Amor y Apoyo: Lecciones de Latinx Families in Nourishing Resilience to First and Second-Generation College Students
The present qualitative study aims to understand how Latino/Hispanic herea er referred to as Latinx, parent involvement is different or similar among first- and second-generation college students in how they experience higher education and how parental education impacts the use of student support services. Hence, supporting Latinx student retention by developing university and parental relationships. Second-generation college students and Latinx parents were unable to be included in the study because of their scarcity or hesitation of participating. Therefore, participants included a convenience sample of six first-generation undergraduate students from a 4-year institution. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to obtain their stories of parental involvement and student involvement. Results suggest that (1) first-generation college students experience a hands-off involvement from parents, however, they enjoyed the freedom this brought, (2) Latinx parents might have a misunderstanding of college student identity, and (3) students expressed a desire to have their parents learn about and understand mental health. Implications of findings include universities creating more resources to support Latinx students’ mental health, as well as earlier school outreach for Latinx parent involvement to better inform them about the college lifestyle
Using Factorial Design Methodology to Assess PLA-g-Ma and Henequen Microfibrillated Cellulose Content on the Mechanical Properties of Poly(lactic acid) Composites
In this work, a 22 factorial design was used to study the effect of microfibrillated henequen cellulose fibers (HENCEL) and PLA-g-MA coupling agent contents on the tensile, flexural, and impact mechanical properties and the heat deflection temperature (HDT) of biodegradable PLA composites. The results show that the principal effects of HENCEL and MA are statistically significant for the tensile, flexural, HDT, and impact strength properties of PLA composites. Regarding the interactions between the principle effects, MA-HENCEL, there are differences with respect to the mechanical property; for example, for tensile and flexural mechanical properties, there is a synergistic effect between MA and HENCEL, whereas for HDT and impact strength there is not any. The micromechanical analysis shows an excellent agreement between the measured and the estimated values for both the composite tensile strength and the elastic modulus and only slight deviations were noticed for high microfibrillated cellulose fibers content. The morphological analysis via SEM indicated that the addition of PLA-g-MA improved the fiber-matrix adhesion because of the HENCEL unbounding and pull-out decreases from the PLA matrix. The use of appropriate values of matrix strength and stiffness and considering the improved fiber-matrix adhesion of the coupling agent yield a good agreement between experimental and estimated values
A general relativistic mass-to-distance ratio for a set of megamaser AGN black holes
In this work we perform a Bayesian statistical fit to estimate the
mass-to-distance ratio and the recessional redshift of 10 different black holes
hosted at the centre of active galactic nuclei, namely the galaxies NGC 5765b,
NGC 6323, UGC 3789, CGCG 074-064, ESO 558-G009, NGC 2960, NGC 6264, NGC 4388,
J0437+2456 and NGC 2273. Our general relativistic method makes use of the
positions in the sky and frequency shift observations of water megamasers
circularly orbiting the central black hole on their accretion disks. This
approach also allows us to quantify the gravitational redshift which is not
considered in a Newtonian analysis. The gravitational redshift of the
megamasers closest to the black hole is found to be within the range 1-6 km/s.
The order of the fitted black hole masses corresponds to supermassive black
holes and lies on the range M_{sun}Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, 3 table
Revan-degree indices on random graphs
Given a simple connected non-directed graph , we consider two
families of graph invariants:
(which has gained interest recently) and (that we introduce in this work); where denotes the edge of
connecting the vertices and , is the Revan degree of the
vertex , and is a function of the Revan vertex degrees. Here, with and the maximum and minimum
degrees among the vertices of and is the degree of the vertex .
Particularly, we apply both and R on two models of
random graphs: Erd\"os-R\'enyi graphs and random geometric graphs. By a
thorough computational study we show that \left and
\left, normalized to the order of the graph, scale
with the average Revan degree \left; here \left
denotes the average over an ensemble of random graphs. Moreover, we provide
analytical expressions for several graph invariants of both families in the
dense graph limit.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figure
