Introduction: Legal Form and Cultural Symbol – Music, Copyright and Information Studies
Writers in information and communication studies often assume the stability of
objects under investigation: network nodes, databases, information. Legal writers in
the intellectual property tradition often assume that cultural artefacts exist as objects
prior to being governed by copyright law. Both assumptions are fallacious. This
introduction conceptualises the relationship of legal form and cultural symbol.
Starting from an understanding of copyright law as part of systems of production (in
the sense of Peterson 1976), it is argued that copyright law constructs the artefacts it
seeks to regulate as objects that can be bought and sold. In doing so, the legal and
aesthetic logic of cultural symbols may clash, as in the case of digital music (the
central focus of this special issue)

Transgressive bodies in the work of Julie Doucet, Fabrice Neaud and Jean-Christophe Menu: towards a theory of the 'autobioBD'
As the comic book, and more precisely its exceptionally francophone doppelganger, la bande dessinée, begins to fulfil its potential as 'the Ninth Art', the range of styles, reading contexts, and genres which constitute the form as a signifying practice has consequently expanded. Consideration of 'what a comic is', such as is found in the works of Thierry Groensteen and Benoît Peeters1 needs therefore to be complemented by a range of subsidiary questions addressing not only 'what kinds of comics there are', but, as an integral part of those inquiries, how different comic genres signify, and how the enunciative and representational functions deployed by each might be conceptualised. This paper considers the work of three Francophone comic artists, Fabrice Neaud and Jean-Christophe Menu, both French, and the Québecoise Julie Doucet, all of whom could be considered as proponents of the genre of BD we will call 'autobiocomics'. It will be argued that Neaud and Doucet, through their exploration of ontologies of presence and self-representation, work against the visual order of the phallocentric and heteronormative, an order which Menu appears to replicate but ultimately calls into question
Post-operative rehabilitation after PIP joint arthroplasty with early active motion: A retrospective review of outcomes
We present a retrospectively review of outcomes of the first fifteen patients who underwent proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthroplasty and were treated using the same early active motion rehabilitation regime introduced by the therapy department at Mount Vernon Hospital. The regime utilises early motion of the PIP joint while protecting the arthroplasty with a small static splint and digit strapping to reduce lateral forces on the joint.
The notes of fifteen patients were reviewed and their outcomes presented. To evaluate the outcomes in more detail the patients were divided into three groups according to their diagnostic reason for the procedure (rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and trauma). The overall mean arc of motion at the PIP joint on discharge from therapy was 54 improved from 28 pre operatively.
The patients with the osteoarthritic PIP joints gained the largest improvement in the PIP joint arc of motion and required the least rehabilitation intervention. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis required intense rehabilitation to gain less overall PIP joint motion but still reported satisfaction with their outcome. All 15 patients experienced an improvement in their pain level and subjectively reported increased function in their affected hand.
Following this retrospective review of cases the team continue to use this regime for metal and silastic prosthesis but now routinely provide additional written information pre operatively to assist patients’ understanding of the procedure and the extent of the rehabilitation required
Fabrication process of a high temperature polymer matrix engine duct
The process that was used in the molding of an advanced composite outer by-pass duct planned for the F404 engine is discussed. This duct was developed as a potential replacement for the existing titanium duct in order to reduce both the weight and cost of the duct. The composite duct is now going into the manufacturing technology portion of the program. The duct is fabricated using graphite cloth impregnated with the PMR-15 matrix system
The thalamic reticular nucleus: a functional hub for thalamocortical network dysfunction in schizophrenia and a target for drug discovery
The thalamus (comprising many distinct nuclei) plays a key role in facilitating sensory discrimination and cognitive processes through connections with the cortex. Impaired thalamocortical processing has long been considered to be involved in schizophrenia. In this review we focus on the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) providing evidence for it being an important communication hub between the thalamus and cortex and how it may play a key role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. We first highlight the functional neuroanatomy, neurotransmitter localisation and physiology of the TRN. We then present evidence of the physiological roles of the TRN in relation to oscillatory activity, cognition and behaviour. Next we discuss the role of the TRN in rodent models of risk factors for schizophrenia (genetic and pharmacological) and provide evidence for TRN deficits in schizophrenia. Finally we discuss new drug targets for schizophrenia in relation to restoring TRN circuitry dysfunction
Implications of the unusual structure in the pp correlation from Pb+Pb collisions at 158 AGeV
The recent NA49 measurement of two-proton correlation function shows an
interesting and unexpected structure at large relative momentum. Applying
source imaging techniques to the measurement, we find an unusually steep
drop-off in the two-proton source function. We show that the steep drop-off is
due to the structure in the correlation and the drop-off cannot be explained
using conventional correlation analysis. We suggest possible physics reasons

Fluctuation dynamo amplified by intermittent shear bursts in convectively driven magnetohydrodynamic turbulence
Intermittent large-scale high-shear flows are found to occur frequently and
spontaneously in direct numerical simulations of statistically stationary
turbulent Boussinesq magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) convection. The energetic
steady-state of the system is sustained by convective driving of the velocity
field and small-scale dynamo action. The intermittent emergence of flow
structures with strong velocity and magnetic shearing generates magnetic energy
at an elevated rate over time-scales longer than the characteristic time of the
large-scale convective motion. The resilience of magnetic energy amplification
suggests that intermittent shear-bursts are a significant driver of dynamo
action in turbulent magnetoconvection
Physical meaning of two-particle HBT measurements in case of correlated emission
It is shown that, in the presence of correlations in particle emission, the
measured HBT radii are related to the correlation range rather than to the size
of the interaction volume. Only in the case of weak correlations the standard
interpretation may be applicable, The earlier discussion [1] of short-range
correlations in configuration space is generalized to include also the
