Discussions on Dynamic Interaction Between Piles and Large Particle Rockfill
A series of full-scale laterally loaded pile tests were conducted at the University of California, San Diego in 2007 in order to obtain a better understanding about pile-rockfill interaction for seismic design of port facilities. The project was composed of three experiments where the cyclic lateral loads were cyclically applied at the heads of the piles fully instrumented using a hydraulic actuator. Comparing the experimental and numerical results, assessments of p-y curves used for current design practice were performed. As a result, it was found that the soil pile springs currently used for design gave much lower lateral resistance than recorded in the experiments. This series of the experiments could provide very useful information for deformation based design, and effects of loading rate and type on behavior of pile-soil system still need to be considered to develop a more sophisticated seismic design. In the first part of this paper, a brief description of the experiments and some examples of the test results are presented. Based on the test results and the observations during the tests, some of possible factors affecting soil-pile interaction under dynamic cyclic load conditions are discussed in the second part
Thermal Conductivity of the Quasi One-Dimensional Spin System Sr_2_V_3_O_9_
We have measured the thermal conductivity along the [101] direction,
kappa_[101]_, along the [10-1] direction, kappa_[10-1]_, and along the b-axis,
kappa_b_, of the quasi one-dimensional S=1/2 spin system Sr_2_V_3_O_9_ in
magnetic fields up to 14 T, in order to find the thermal conductivity due to
spinons and to clarify whether the spin-chains run along the [101] or [10-1]
direction. It has been found that both kappa_[101]_, kappa_[10-1]_ and kappa_b_
show one peak around 10 K in zero field and that the magnitude of kappa_[10-1]_
is larger than those of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_. By the application of
magnetic field along the heat current, the peak of kappa_[10-1]_ is markedly
suppressed, while the peaks of kappa_[101]_ and kappa_b_ little change. These
results indicate that there is a large contribution of spinons to kappa_[10-1]_
and suggest that the spin-chains run along the [10-1] direction.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure
Calabi-Yau manifolds from pairs of non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds
Most of Calabi-Yau manifolds that have been considered by physicists are
complete intersection Calabi-Yau manifolds of toric varieties or some quotients
of product types. Purpose of this paper is to introduce a different and rather
new kind of construction method of Calabi-Yau manifolds by pasting two
non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. We will also in some details explain a
curious and mysterious similarity with construction of some -manifolds
(also called Joyce manifolds), which are base spaces for M-theory.Comment: 10 pages. Accepted for publication in JHE
Role of satellite cell-derived l-serine in the dorsal root ganglion in paclitaxel-induced painful peripheral neuropathy
Paclitaxel is one of the most commonly used antineoplastic drugs for the treatment of solid tumors. Unfortunately, its use is often associated with dose-limiting painful peripheral neuropathy and subsequent neuropathic pain that is resistant to standard analgesics. However, there are few clinically available drugs or drug classes for the treatment of paclitaxel-induced neuropathy due to a lack of information regarding the mechanisms responsible for it. In this study, we examined the involvement of L-serine in paclitaxel-induced hyperalgesia/allodynia and decrease in sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV). We used a preclinical rat model of paclitaxel-induced painful peripheral neuropathy. Response to von Frey filaments, SNCV, 3-phosphoglycerate dehydrogenase (3PGDH) expression, and L-serine concentration were examined. Effects of L-serine administration were also investigated. Paclitaxel treatment induced mechanical allodynia/hyperalgesia and reduction of SNCV. Paclitaxel also decreased the L-serine concentration in the dorsal root ganglion (DRG) but not in the sciatic nerve or spinal cord. In addition, paclitaxel decreased expression of 3PGDH, a biosynthetic enzyme of L-serine, in the DRG. Immunohistochemistry showed that 3PGDH was localized in satellite cells but not in neurons in the DRG. Intraperitoneal administration of L-serine improved both paclitaxel-induced mechanical allodynia/hyperalgesia and the reduction of SNCV. These results suggest that satellite cell-derived L-serine in the DRG plays an important role in paclitaxel-induced painful peripheral neuropathy. These findings may lead to novel strategies for the treatment of paclitaxel-induced painful peripheral neuropathy.ArticleNEUROSCIENCE. 174(0):190-199 (2011)journal articl
Quantum symmetries and exceptional collections
We study the interplay between discrete quantum symmetries at certain points
in the moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications, and the associated
identities that the geometric realization of D-brane monodromies must satisfy.
We show that in a wide class of examples, both local and compact, the monodromy
identities in question always follow from a single mathematical statement. One
of the simplest examples is the Z_5 symmetry at the Gepner point of the
quintic, and the associated D-brane monodromy identity
Anti-Pluricanonical Systems On Q-Fano Threefolds
We investigate birationality of the anti-pluricanonical map , the
rational map defined by the anti-pluricanonical system , on
-Fano threefolds.Comment: 18 page
Defect and Hodge numbers of hypersurfaces
We define defect for hypersurfaces with A-D-E singularities in complex
projective normal Cohen-Macaulay fourfolds having some vanishing properties of
Bott-type and prove formulae for Hodge numbers of big resolutions of such
hypersurfaces. We compute Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained as
small resolutions of cuspidal triple sextics and double octics with higher A_j
singularities.Comment: 25 page
Holomorphic symmetric differentials and a birational characterization of Abelian Varieties
A generically generated vector bundle on a smooth projective variety yields a
rational map to a Grassmannian, called Kodaira map. We answer a previous
question, raised by the asymptotic behaviour of such maps, giving rise to a
birational characterization of abelian varieties.
In particular we prove that, under the conjectures of the Minimal Model
Program, a smooth projective variety is birational to an abelian variety if and
only if it has Kodaira dimension 0 and some symmetric power of its cotangent
sheaf is generically generated by its global sections.Comment: UPDATED: more details added on main proo
Derived Categories of Coherent Sheaves and Triangulated Categories of Singularities
In this paper we establish an equivalence between the category of graded
D-branes of type B in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W
and the triangulated category of singularities of the fiber of W over zero. The
main result is a theorem that shows that the graded triangulated category of
singularities of the cone over a projective variety is connected via a fully
faithful functor to the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on the
base of the cone. This implies that the category of graded D-branes of type B
in Landau-Ginzburg models with homogeneous superpotential W is connected via a
fully faithful functor to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the
projective variety defined by the equation W=0.Comment: 26 pp., LaTe
