Arrays of Nano-Electromechanical Biosensors Functionalized by Microcontact Printing
The biofunctionalization of nanoelectromechanical structures is critical for
the development of new classes of biosensors displaying improved performances
and higher-level of integration. We propose a modified microcontact printing
method for the functionalization and passivation of large arrays of
nanocantilevers in a single, self-aligned step. Using fluorescence microscopy
and resonant frequency measurements, we demonstrate (1) the bioactivity and the
anti-fouling property of deposited antibodies and BSA molecules and (2) the
preservation of the nanostructures' mechanical integrity.Comment: 20 pages, 5 figure
Levels and Correlates of Non-Adherence to WHO Recommended Inter-Birth Intervals in Rufiji, Tanzania.
Poorly spaced pregnancies have been documented worldwide to result in adverse maternal and child health outcomes. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a minimum inter-birth interval of 33 months between two consecutive live births in order to reduce the risk of adverse maternal and child health outcomes. However, birth spacing practices in many developing countries, including Tanzania, remain scantly addressed. METHODS: Longitudinal data collected in the Rufiji Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) from January 1999 to December 2010 were analyzed to investigate birth spacing practices among women of childbearing age. The outcome variable, non-adherence to the minimum inter-birth interval, constituted all inter-birth intervals <33 months long. Inter-birth intervals >=33 months long were considered to be adherent to the recommendation. Chi-Square was used as a test of association between non-adherence and each of the explanatory variables. Factors affecting non-adherence were identified using a multilevel logistic model. Data analysis was conducted using STATA (11) statistical software. RESULTS: A total of 15,373 inter-birth intervals were recorded from 8,980 women aged 15--49 years in Rufiji district over the follow-up period of 11 years. The median inter-birth interval was 33.4 months. Of the 15,373 inter-birth intervals, 48.4% were below the WHO recommended minimum length of 33 months between two live births. Non-adherence was associated with younger maternal age, low maternal education, multiple births of the preceding pregnancy, non-health facility delivery of the preceding birth, being an in-migrant resident, multi-parity and being married. CONCLUSION: Generally, one in every two inter-birth intervals among 15--49 year-old women in Rufiji district is poorly spaced, with significant variations by socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics of mothers and newborns. Maternal, newborn and child health services should be improved with a special emphasis on community- and health facility-based optimum birth spacing education in order to enhance health outcomes of mothers and their babies, especially in rural settings
Comprehensive characterization of molecular interactions based on nanomechanics
Molecular interaction is a key concept in our understanding of the biological mechanisms of life. Two physical properties change when one molecular partner binds to another. Firstly, the masses combine and secondly, the structure of at least one binding partner is altered, mechanically transducing the binding into subsequent biological reactions. Here we present a nanomechanical micro-array technique for bio-medical research, which not only monitors the binding of effector molecules to their target but also the subsequent effect on a biological system in vitro. This label-free and real-time method directly and simultaneously tracks mass and nanomechanical changes at the sensor interface using micro-cantilever technology. To prove the concept we measured lipid vesicle (approximately 748*10(6) Da) adsorption on the sensor interface followed by subsequent binding of the bee venom peptide melittin (2840 Da) to the vesicles. The results show the high dynamic range of the instrument and that measuring the mass and structural changes simultaneously allow a comprehensive discussion of molecular interactions
Are men well served by family planning programs?
Although the range of contraceptives includes methods for men, namely condoms, vasectomy and withdrawal that men use directly, and the Standard Days Method (SDM) that requires their participation, family planning programming has primarily focused on women. What is known about reaching men as contraceptive users? This paper draws from a review of 47 interventions that reached men and proposes 10 key considerations for strengthening programming for men as contraceptive users. A review of programming shows that men and boys are not particularly well served by programs. Most programs operate from the perspective that women are contraceptive users and that men should support their partners, with insufficient attention to reaching men as contraceptive users in their own right. The notion that family planning is women’s business only is outdated. There is sufficient evidence demonstrating men’s desire for information and services, as well as men’s positive response to existing programming to warrant further programming for men as FP users. The key considerations focus on getting information and services where men and boys need it; addressing gender norms that affect men’s attitudes and use while respecting women’s autonomy; reaching adolescent boys; including men as users in policies and guidelines; scaling up successful programming; filling gaps with implementation research and monitoring & evaluation; and creating more contraceptive options for men
A tunnelling displacement sensor based on a squeezable molecular bilayer
For measuring nanoscale displacements, air/vacuum tunnelling is the most sensitive method. However, the alignment mechanism is difficult to scale down for integrated devices. Here, we present a tunnelling displacement sensor based on a squeezable molecular bilayer, which was built from two stacked self-assembled monolayers of mercaptohexadecanoic acid. The bilayer provides an inherent vertical alignment between the tunnelling electrodes. Squeezing of the bilayer leads to an exponential change in the tunnel current. Nanometre displacement sensitivity was achieved
Chladni figures revisited based on nanomechanics
Chladni patterns based on nanomechanics in the microfluidic environment are presented. In contrast with the macroscopic observations in the gaseous environment, nanoparticles are found to move to the nodes, whereas micron-sized particles move to the antinodes of the vibrating interface. This opens the door to size-based sorting of particles in microfluidic systems, and to highly parallel and controlled assembly of biosensors and nanoelectronic circuits
