An Invisible Minority: An Examination of Migrant Education

    Get PDF
If one had the task of identifying the most educationally disadvantaged group of youngsters in the United States, the ones who under-perform all other groups enrolled in school, who have the highest school dropout rate, who have the lowest academic achievement level and highest number of school failures, no doubt the group readily identified would be the children of migrant agricultural families. These children face a unique set of problems. The migrant family, moving from state to state, alone or in groups, has created a unique life style reflecting the unpredictable agricultural conditions. Available statistics concerning the educational plight of migrant children are deplorable

[Review of] Joe R. Feagin and Clairece Booher Feagin. Discrimination American Style: Institutional Racism and Sexism, 2nd ed.

Discrimination American Style seeks to answer two basic questions: Why do women, blacks, and other minorities experience discrimination in the United States? and What types of discriminatory behaviors continue in practice today? Feagin and Feagin attempt to integrate existing research on issues of racism and sexism which focuses on the overall theme of institutional discrimination. They examine similarities and differences between racist and sexist behaviors and practices in order to determine whether or not discrimination exists, and if so, to what degree. They reject the popular belief that prejudice and bigotry are causes of discrimination and argue that practices which often appear to be neutral may in fact be evidence of indirect or subtle institutional discrimination

The Metamorphosis of the Defense Industry

    Get PDF
The downsizing of the United States defense industry in recent years had a multitude of effects on defense and defense-related manufacturers. Besides the inevitable loss of jobs, these firms essentially had to reinvent themselves in order to compete in the commercial sector more effectively. Moreover, the defense cutbacks also resulted in implications for the U.S. as a whole. These include questionable preparedness for armed conflict, as well as the potential loss of defense-related suppliers that could affect the ability to sustain armed conflict. These and other insights were gleaned from plant-level interviews and tours of several, small defense-related manufacturers

Despite earlier efforts to reduce prejudice and eliminate discrimination, the decade of the 1980s continues to be marked by ongoing assaults on human dignity. Enforcement of earlier hard-earned civil rights laws are declining, oppression of various groups and individuals in our society continues, and attitudes of prejudice and examples of discrimination are reported in the media on a regular basis. Adults are often unable or unwilling to confront their own values, beliefs, and behaviors concerning human oppression. As a result, young people are often presented with inaccurate, incomplete, or inadequate information concerning forces which help to shape our institutions and culture
