Primary splenic hydatid cyst: a case report with characteristic imaging appearance
A middle-aged lady presented with pain, tenderness and swelling in the left hypochondrium since one month. She had a history of contact with dogs and grazing animals. Sonography and computed tomography showed the pathognomonic signs of hydatid disease. The patient refused surgical treatment. She was discharged on Albendazole therapy and did not return for a follow up
Tuberculosis of the scapula
Tuberculosis (TB) of the scapula is an extremely rare presentation of osteoarticular tuberculosis. In a tuberculosis endemic setting with a rising burden of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, this rare presentation may become more frequent. The common presentation is with longstanding Complaints of pain and swelling in the shoulder region, typically in young adults. Classic radiographic features include a well defined radiolucent lesion with minimal sequesteration. The erythrocyte sedimentation rate is usually elevated and initially these patients are frequently mis-diagnosed and thus a high index of clinical suspicion is required. Medical therapy with antituberculous drugs is the standard modality of treatment. This case serves to higlight the salient features of scapular TB
Transition Metal Complexes of Sulfonamide Based Schiff Bases: Preparation Characterization and Antibacterial Activity.
Metal complexes of Cu (II), Co (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) of Schiff based derived from 2-hydroxy-7-methylquinoline-3-carbaldehyde and 2-hydroxy-7-methoxyquinoline-3-carbaldehyde with 3-aminobenzenesulfonamide have been prepared and characterized on the basis of their physical characteristics, micro-analytical data, 1H NMR, FTIR and UV spectrum data. The spectrum data confirmed coordination of Schiff base with metal through imine nitrogen and oxygen atom. While electronic spectrum data confirmed the octahedral geometry of the complexes. Â Biological screening effect of Schiff base and their metal complexes have been studied against gram positive and gram negative bacteria by disc diffusion technique. Biological activities show that the complexes exhibit higher antibacterial activity than that of Schiff base against tested bacteria
OMNI: Open Mind Neuromodulation Interface for accelerated research and discovery
Electrical neuromodulation is an approved therapy for a number of neurologic disease states, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Essential Tremor, epilepsy and neuropathic pain. Neuromodulatory strategies are also being piloted for an increasing number of additional indications, including Major Depressive Disorder, Dystonia, and addiction. The development of implantable devices capable of both neural sensing and adaptive stimulation may prove essential for both improving therapeutic outcomes and expanding the neuromodulation indication space. Nevertheless, an increasingly fragmented device ecosystem forces researchers and therapy developers to customize and reinvent data visualization, clinician engagement, and device control software to support individual clinical studies. Each hardware platform provides a unique software interface to the implanted neurostimulator, making pre-existing code from prior studies difficult to leverage for future work - a hindrance that will expand as device technology diversifies. Here, we envision, detail, and demonstrate the use of a novel software architecture, OMNI, that accelerates neuromodulation research by providing a flexible, platform- and device-agnostic interface for clinical research and therapy development

Trehalose enhances mitochondria deficits in human NPC1 mutant fibroblasts but disrupts mouse Purkinje cell dendritic growth ex vivo.
Lysosomes play important roles in catabolism, nutrient sensing, metabolic signaling, and homeostasis. NPC1 deficiency disrupts lysosomal function by inducing cholesterol accumulation that leads to early neurodegeneration in Niemann-Pick type C (NPC) disease. Mitochondria pathology and deficits in NPC1 deficient cells are associated with impaired lysosomal proteolysis and metabolic signaling. It is thought that activation of the transcription factor TFEB, an inducer of lysosome biogenesis, restores lysosomal-autophagy activity in lysosomal storage disorders. Here, we investigated the effect of trehalose, a TFEB activator, in the mitochondria pathology of NPC1 mutant fibroblasts in vitro and in mouse developmental Purkinje cells ex vivo. We found that in NPC1 mutant fibroblasts, serum starvation or/and trehalose treatment, both activators of TFEB, reversed mitochondria fragmentation to a more tubular mitochondrion. Trehalose treatment also decreased the accumulation of Filipin+ cholesterol in NPC1 mutant fibroblasts. However, trehalose treatment in cerebellar organotypic slices (COSCs) from wild-type and Npc1nmf164 mice caused mitochondria fragmentation and lack of dendritic growth and degeneration in developmental Purkinje cells. Our data suggest, that although trehalose successfully restores mitochondria length and decreases cholesterol accumulation in NPC1 mutant fibroblasts, in COSCs, Purkinje cells mitochondria and dendritic growth are negatively affected possibly through the overactivation of the TFEB-lysosomal-autophagy pathway
Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory
Static and vibration analysis of functionally graded beams using refined shear deformation theory is presented. The developed theory, which does not require shear correction factor, accounts for shear deformation effect and coupling coming from the material anisotropy. Governing equations of motion are derived from the Hamilton's principle. The resulting coupling is referred to as triply coupled axial-flexural response. A two-noded Hermite-cubic element with five degree-of-freedom per node is developed to solve the problem. Numerical results are obtained for functionally graded beams with simply-supported, cantilever-free and clamped-clamped boundary conditions to investigate effects of the power-law exponent and modulus ratio on the displacements, natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes
