A MERLIN Observation of PSR B1951+32 and its associated Plerion
In an investigative 16 hour L band observation using the MERLIN radio
interferometric array, we have resolved both the pulsar PSR B1951+32 and
structure within the flat spectral radio continuum region, believed to be the
synchrotron nebula associated with the interaction of the pulsar and its `host'
supernova remnant CTB 80. The extended structure we see, significant at
4.5 , is of dimensions 2.5" 0.75", and suggests a sharp bow
shaped arc of shocked emission, which is correlated with similar structure
observed in lower resolution radio maps and X-ray images. Using this MERLIN
data as a new astrometric reference for other multiwavelength data we can place
the pulsar at one edge of the HST reported optical synchrotron knot, ruling out
previous suggested optical counterparts, and allowing an elementary analysis of
the optical synchrotron emission which appears to trail the pulsar. The latter
is possibly a consequence of pulsar wind replenishment, and we suggest that the
knot is a result of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) instabilities. These being so, it
suggests a dynamical nature to the optical knot, which will require high

Large-Scale CO Maps of the Lupus Molecular Cloud Complex
Fully sampled degree-scale maps of the 13CO 2-1 and CO 4-3 transitions toward
three members of the Lupus Molecular Cloud Complex - Lupus I, III, and IV -
trace the column density and temperature of the molecular gas. Comparison with
IR extinction maps from the c2d project requires most of the gas to have a
temperature of 8-10 K. Estimates of the cloud mass from 13CO emission are
roughly consistent with most previous estimates, while the line widths are
higher, around 2 km/s. CO 4-3 emission is found throughout Lupus I, indicating
widespread dense gas, and toward Lupus III and IV. Enhanced line widths at the
NW end and along the edge of the B228 ridge in Lupus I, and a coherent velocity
gradient across the ridge, are consistent with interaction between the
molecular cloud and an expanding HI shell from the Upper-Scorpius subgroup of
the Sco-Cen OB Association. Lupus III is dominated by the effects of two HAe/Be
stars, and shows no sign of external influence. Slightly warmer gas around the
core of Lupus IV and a low line width suggest heating by the
Upper-Centaurus-Lupus subgroup of Sco-Cen, without the effects of an HI shell.Comment: 54 pages, 27 figures, 5 tables. To appear in ApJS. Preprint also

Periodic Bursts of Coherent Radio Emission from an Ultracool Dwarf
We report the detection of periodic (p = 1.96 hours) bursts of extremely
bright, 100% circularly polarized, coherent radio emission from the M9 dwarf
TVLM 513-46546. Simultaneous photometric monitoring observations have
established this periodicity to be the rotation period of the dwarf. These
bursts, which were not present in previous observations of this target, confirm
that ultracool dwarfs can generate persistent levels of broadband, coherent
radio emission, associated with the presence of kG magnetic fields in a
large-scale, stable configuration. Compact sources located at the magnetic
polar regions produce highly beamed emission generated by the electron
cyclotron maser instability, the same mechanism known to generate planetary
coherent radio emission in our solar system. The narrow beams of radiation pass
our line of sight as the dwarf rotates, producing the associated periodic
bursts. The resulting radio light curves are analogous to the periodic light
curves associated with pulsar radio emission highlighting TVLM 513-46546 as the

Workers respond to unequal likelihood of future reproductive opportunities in an ant
In cooperatively-breeding or eusocial societies, opportunities may arise for helper individuals to gain direct fitness by reproducing. However, the extent to which helpers respond differentially, in terms of their reproductive behaviour, to the probability that reproductive opportunities will arise is not fully known. In many eusocial Hymenoptera, workers lay eggs only in queenless conditions following the death of the queen or queens. Relative to polygyny (multiple queens per colony), monogyny (single queen per colony) increases the probability that queenless conditions arise. We therefore tested the hypothesis that ant workers respond differentially to queenless conditions as a function of the probability of queenlessness. We compared worker behaviour and reproduction before and after removal of queens from monogynous and polygynous colonies of the ant Leptothorax acervorum. We found that, in queenless conditions, workers from monogynous colonies were significantly more likely to lay eggs, showed a significantly reduced latency to egg-laying, and laid eggs at a significantly higher rate per capita, than workers from polygynous colonies. In addition, before queen removal, workers that laid eggs in queenless conditions across both monogynous and polygynous colonies performed a range of behaviours associated with reproduction at significantly higher rates compared to non-reproductive, control workers. These 'future reproductive' workers also significantly reduced their rates of brood care following queen removal. These findings show that workers under monogyny reproduce more readily in queenless conditions than workers under polygyny, and that would-be reproductive workers alter their behaviour before they experience the opportunity for future reproduction. They therefore suggest that workers adaptively modulate their reproductive behaviour as a function of the likelihood of opportunities for direct reproduction arising, and that workers' behaviour is affected by the ability to gain direct fitness even when reproduction is currently not occurring
The Detection and Characterization of cm Radio Continuum Emission from the Low-mass Protostar L1014-IRS
Observations by the Cores to Disk Legacy Team with the Spitzer Space
Telescope have identified a low luminosity, mid-infrared source within the
dense core, Lynds 1014, which was previously thought to harbor no internal
source. Followup near-infrared and submillimeter interferometric observations
have confirmed the protostellar nature of this source by detecting scattered
light from an outflow cavity and a weak molecular outflow. In this paper, we
report the detection of cm continuum emission with the VLA. The emission is
characterized by a quiescent, unresolved 90 uJy 6 cm source within 0.2" of the
Spitzer source. The spectral index of the quiescent component is between 6 cm and 3.6 cm. A factor of two increase in 6 cm
emission was detected during one epoch and circular polarization was marginally
detected at the level with Stokes {V/I} % . We have
searched for 22 GHz H2O maser emission toward L1014-IRS, but no masers were
detected during 7 epochs of observations between June 2004 and December 2006.
L1014-IRS appears to be a low-mass, accreting protostar which exhibits cm
emission from a thermal jet or a wind, with a variable non-thermal emission
component. The quiescent cm radio emission is noticeably above the correlation
of 3.6 cm and 6 cm luminosity versus bolometric luminosity, indicating more
radio emission than expected. We characterize the cm continuum emission in
terms of observations of other low-mass protostars, including updated
correlations of centimeter continuum emission with bolometric luminosity and
outflow force, and discuss the implications of recent larger distance estimates
on the physical attributes of the protostar and dense molecular core.Comment: 14 pages. Accepted for publication in Ap
Influence of hand position on the near-effect in 3D attention
Voluntary reorienting of attention in real depth situations is characterized by an attentional bias to locations near the viewer once attention is deployed to a spatially cued object in depth. Previously this effect (initially referred to as the ‘near-effect’) was attributed to access of a 3D viewer-centred spatial representation for guiding attention in 3D space. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the near-bias could have been associated with the position of the response-hand, always near the viewer in previous studies investigating endogenous attentional shifts in real depth. In Experiment 1, the response-hand was placed at either the near or far target depth in a depth cueing task. Placing the response-hand at the far target depth abolished the near-effect, but failed to bias spatial attention to the far location. Experiment 2 showed that the response-hand effect was not modulated by the presence of an additional passive hand, whereas Experiment 3 confirmed that attentional prioritization of the passive hand was not masked by the influence of the responding hand on spatial attention in Experiment 2. The pattern of results is most consistent with the idea that response preparation can modulate spatial attention within a 3D viewer-centred spatial representation
Extended haplodiploidy hypothesis
Evolution of altruistic behavior was a hurdle for the logic of Darwinian evolution. Soon after Hamilton formalized the concept of inclusive fitness, which explains how altruism can evolve, he suggested that the high sororal relatedness brought by haplodiploidy could be why Hymenopterans have a high prevalence in eusocial species, and why helpers in Hymenoptera are always female. Later it was noted that in order to capitalize on the high sororal relatedness, helpers would need to direct help toward sisters, and this would bias the population sex ratio. Under a 1:3 males:females sex ratio, the inclusive fitness valuation a female places on her sister, brother, and an own offspring are equalapparently removing the benefit of helping over independent reproduction. Based on this argumentation, haplodiploidy hypothesis has been considered a red herring. However, here we show that when population sex ratio, cost of altruism, and population growth rate are considered together, haplodiploidy does promote female helping even with female-biased sex ratio, due the lowered cost of altruism in such populations. Our analysis highlights the need to re-evaluate the role of haplodiploidy in the evolution of helping, and the importance of fully exploring the model assumptions when comparing interactions of population sex ratios and social behaviors.Peer reviewe
Rotational Modulation of M/L Dwarfs due to Magnetic Spots
We find periodic I-band variability in two ultracool dwarfs, TVLM 513-46546 and 2MASS J00361617+1821104, on either side of the M/L dwarf boundary. Both of these targets are short-period radio transients, with the detected I-band periods matching those found at radio wavelengths (P = 1.96 hr for TVLM 513-46546 and P = 3 hr for 2MASS J00361617+1821104). We attribute the detected I-band periodicities to the periods of rotation of the dwarfs, supported by radius estimates and measured v sin i values for the objects. Based on the detected period of rotation of TVLM 513-46546 (M9) in the I band, along with confirmation of strong magnetic fields from recent radio observations, we argue for magnetically induced spots as the cause of this periodic variability. The I-band rotational modulation of the L3.5 dwarf 2MASS J00361617+1821104 appeared to vary in amplitude with time. We conclude that the most likely cause of the I-band variability for this object is magnetic spots, possibly coupled with time-evolving features such as dust clouds
Face Centered Anisotropic Surface Impedance Boundary Conditions in FDTD : Improved performance of staircased mesh for shielding problems
We present a new face centered approach to the collocation of the fields for the application of a surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC). This approach deals with the ambiguities in the surface normal that arise at the edges on stair-cased surfaces.. The accuracy of the new scheme is compared to edge based and conformal approaches using both planar sheet and spherical shell test cases. Stair-casing effects are evaluated and the face-centered scheme exhibits significantly less error than the edge based approach
