    H2-powered aviation at airports – Design and economics of LH2 refueling systems

    In this paper, the broader perspective of green hydrogen (H2) supply and refueling systems for aircraft is provided as an enabling technology brick for more climate friendly, H2-powered aviation. For this, two H2 demand scenarios at exemplary airports are determined for 2050. Then, general requirements for liquid hydrogen (LH2) refueling setups in an airport environment are derived and techno-economic models for LH2 storage, liquefaction and transportation to the aircraft are designed. Finally, a cost trade-off study is undertaken for the design of the LH2 setup including LH2 refueling trucks and a LH2 pipeline and hydrant system. It is found that for airports with less than 125 ktLH2 annual demand a LH2 refueling truck setup is the more economic choice. At airports with higher annual LH2 demands a LH2 pipeline & hydrant system can lead to slight cost reductions and enable safer and faster refueling. However, in all demand scenarios the refueling system costs only mark 3 to 4% of the total supply costs of LH2. The latter are dominated by the costs for green H2 produced offsite followed by the costs for liquefaction of H2 at an airport. While cost reducing scaling effects are likely to be achieved for H2 liquefaction plants, other component capacities would already be designed at maximum capacities for medium-sized airports. Furthermore, with annual LH2 demands of 100 ktLH2 and more, medium and larger airports could take a special H2 hub role by 2050 dominating regional H2 consumption. Finally, technology demonstrators are required to reduce uncertainty around major techno-economic parameters such as the investment costs for LH2 pipeline & hydrant systems. © 2022 The Author

    Search for hidden-photon dark matter with the FUNK experiment

    Many extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics predict a parallel sector of a new U(1) symmetry, giving rise to hidden photons. These hidden photons are candidate particles for cold dark matter. They are expected to kinetically mix with regular photons, which leads to a tiny oscillating electric-field component accompanying dark matter particles. A conducting surface can convert such dark matter particles into photons which are emitted almost perpendicularly to the surface. The corresponding photon frequency follows from the mass of the hidden photons. In this contribution we present a preliminary result on a hidden photon search in the visible and near-UV wavelength range that was done with a large, 14 m2 spherical metallic mirror and discuss future dark matter searches in the eV and sub-eV range by application of different detectors for electromagnetic radiation.Comment: Contribution to the 35th International Cosmic Ray Conference ICRC2017, 10 to 20 July, 2017, Bexco, Busan, Korea. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1711.0296

    Sigmodontinae rodents as hosts for larvae and nymphs of Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 (Acari: Ixodidae)

    Larvae and nymphs of Ixodes loricatus Neumann, 1899 ticks (confirmed by morphological characters and by comparison of 16S mitochondrial rDNA sequences) were collected from Sigmodontinae Wagner, rodents in central and northern Argentina and Uruguay. A total of 100 larvae and 38 nymphs of I. loricatus were collected on the genera Akodon Meyen (n = 36 individuals), Calomys Waterhouse (n = 2), Oligoryzomys Bang (n = 12), Oxymycterus Waterhouse (n = 9), and Scapteromys Waterhouse (n = 13). 72 larvae and 18 nymphs were collected on Akodon. Adults of I. loricatus were found in central Argentina and Uruguay on Didelphimorphia of the genera Didelphis Linnaeus and Lutreolina Thomas. Ixodes loricatus has been considered a species with strict total specificity to Didelphimorphia. Our results show that this statement may not be justified. Sigmodontinae rodents are sympatric and share habitats with the phylogenetically distant Didelphimorphia; infestation with I. loricatus seems to be its consequence.     Evidence for thermal-stress-induced rockfalls on Mars impact crater slopes

    Here we study rocks falling from exposed outcrops of bedrock, which have left tracks on the slope over which they have bounced and/or rolled, in fresh impact craters (1–10 km in diameter) on Mars. The presence of these tracks shows that these rocks have fallen relatively recently because aeolian processes are known to infill topographic lows over time. Mapping of rockfall tracks indicate trends in frequency with orientation, which in turn depend on the latitudinal position of the crater. Craters in the equatorial belt (between 15°N and 15°S) exhibit higher frequencies of rockfall on their N-S oriented slopes compared to their E-W ones. Craters >15° N/S have notably higher frequencies on their equator-facing slopes as opposed to the other orientations. We computed solar radiation on the surface of crater slopes to compare insolation patterns and rockfall spatial distribution, and find statistically significant correlations between maximum diurnal insolation and rockfall frequency. Our results indicate that solar-induced thermal stress plays a more important role under relatively recent climate conditions in rock breakdown and preconditioning slopes for rockfalls than phase transitions of H2O or CO2, at mid and equatorial latitudes. Thermal stress should thus be considered as an important factor in promoting mass-wasting process on impact crater walls and other steep slopes on Mars
