This paper deals with field investigations on the biology of "saúva parda" (brown parasol ant, Atta capiguara Gonçalves, 1944), performed at Piracicaba and several other counties (State of São Paulo, Brazil). This ant is very noxious to several grasses and seems to make its colony only in very poor soils. Formerly the insect was known only in three counties; the writers found it in other fourteen ones

In this paper, some notes on "saúva mata pasto" (paraol ant, Atta bisphaerica Forel, 1908) are presented. This ant is very common in good soils and it is a pest of gramineous plants, mainly com, rice, sugar cane, and so son. In poor land it is too difficult or even impossible to ind it

In 1961, field investigations on "saúva de vidro" (parasol ant, Atta laevigata (Fred. Smith, 1858) were carried out at Piracicaba and other regions of the State of São Paulo (Brazil). This species was found to be a serious pest of cultivated plants, specially Eucalyptus and cotton. The ant makes its colony in any kind of soil, but it prefers to live in the poor ones

Main and moderated effects of multimorbidity and depressive symptoms on cognition

Objective: Multimorbidity, or the occurrence of two or more chronic conditions, is a global challenge, with implications for mortality, morbidity, disability, and life quality. Psychiatric disorders are common among the chronic diseases that affect patients with multimorbidity. It is still not well understood whether psychiatric symptoms, especially depressive symptoms, moderate the effect of multimorbidity on cognition. Methods: We used a large (n=2,681) dataset to assess whether depressive symptomatology moderates the effect of multimorbidity on cognition using structural equation modelling. Results: It was found that the more depressive symptoms and chronic conditions, the worse the cognitive performance, and the higher the educational level, the better the cognitive performance. We found a significant but weak (0.009; p = 0.04) moderating effect. Conclusion: We have provided the first estimate of the moderating effect of depression on the relation between multimorbidity and cognition, which was small. Although this moderation has been implied by many previous studies, it was never previously estimated

Electroanalysis of Imidacloprid Insecticide in River Waters Using Functionalized Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode

In this work, a functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE/MWCNT-f) was optimized for the direct determination of imidacloprid (IMC) insecticide in river water. The functionalized material was characterized by infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and the modified electrode by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). Results revealed that the GCE/MWCNT-f effectively increased the response toward IMC reduction by enhancing the reduction peak current and decreasing the peak potential in comparison with the bare electrode. After optimizing the electroanalytical conditions, the GCE/MWCNT-f showed a linear voltammetric response at concentration ranging from 2.40 × 10−7 to 3.50 × 10−6 mol L−1, with detection and quantification limits of 4.15 × 10−7 mol L−1 and 1.38 × 10−6 mol L−1, respectively. The recovery rate of IMC in spiked river water samples varied from 90–95%. Thus, this sensor can be a promising tool for the analysis and monitoring of IMC in complex environmental matrices.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
