting
the generation of quantum states that possess discrete-frequency entanglement.
Such states may be useful for experiments in quantum optics and technologies
that benefit from frequency entanglement.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.
Current induced switching of magnetic domains to a perpendicular configuration
In a ferromagnet--normal-metal--ferromagnet trilayer, a current flowing
perpendicularly to the layers creates a torque on the magnetic moments of the
ferromagnets. When one of the contacts is superconducting, the torque not only
favors parallel or antiparallel alignment of the magnetic moments, as is the
case for two normal contacts, but can also favor a configuration where the two
moments are perpendicular. In addition, whereas the conductance for parallel
and antiparallel magnetic moments is the same, signalling the absence of giant
magnetoresistance in the usual sense, the conductance is greater in the
perpendicular configuration. Thus, a negative magnetoconductance is predicted,
in contrast with the usual giant magnetoresistance.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, major rewriting of the technical par
String Cosmology: A Review
We give an overview of the status of string cosmology. We explain the
motivation for the subject, outline the main problems, and assess some of the
proposed solutions. Our focus is on those aspects of cosmology that benefit
from the structure of an ultraviolet-complete theory.Comment: 55 pages. v2: references adde
