Tight contact structures and genus one fibered knots

We study contact structures compatible with genus one open book decompositions with one boundary component. Any monodromy for such an open book can be written as a product of Dehn twists around dual non-separating curves in the once-punctured torus. Given such a product, we supply an algorithm to determine whether the corresponding contact structure is tight or overtwisted. We rely on Ozsv{\'a}th-Szab{\'o} Heegaard Floer homology in our construction and, in particular, we completely identify the LL-spaces with genus one, one boundary component, pseudo-Anosov open book decompositions. Lastly, we reveal a new infinite family of hyperbolic three-manifolds with no co-orientable taut foliations, extending the family discovered in \cite{RSS}.Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures. Added figures, extended result to all monodromies, and added sections 5 and

Democracy in Crisis, the Specter of Authoritarianism, and the Future of Higher Education

As the forces of neoliberalism gain ascendency in the United States, democratic public spheres must confront a growing crisis—one that impacts subjectivity as much as the material conditions in which most people must now struggle to survive. Politics has become an extension of war as a range of groups are now considered disposable, including immigrants, low-income and poor ethnic minority youth, the elderly, the unemployed, the homeless, and people of color. Higher education is an important sphere that has historically supported a democratic public culture by infusing students with moral and political agency, critical thinking, and public values. But higher education, like American popular culture, is now in the grip of state-supported corporate power that seeks to reproduce and reward an orientation to the world infused with authoritarian ideas, practices, and principles. While facing widespread demoralization, higher education must be vigorously defended against corporatization because it is one of the few public spheres left that offers a space for critical dialogue, exchange, and dissent. Indeed, if American democracy is to have a future, all the various pedagogical apparatuses available in the larger culture must be embraced and transformed in order to support critical thinking, public intellectuals, and a public culture capable of exerting a formative educational influence in favor of democratic freedom, justice, and equality

Daubert v. Merrell Dow: Is This Just What the EMF Doctor Ordered?

In Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the Supreme Court announced a new standard for the admissibility of expert testimony at trial. This decision could have a significant effect on litigation where both sides will hotly contest whether exposure to a particular agent actually caused the plaintiffs injury. Such is the case with exposure to low frequency Electromagnetic Fields (EMF). Scientists do not agree whether exposure to EMF causes injury to humans, but plaintiffs are claiming they were injured by EMF and are seeking compensation. In this article, the nature, sources, and studies of EMF health effects are described and the possible effects of the Daubert decision on this controversy are explored

Unidentified Human Remains And The True Nature Of Love: An Exploration on the Art of Directing

Brad Fraser\u27s play Unidentified Human Remains and the True Nature of Love deals with love and relationships in a society devoid of morality and fearful of emotional commitment. This thesis focused on translating the conflicts in the script into action for performance, and creating a strong ensemble of actors, designers and crew. My process included an analysis of the play, examining it with particular attention to character and story. I also studied the playwright\u27s previous and subsequent work as well as reviews to better prepare myself for the challenges of mounting this show. The next stage was the application of this analysis and research to the physical production. My chief area of concern here was to create a collaborative environment that would enhance the creative processes of everyone involved. In working with the company I focused constantly on creating a performance that was unified by my shared vision of the script. My ability to create this ensemble was reflected in the results we achieved. Although there are areas where the show could have been stronger, the energy of its performance and validity of its message made it a surprising success

This essay attempts to address how the Parkland youth protesters are rewriting the nature of resistance as both an individual and collective effort by creating a new vision of hope and mass struggle. Central to their efforts is an attempt to make education central to politics itself and in doing so they have redefined education as a way of translating personal issues into larger systemic concerns, changing the way people see things, and investing a variety of modes of communication in order to use elements of belief and persuasion as appropriate weapons of struggle. Using new digital technologies and media, these young people are redefining the landscapes of pedagogy and resistance. This paper explores their efforts as a new way to connect politics and education. Introduction to Chapter from The Abandoned Generation written for this issue

This article was written at a very dire time in American history. Motivated by both a sense of outrage and hope, it attempted to identify a number of dangerous threats to democracy at home and abroad as well as and to offer a productive series of analyses of how to stop their poisonous effects on all aspects of public and private life. What was not clear to me at the time was the extent to which the horrific acts of September 11, 2001, would be used as a pretext to reinforce not simply the political and economic power of a number of hard-wired ideologues among a conservative, corporate and religious elite, but also to usher in an imperial presidency and administration that shredded civil liberties, lied to the American public to legitimate sending young American troops to Iraq, alienated most of the international community with a blatant exercise of arrogant power, tarnished the highest offices of government with unsavory corporate alliances, used political power to unabashedly pursue legislative polices that favor the rich and punish the poor, and disabled those public spheres not governed by the logic of the market
