Why do People Stay? Insider Advantages and Immobility
The low mobility of people in Europe is considered a problem for adjustment to asymmetric shocks and regional convergence in the European Monetary Union. We suggest a complement to the traditional migration theories, the insider advantages approach to explain why most Europeans prefer to stay. Staying immobile they have accumulated work- and leisure-oriented insider advantages that are location-specific and would be lost in the case of emigration. Therefore, the longer people have stayed - and the more insider advantages they have accumulated -, the less likely they are to move. Using a new micro dataset covering all people resident in Sweden in 1994 and their mobility experience since 1985, we find a strong positive duration dependence of the probability to stay. Traditional micro-economic characteristics prove helpful in explaining immobility, while regional macro-economic differences have surprisingly little impact on individual mobility decisions. A large proportion of the moves between Swedish labour markets seem to be related to specific life-course events rather than to pure labour market issues. Denn eigentlich sollten die teilweise beträchtlichen Einkommens - und Beschäftigungsunterschiede zu weit mehr Migration innerhalb der EU führen. In diesem Diskussionspapier entwickeln wir eine Idee, die sehr wohl zu erklären vermag, weshalb für die meisten Menschen "stehen" die bessere Alternative als "gehen" ist. Der Insider-Ansatz macht deutlich, weshalb für die individuelle Entscheidung eine grenz- und kulturraumüberschreitende Wanderung die Ausnahme und nicht die Regel ist. Die empirische Überprüfung mit Hilfe eines neuen originären Mikro-Datensets, das die gesamte schwedische Wohnbevölkerung enthält, bestätigt die These, dass die Verweil- dauer einen direkten positiven Einfluss auf die Verharrenswahrscheinlichkeit ausübt. How Individual self-regulation affects group regulation and performance: A shared regulation intervention
This study explored the relationship between individual self-regulated learning (SRL), socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL), and group performance plus the effect of an intervention promoting SSRL. We hypothesized that SRL would influence SSRL and group performance as groups with high SRL students will be better regulated and that the intervention would promote SSRL over time. The results revealed a significant relationship between SRL and SSRL, but no significant effects of the intervention on group performance. The limitations of the intervention are discussed and form the basis for future design of environments to promote SSRL. The main conclusion is that SRL is an important predictor of SSRL and should be considered when designing small group activities and their environments
Vector solitons in (2+1) dimensions
We address the problem of existence and stability of vector spatial solitons
formed by two incoherently interacting optical beams in bulk Kerr and saturable
media. We identify families of (2+1)-dimensional two-mode self-trapped beams,
with and without a topological charge, and describe their properties

•Hiljattain on julkaistu uudet suomalaiset aikuisten spirometrian viitearvot, joiden mittaukset kattavat myös vanhusväestön 84 vuoden ikään asti. •Uusien arvojen tulkinnassa otetaan käyttöön mitatun arvon poikkeaman määrä viitearvopopulaation keskiarvosta z-yksikköinä (sama kuin SD). Muutoksen vaikeusaste arvioidaan z-arvon mukaan. •Normaalin variaation alaraja on kliinisissä tutkimuksissa kaikille spirometriamuuttujille sama (z-arvona –1,65). Terveistä 95 % asettuu tämän rajan yläpuolelle. •Syntyperältään ulkomaalaisten lasten ja aikuisten tutkimuksissa suositellaan käytettäväksi uusia kansainvälisiä GLI2012-viitearvoja. •Suomalaisten lasten tutkimuksissa suositellaan käytettäväksi edelleen vanhoja suomalaisia viitearvoja, mutta niiden kliinisessä soveltamisessa suositellaan nyt z-arvojen käyttöä. •Aikuisten vanhat suomalaiset viitearvot eivät ole perustuneet todellisiin mittaustuloksiin yli 64-vuotiailla. Feeling of knowing and restudy choices
Feeling-of-knowing judgments (FOK-Js) reflect people’s confidence that they would be able to recognize a currently unrecallable item. Although much research has been devoted to the factors determining the magnitude and accuracy of FOK-Js, much less work has addressed the issue of whether FOK-Js are related to any form of metacognitive control over memory processes. In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that FOK-Js are related to participants’ choices of which unrecallable items should be restudied. In three experiments, we showed that participants tend to choose for restudy items with high FOK-Js, both when they are explicitly asked to choose for restudy items that can be mastered in the restudy session (Exps. 1a and 2) and when such specific instructions are omitted (Exp. 1b). The study further demonstrated that increasing FOK-Js via priming cues affects restudy choices, even though it does not affect recall directly. Finally, Experiment 2 showed the strategy of restudying unrecalled items with high FOK-Js to be adaptive, because the efficacy of restudy is greater for these items than for items with low FOK-Js. Altogether, the present findings underscore an important role of FOK-Js for the metacognitive control of study operations
A Method to Polarize Stored Antiprotons to a High Degree
Polarized antiprotons can be produced in a storage ring by spin--dependent
interaction in a purely electron--polarized hydrogen gas target. The polarizing
process is based on spin transfer from the polarized electrons of the target
atoms to the orbiting antiprotons. After spin filtering for about two beam
lifetimes at energies MeV using a dedicated large acceptance
ring, the antiproton beam polarization would reach . Polarized
antiprotons would open new and unique research opportunities for spin--physics
experiments in interactions
Is our Sun a Singleton?
Most stars are formed in a cluster or association, where the number density
of stars can be high. This means that a large fraction of initially-single
stars will undergo close encounters with other stars and/or exchange into
binaries. We describe how such close encounters and exchange encounters can
affect the properties of a planetary system around a single star. We define a
singleton as a single star which has never suffered close encounters with other
stars or spent time within a binary system. It may be that planetary systems
similar to our own solar system can only survive around singletons. Close
encounters or the presence of a stellar companion will perturb the planetary
system, often leaving planets on tighter and more eccentric orbits. Thus
planetary systems which initially resembled our own solar system may later more

Control of hyperglycaemia in paediatric intensive care (CHiP): study protocol.
BACKGROUND: There is increasing evidence that tight blood glucose (BG) control improves outcomes in critically ill adults. Children show similar hyperglycaemic responses to surgery or critical illness. However it is not known whether tight control will benefit children given maturational differences and different disease spectrum. METHODS/DESIGN: The study is an randomised open trial with two parallel groups to assess whether, for children undergoing intensive care in the UK aged <or= 16 years who are ventilated, have an arterial line in-situ and are receiving vasoactive support following injury, major surgery or in association with critical illness in whom it is anticipated such treatment will be required to continue for at least 12 hours, tight control will increase the numbers of days alive and free of mechanical ventilation at 30 days, and lead to improvement in a range of complications associated with intensive care treatment and be cost effective. Children in the tight control group will receive insulin by intravenous infusion titrated to maintain BG between 4 and 7.0 mmol/l. Children in the control group will be treated according to a standard current approach to BG management. Children will be followed up to determine vital status and healthcare resources usage between discharge and 12 months post-randomisation. Information regarding overall health status, global neurological outcome, attention and behavioural status will be sought from a subgroup with traumatic brain injury (TBI). A difference of 2 days in the number of ventilator-free days within the first 30 days post-randomisation is considered clinically important. Conservatively assuming a standard deviation of a week across both trial arms, a type I error of 1% (2-sided test), and allowing for non-compliance, a total sample size of 1000 patients would have 90% power to detect this difference. To detect effect differences between cardiac and non-cardiac patients, a target sample size of 1500 is required. An economic evaluation will assess whether the costs of achieving tight BG control are justified by subsequent reductions in hospitalisation costs. DISCUSSION: The relevance of tight glycaemic control in this population needs to be assessed formally before being accepted into standard practice
EMon : embodied monitorization

evident consequence of population ageing. There are already some
monitorization environments which aim to monitor these persons while they
remain at home. This, however, although better than delocalizing the elder to
some kind of institution, may not still be the ideal solution, as it forces them to
stay inside the home more than they wished, as going out means lack of
accompaniment and a consequent sensation of fear. In this paper we propose
EMon: a monitorization device small enough to be worn by its users, although
powerful enough to provide the higher level monitorization systems with vital
information about the user and the environment around him. We hope to allow
the representation of an intelligent environment to move with its users, instead
of being static, mandatorily associated to a single physical location. The first
prototype of EMon, as presented in this paper, provides environmental data as
well as GPS coordinates and pictures that are useful to describe the context of
its user
