Strangeness Enhancement Scenarios: Fireball or Independent Strings?
Due to the long-standing discrepancy between NA35 and NA36 data on
production, two drastically different scenarios of strangeness enhancement are
still possible. Independent string models, such as the dual parton model, lead
to results close to the NA36 data. On the contrary, the NA35 results can only
be described by introducing full final state rescattering of the produced
particles. The corresponding predictions for central - collisions at
CERN energies differ by a factor 3 to 4. Preliminary data on the net proton
(-) rapidity distribution in - collisions favor the
independent string scenario.Comment: 12 pages, Plain Tex, no figure
Search for the QCD critical point in nuclear collisions at the CERN SPS
Pion production in nuclear collisions at the SPS is investigated with the aim
to search, in a restricted domain of the phase diagram, for power-laws in the
behavior of correlations which are compatible with critical QCD. We have
analyzed interactions of nuclei of different size (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at
158 GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a
search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is
performed for pairs with invariant mass very close to the two-pion
threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma
component in a hadronic medium, even if the -meson has no well defined
vacuum state. It turns out that for the Pb+Pb system the proposed analysis
technique cannot be applied without entering the invariant mass region with
strong Coulomb correlations. As a result the treatment becomes inconclusive in
this case. Our results for the other systems indicate the presence of power-law
fluctuations in the freeze-out state of Si+Si approaching in size the
prediction of critical QCD.Comment: 31 pages, 11 figure

Dynamic ham-sandwich cuts in the plane
We design efficient data structures for dynamically maintaining a ham-sandwich cut of two point sets in the plane subject to insertions and deletions of points in either set. A ham-sandwich cut is a line that simultaneously bisects the cardinality of both point sets. For general point sets, our first data structure supports each operation in O(n1/3+ε) amortized time and O(n4/3+ε) space. Our second data structure performs faster when each point set decomposes into a small number k of subsets in convex position: it supports insertions and deletions in O(logn) time and ham-sandwich queries in O(klog4n) time. In addition, if each point set has convex peeling depth k , then we can maintain the decomposition automatically using O(klogn) time per insertion and deletion. Alternatively, we can view each convex point set as a convex polygon, and we show how to find a ham-sandwich cut that bisects the total areas or total perimeters of these polygons in O(klog4n) time plus the O((kb)polylog(kb)) time required to approximate the root of a polynomial of degree O(k) up to b bits of precision. We also show how to maintain a partition of the plane by two lines into four regions each containing a quarter of the total point count, area, or perimeter in polylogarithmic time.Engineering and Applied Science
Phase-space dependence of particle-ratio fluctuations in Pb+Pb collisions from 20A to 158A GeV beam energy
A novel approach, the identity method, was used for particle identification
and the study of fluctuations of particle yield ratios in Pb+Pb collisions at
the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). This procedure allows to unfold the
moments of the unknown multiplicity distributions of protons (p), kaons (K),
pions () and electrons (e). Using these moments the excitation function of
the fluctuation measure [A,B] was measured, with A and
B denoting different particle types. The obtained energy dependence of
agrees with previously published NA49 results on the related
measure . Moreover, was found to depend
on the phase space coverage for [K,p] and [K,] pairs. This feature most
likely explains the reported differences between measurements of NA49 and those
of STAR in central Au+Au collisions
Measurement of event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations using strongly intensive measures and in nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron
Results from the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS are presented on
event-by-event transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations of charged
particles, produced at forward rapidities in central Pb+Pb interactions at beam
momenta 20, 30, 40, 80, and 158 GeV/c, as well as in systems of
different size (, C+C, Si+Si, and Pb+Pb) at 158 GeV/c. This publication
extends the previous NA49 measurements of the strongly intensive measure
by a study of the recently proposed strongly intensive measures of
fluctuations and . In the explored kinematic
region transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations show no significant
energy dependence in the SPS energy range. However, a remarkable system size
dependence is observed for both and , with the
largest values measured in peripheral Pb+Pb interactions. The results are
compared with NA61/SHINE measurements in collisions, as well as with
predictions of the UrQMD and EPOS models.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to PR
Production of deuterium, tritium, and He in central Pb+Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A, and 158A GeV at the CERN SPS
Production of , , and He nuclei in central Pb+Pb interactions was
studied at five collision energies ( 6.3, 7.6, 8.8, 12.3, and
17.3 GeV) with the NA49 detector at the CERN SPS. Transverse momentum spectra,
rapidity distributions, and particle ratios were measured. Yields are compared
to predictions of statistical models. Phase-space distributions of light nuclei
are discussed and compared to those of protons in the context of a coalescence
approach. The coalescence parameters and , as well as coalescence
radii for and He were determined as a function of transverse mass at
all energies.Comment: 22 pages, 29 figures, 8 tables, for submission to Phys. Rev.
Measurements of , K, p and spectra in proton-proton interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS
Measurements of inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of ,
K, p and produced in inelastic p+p interactions at
incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c ( 6.3,
7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively) were performed at the CERN Super
Proton Synchrotron using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer.
Spectra are presented as function of rapidity and transverse momentum and are
compared to predictions of current models. The measurements serve as the
baseline in the NA61/SHINE study of the properties of the onset of
deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter
Multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations in inelastic proton-proton interactions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron
Measurements of multiplicity and transverse momentum fluctuations of charged
particles were performed in inelastic p+p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80 and
158 GeV/c beam momentum. Results for the scaled variance of the multiplicity
distribution and for three strongly intensive measures of multiplicity and
transverse momentum fluctuations \$\Delta[P_{T},N]\$, \$\Sigma[P_{T},N]\$ and
\$\Phi_{p_T}\$ are presented. For the first time the results on fluctuations
are fully corrected for experimental biases. The results on multiplicity and
transverse momentum fluctuations significantly deviate from expectations for
the independent particle production. They also depend on charges of selected
hadrons. The string-resonance Monte Carlo models EPOS and UrQMD do not describe
the data. The scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is significantly
higher in inelastic p+p interactions than in central Pb+Pb collisions measured
by NA49 at the same energy per nucleon. This is in qualitative disagreement
with the predictions of the Wounded Nucleon Model. Within the statistical
framework the enhanced multiplicity fluctuations in inelastic p+p interactions
can be interpreted as due to event-by-event fluctuations of the fireball energy
and/or volume.Comment: 18 pages, 12 figure
High-grade undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma in the gluteus with a v-y flap: a case report
Objective: Undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma (UPS) is rare and affects mainly the elderly. Due to the low incidence and heterogeneous variety of this sarcoma, little is known about the UPS regarding clinical behavior, treatment strategies and prognosis. The objective is to describe the case of a young patient, with a UPS measuring 14 × 11.2 × 8.2 cm, with a 6-month evolution and no metastases.
Case Report: A female patient, 34 years old, reported the presence of nodulation in the left gluteal region for 6 months with progressive growth associated with pain, weight loss of 10 kg in the last 2 months. An anatomopathological study showed a malignant neoplasm of spindle cells and high-grade pleomorphic sarcoma on immunohistochemistry. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy and complete resection of the lesion with subsequent adjuvant radiotherapy were performed.
Results: Since undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma has a better prognosis when diagnosed early and in a small size, it is crucial to immediately recognize and assess any enlarged mass and nodule, even though it is a rare diagnosis.
Conclusions: Due to the high rate of recurrence and metastasis, monitoring should be carried out regularly for years after surgical excision
