    Arrest of flow and emergence of activated processes at the glass transition of a suspension of particles with hard sphere-like interactions

    By combining aspects of the coherent and self intermediate scattering functions, measured by dynamical light scattering on a suspension of hard sphere-like particles, we show that the arrest of particle number density fluctuations spreads from the position of the main structure factor peak. Taking the velocity auto-correlation function into account we propose that as density fluctuations are arrested the system's ability to respond to diffusing momentum currents is impaired and, accordingly, the viscosity increases. From the stretching of the coherent intermediate scattering function we read a quantitative manifestation of the undissipated thermal energy, the source of those, ergodicity restoring, processes that short-circuit the sharp transition to a perfect glass.Comment: 9 pages, 4 figure

    Efficacy of Different Pet Treat Formulations to Prevent Infestation by the Mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae

    The pet food industry is a major part of the high-value processed food market in the USA and worldwide. Pest control associated with pet foods is an important activity. The mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae is a prolific cosmopolitan species that can infests high-value pet treats undetected until the infestations increase to very large numbers. Propylene glycol is a food-safe additive used to prevent mite infestations (Zhang et al., 2018; Abbar et al. 2015). Unfortunately, propylene glycol in certain foods can harm pets, and many companies are changing formulations. Here we conducted forced infestation of mites on three experimental pet treats and compared these to the current product that contains propylene glycol for susceptibility to mite infestation. We confirmed that the current product with propylene glycol did not support any mite population growth after a forced infestation with 20 mites. Two of the test formulations showed promise in preventing mite infestation, but one formulation was clearly susceptible to mites

    On the Born-Oppenheimer approximation of diatomic molecular resonances

    We give a new reduction of a general diatomic molecular Hamiltonian, without modifying it near the collision set of nuclei. The resulting effective Hamiltonian is the sum of a smooth semiclassical pseudodifferential operator (the semiclassical parameter being the inverse of the square-root of the nuclear mass), and a semibounded operator localised in the elliptic region corresponding to the nuclear collision set. We also study its behaviour on exponential weights, and give several applications where molecular resonances appear and can be well located.Comment: 22 page

    Final-State Interactions in the Superscaling Analysis of Neutral-Current Quasielastic Neutrino Scattering

    Effects of strong final-state interactions in the superscaling properties of neutral-current quasielastic neutrino cross sections are investigated using the Relativistic Impulse Approximation as guidance. First- and second-kind scaling are analyzed for neutrino beam energies ranging from 1 to 2 GeV for the cases of 12C, 16O and 40Ca. Different detection angles of the outgoing nucleon are considered in order to sample various nucleon energy regimes. Scaling of the second kind is shown to be very robust. Validity of first-kind scaling is found to be linked to the kinematics of the process. Superscaling still prevails even in the presence of very strong final-state interactions, provided that some kinematical restrains are kept, and the conditions under which superscaling can be applied to predict neutral-current quasielastic neutrino scattering are determined.Comment: 39 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication in Phys.     New Measurements with Stopped Particles at the LHC

    Metastable particles are common in many models of new physics at the TeV scale. If charged or colored, a reasonable fraction of all such particles produced at the LHC will stop in the detectors and give observable out of time decays. We demonstrate that significant information may be learned from such decays about the properties (e.g. charge or spin) of this particle and of any other particles to which it decays, for example a dark matter candidate. We discuss strategies for measuring the type of decay (two- vs three-body), the types of particles produced, and the angular distribution of the produced particles using the LHC detectors. We demonstrate that with O(10-100) observed decay events, not only can the properties of the new particles be measured but indeed even the Lorentz structure of the decay operator can be distinguished in the case of three-body decays. These measurements can not only reveal the correct model of new physics at the TeV scale, but also give information on physics giving rise to the decay at energy scales far above those the LHC can probe directly.Comment: 31 pages, 6 figures.     Far infrared transmission experiments are performed on ultrathin epitaxial graphite samples in a magnetic field.
