Modelling of Diesel fuel properties through its surrogates using Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory
The Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory equation of state is utilised to model the effect of pressure and temperature on the density, volatility and viscosity of four Diesel surrogates; these calculated properties are then compared to the properties of several Diesel fuels. Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory calculations are performed using different sources for the pure component parameters. One source utilises literature values obtained from fitting vapour pressure and saturated liquid density data or from correlations based on these parameters. The second source utilises a group contribution method based on the chemical structure of each compound. Both modelling methods deliver similar estimations for surrogate density and volatility that are in close agreement with experimental results obtained at ambient pressure. Surrogate viscosity is calculated using the entropy scaling model with a new mixing rule for calculating mixture model parameters. The closest match of the surrogates to Diesel fuel properties provides mean deviations of 1.7% in density, 2.9% in volatility and 8.3% in viscosity. The Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory results are compared to calculations using the Peng–Robinson equation of state; the greater performance of the Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory approach for calculating fluid properties is demonstrated. Finally, an eight-component surrogate, with properties at high pressure and temperature predicted with the group contribution Perturbed-Chain, Statistical Associating Fluid Theory method, yields the best match for Diesel properties with a combined mean absolute deviation of 7.1% from experimental data found in the literature for conditions up to 373°K and 500 MPa. These results demonstrate the predictive capability of a state-of-the-art equation of state for Diesel fuels at extreme engine operating conditions
Emergent Nesting of the Fermi Surface from Local-Moment Description of Iron-Pnictide High-Tc Superconductors
We uncover the low-energy spectrum of a t-J model for electrons on a square
lattice of spin-1 iron atoms with 3dxz and 3dyz orbital character by applying
Schwinger-boson-slave-fermion mean-field theory and by exact diagonalization of
one hole roaming over a 4 x 4 x 2 lattice. Hopping matrix elements are set to
produce hole bands centered at zero two-dimensional (2D) momentum in the
free-electron limit. Holes can propagate coherently in the t-J model below a
threshold Hund coupling when long-range antiferromagnetic order across the d+ =
3d(x+iy)z and d- = 3d(x-iy)z orbitals is established by magnetic frustration
that is off-diagonal in the orbital indices. This leads to two hole-pocket
Fermi surfaces centered at zero 2D momentum. Proximity to a commensurate
spin-density wave (cSDW) that exists above the threshold Hund coupling results
in emergent Fermi surface pockets about cSDW momenta at a quantum critical
point (QCP). This motivates the introduction of a new Gutzwiller wavefunction
for a cSDW metal state. Study of the spin-fluctuation spectrum at cSDW momenta
indicates that the dispersion of the nested band of one-particle states that
emerges is electron-type. Increasing Hund coupling past the QCP can push the
hole-pocket Fermi surfaces centered at zero 2D momentum below the Fermi energy
level, in agreement with recent determinations of the electronic structure of
mono-layer iron-selenide superconductors.Comment: 41 pages, 12 figures, published versio
Simultaneous analysis of elastic scattering and transfer/breakup channels for the 6He+208Pb reaction at energies near the Coulomb barrier
The elastic and alpha-production channels for the 6He+208Pb reaction are
investigated at energies around the Coulomb barrier (E_{lab}=14, 16, 18, 22,
and 27 MeV). The effect of the two-neutron transfer channels on the elastic
scattering has been studied within the Coupled-Reaction-Channels (CRC) method.
We find that the explicit inclusion of these channels allows a simultaneous
description of the elastic data and the inclusive alpha cross sections at
backward angles. Three-body Continuum-Discretized Coupled-Channels (CDCC)
calculations are found to reproduce the elastic data, but not the
transfer/breakup data. The trivially-equivalent local polarization potential
(TELP) derived from the CRC and CDCC calculations are found to explain the
features found in previous phenomenological optical model calculations for this
system.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures (replaced with updated version
Overview of the Main Propulsion System for a Nuclear Thermal Propulsion Flight Demonstrator
A demonstration of a Nuclear Thermal Propulsion (NTP) engine has not been conducted in over 50 years. Several tests were conducted during the NERVA program but no NTP engine was ever flown in space. In the last several years there has been a considerable amount of conceptual design work on NTP engines conducted. With the prospect of human Mars missions in the 2030s there has been a renewed interest in NTP engines. A concept design study was conducted with the intent to design 2 flight demonstrator vehicles that would buy down programmatic and technical risks associated with launching and operating nuclear reactors in space. The intent of the first demonstrator mission would be to employ a simplified NTP engine and buy down programmatic risks whereas the second demonstrator would buy down technical risks with a NTP engine designed to be similar to an operational NTP model. The results of the study showed that a simplified NTP engine demonstrator could be feasibly built and flown in the near term with mostly high TRL, commercial off-the-shelf components
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless Transition in Spin-Charge Separated Superconductor
A model for spin-charge separated superconductivity in two dimensions is
introduced where the phases of the spinon and holon order parameters couple
gauge-invariantly to a statistical gauge-field representing chiral
spin-fluctuations. The model is analyzed in the continuum limit and in the
low-temperature limit. In both cases we find that physical electronic phase
correlations show a superconducting-normal phase transition of the
Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type, while statistical gauge-field excitations
are found to be strictly gapless. The normal-to-superconductor phase boundary
for this model is also obtained as a function of carrier density, where we find
that its shape compares favorably with that of the experimentally observed
phase diagram for the oxide superconductors.Comment: 35 pages, TeX, CSLA-P-93-
Discovery of X-ray pulsations from IGR J16320-4751 = AX J1631.9-4752
We report a discovery of strong modulations of the X-ray flux detected from
IGR J16320-4751 = AX J1631.9-4752 with a period of P~1300 sec. We reanalyzed
the data of an XMM-Newton ToO performed soon after the discovery of the source
by INTEGRAL and found the modulation at a period of P=1309+/-40 sec with a high
significance. Modulations of the source flux with two possible periods of ~1300
and ~1500 sec were identified in the ASCA archival data. It is very likely that
the modulation can be interpreted as X-ray pulsations, favouring a pulsar as
the compact object in IGR/AX J16320-4752. Thus for the moment this source
became the fourth source from a new class of highly absorbed binary systems for
which the pulsations are observed.Comment: accepted for the publication in A&A Letters, 4 pages, 4 figure
Cooper-pair coherence in a superfluid Fermi-gas of atoms
We study the coherence properties of a trapped two-component gas of fermionic
atoms below the BCS critical temperature. We propose an optical method to
investigate the Cooper-pair coherence across different regions of the
superfluid. Near-resonant laser light is used to induce transitions between the
two coupled hyperfine states. The beam is split so that it probes two spatially
separate regions of the gas. Absorption of the light in this interferometric
scheme depends on the Cooper-pair coherence between the two regions.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Submitted to J. Phys. B as a proceedings of the
