Some steady and oscillating airfoil test results, including the effects of sweep, from the tunnel spanning wing
A large scale tunnel spanning wing was built and tested. The model can be operated as either a swept or unswept wing and can be tested in steady state or oscillated sinusoidally in pitch about its quarter chord. Data is taken at mid-span with an internal 6-component balance and is also obtained from miniature pressure transducers distributed near the center span region. A description is given of the system and a brief discussion of some of the steady and unsteady results obtained to date. These are the steady load behavior to Mach numbers of approximately 1.1 and unsteady loads, including drag, at a reduced frequency of approximately 0.1
Scoping studies: towards a methodological framework
This paper focuses on scoping studies, an approach to reviewing the literature which to date has received little attention in the research methods literature. We distinguish between different types of scoping studies and indicate where these stand in relation to full systematic reviews. We outline a framework for conducting a scoping study based on our recent experiences of reviewing the literature on services for carers for people with mental health problems. Where appropriate, our approach to scoping the field is contrasted with the procedures followed in systematic reviews. We emphasize how including a consultation exercise in this sort of study may enhance the results, making them more useful to policy makers, practitioners and service users. Finally, we consider the advantages and limitations of the approach and suggest that a wider debate is called for about the role of the scoping study in relation to other types of literature reviews
Reproductive Failure in UK Harbour Porpoises Phocoena phocoena : Legacy of Pollutant Exposure?

Low-Temperature Thermochronology of the Chatkal-Kurama Terrane (Uzbekistan-Tajikistan): Insights Into the Meso-Cenozoic Thermal History of the Western Tian Shan
The Chatkal-Kurama terrane represents a key region in understanding the tectonic evolution of the western Tian Shan. In this contribution, we present new thermochronological data (zircon [U-Th-Sm]/He, apatite fission track, and apatite [U-Th-Sm]/He) and the associated thermal history models for 30 igneous samples from the Chatkal-Kurama terrane within Uzbekistan and Tajikistan (west of the Talas-Fergana Fault) and integrate our data with published data from the central Tian Shan (east of the Talas-Fergana Fault). The Chatkal-Kurama terrane experienced a phase of rapid cooling during the Triassic-Jurassic at ca. 225–190 Ma, which we interpret as a far-field response to the closure of the Palaeo-Asian Ocean or the accretion of the Qiangtang terrane on to the Eurasian margin. In the Late Jurassic to the Early Cretaceous, the Chatkal-Kurama terrane experienced a period of tectonic stability and denudation, before transitioning into a period of marine incursions of the Paratethys Sea. In contrast, fast cooling is recorded for the Kyrgyz central Tian Shan to the east of the Talas-Fergana Fault. The differing thermal histories at either side of the Talas-Fergana Fault suggest that the fault induced a topographic divide during the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, with high relief in the east (Kyrgyz Tian Shan) and low relief to the west (Uzbek-Tajik Tian Shan). Finally, the Chatkal-Kurama terrane experienced renewed tectonic activity since ca. 30 Ma, related with the distant India-Eurasia collision and Pamir indentation. The Cenozoic reactivation induced crustal tilting of the Chatkal-Kurama terrane, progressively exposing deeper rocks to the southwest
Patient experiences of receiving arthroscopic surgery or personalised hip therapy for femoroacetabular impingement in the context of the UK fashion study:a qualitative study
UK FASHIoN was a multicentre randomised controlled trial comparing hip arthroscopic surgery (HA) with personalised hip therapy (PHT, physiotherapist-led conservative care), for patients with hip pain attributed to femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome. Our aim was to describe the treatment and trial participation experiences of patients, to contextualise the trial results and offer further information to assist treatment decision-making in FAI. We conducted in-depth semi-structured telephone interviews with a purposive sample of trial participants from each of the trial arms. They were interviewed after they received treatment and completed their first year of trial participation. Thematic analysis and constant comparison analytical approaches were used to identify themes of patient treatment experiences during the trial. Forty trial participants were interviewed in this qualitative study. Their baseline characteristics were similar to those in the main trial sample. On average, their hip-related quality of life (iHOT-33 scores) at 12 months follow-up were lower than average for all trial participants, indicating poorer hip-related quality of life as a consequence of theoretical sampling. Patient experiences occurred in five patient groups: those who felt their symptoms improved with hip arthroscopy, or with personal hip therapy, patients who felt their hip symptoms did not change with PHT but did not want HA, patients who decided to change from PHT to HA and a group who experienced serious complications after HA. Interviewees mostly described a trouble-free, enriching and altruistic trial participation experience, although most participants expected more clinical follow-up at the end of the trial. Both HA and PHT were experienced as beneficial by participants in the trial. Treatment success appeared to depend partly on patients' prior own expectations as well as their outcomes, and future research is needed to explore this further. Findings from this study can be combined with the primary results to inform future FAI patients
Identification of Novel Cetacean Poxviruses in Cetaceans Stranded in South West England
Poxvirus infections in marine mammals have been mainly reported through their clinical lesions
and electron microscopy (EM). Poxvirus particles in association with such lesions
have been demonstrated by EM and were previously classified as two new viruses, cetacean
poxvirus 1 (CePV-1) and cetacean poxvirus 2 (CePV-2). In this study, epidermal pox
lesions in cetaceans stranded in South West England (Cornwall) between 2008 and 2012
were investigated by electron microscopy and molecular analysis. PCR and sequencing of
a highly conserved region within the viral DNA polymerase gene ruled out both parapoxand
orthopoxviruses. Moreover, phylogenetic analysis of the PCR product clustered the sequences
with those previously described as cetacean poxviruses. However, taking the
close genetic distance of this gene fragment across the family of poxviridae into account, it
is reasonable to postulate further, novel cetacean poxvirus species. The nucleotide similarity
within each cluster (tentative species) detected ranged from 98.6% to 100%, whilst the
similarity between the clusters was no more than 95%. The detection of several species of
poxvirus in different cetacean species confirms the likelihood of a heterogeneous cetacean
poxvirus genus, comparable to the heterogeneity observed in other poxvirus genera
Drivers of taxonomic bias in conservation research : a global analysis of terrestrial mammals
Scientific knowledge of species and the ecosystems they inhabit is the cornerstone of modern conservation. However, research effort is not spread evenly among taxa (taxonomic bias), which may constrain capacity to identify conservation risk and to implement effective responses. Addressing such biases requires an understanding of factors that promote or constrain the use of a particular species in research projects. To this end, we quantified conservation science knowledge of the world's extant non-marine mammal species (n = 4108) based on the number of published documents in journals indexed on Clarivate Analytics' Web of Science (TM). We use an innovative hurdle model approach to assess the relative importance of several ecological, biogeographical and cultural factors for explaining variation in research production between species. The most important variable explaining the presence/absence of conservation research was scientific capacity of countries within the range of the species, followed by body mass and years since the taxonomic description. Research volume (more than one document) was strongly associated with number of years since the data describing on that species, followed by scientific capacity within the range of species, high body mass and invasiveness. The threat status was weakly associated to explain the presence/absence and research volume in conservation research. These results can be interpreted as a consequence of the dynamic interplay between the perceived need for conservation research about a species and its appropriateness as a target of research. As anticipated, the scientific capacity of the countries where a species is found is a strong driver of conservation research bias, reflecting the high variation in conservation research funding and human resources between countries. Our study suggests that this bias could be most effectively reduced by a combination of investing in pioneering research, targeted funding and supporting research in countries with low scientific capacity and high biodiversity.Peer reviewe
Molecular characterization of poxviruses associated with tattoo skin lesions in UK cetaceans.
There is increasing concern for the well-being of cetacean populations around the UK. Tattoo skin disease (characterised by irregular, grey, black or yellowish, stippled cutaneous lesions) caused by poxvirus infection is a potential health indicatora potential health indicator for cetaceans. Limited sequence data indicates that cetacean poxviruses (CPVs) belong to an unassigned genus of the Chordopoxvirinae. To obtain further insight into the phylogenetic relationships between CPV and other Chordopoxvirinae members we partially characterized viral DNA originating from tattoo lesions collected in Delphinidae and Phocoenidae stranded along the UK coastline in 1998-2008. We also evaluated the presence of CPV in skin lesions other than tattoos to examine specificity and sensitivity of visual diagnosis. After DNA extraction, regions of the DNA polymerase and DNA topoisomerase I genes were amplified by PCR, sequenced and compared with other isolates. The presence of CPV DNA was demonstrated in tattoos from one striped dolphin (Stenella coeruleoalba), eight harbour porpoises (Phocoena phocoena) and one short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) and in one 'dubious tattoo' lesion detected in one other porpoise. Seventeen of the 18 PCR positive skin lesions had been visually identified as tattoos and one as a dubious tattoo. None of the other skin lesions were PCR positive. Thus, visual identification had a 94.4% sensitivity and 100% specificity. The DNA polymerase PCR was most effective in detecting CPV DNA. Limited sequence phylogeny grouped the UK samples within the odontocete poxviruses (CPV group 1) and indicated that two different poxvirus lineages infect the Phocoenidae and the Delphinidae. The phylogenetic tree had three major branches: one with the UK Phocoenidae viruses, one with the Delphinidae isolates and one for the mysticete poxvirus (CPV group 2). This implies a radiation of poxviruses according to the host suborder and the families within these suborders
Testing message framing to increase physical activity among British South Asians
Objective: British South Asians (BSAs) experience a higher incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) which is not declining in line with the UK national average. Low physical activity levels are likely to contribute to this elevated risk. This study investigated the effectiveness of message framing, cultural sensitivity and their interaction on promoting physical activity among BSAs. Design: One hundred and seventy-nine participants (70 males and 109 females) were randomly allocated to watch one of four films in a 2 (loss vs. gain) × 2 (culturally sensitive vs. non-culturally sensitive) design. Main outcome measures: Measures of self-reported physical activity and behavioural intention were completed at baseline and two-month follow-up. Results: The analysis revealed no main effects for message framing, cultural sensitivity or for the interaction between these factors for self-reported physical activity and behavioural intention. Conclusions: Healthy BSAs appear not to respond to health promotion messages which have been manipulated by message framing or cultural sensitivity. Possible explanations are that despite an increased risk of developing CHD, healthy BSAs may be unwilling to engage in immediate action for a potential future health problem and cultural sensitivity may be irrelevant to a ‘Westernised’ sample. Nevertheless, future research ought to investigate variations of the current intervention by using a larger sample size, targeting a more sedentary population, varying the length and exposure to the intervention in less assimilated groups, clinically symptomatic populations or those at high risk of CHD
