Spectrum-Aware and Energy-Adaptive Reliable Transport for Internet of Sensing Things
© 1967-2012 IEEE. Wireless sensors equipped with cognitive radio, i.e., cognitive radio sensor networks (CRSN), can access the spectrum in an opportunistic manner and coexist with licensed users to mitigate the crowded spectrum problem and provide ubiquitous remote event monitoring and tracking for cyber-physical systems. In this paper, a novel transport layer protocol for CRSN, spectrum-aware energy-adaptive reliable transport protocol is presented to enable energy-adaptive collaborative event sensing in spectrum-scarce cyber-physical systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to specifically devise a reliable event transport scheme for CRSN
A Molecular Communication Scheme to Estimate the State of Biochemical Processes on a Lab-on-a-Chip
International audienceA key application of advanced spectroscopy methods is to estimate equilibrium states of biochemical processes in situ and in vivo. Nevertheless, an often present difficulty is the requirement that the biochemical process and its environment (such as the substrate) satisfy special conditions. One means of resolving this issue is to communicate information about the equilibrium states of the biochemical process to another location, supported via microfluidic channles within a lab-on-a-chip. In this paper, we develop a signaling strategy and estimation algorithms for equilibrium states of a biochemical process. For a toggle-switch circuit model important in cellular differentiation studies, we study via simulation the tradeoff between the rate of obtaining spectroscopy measurements and the estimation error, providing insights into requirements of spectroscopy devices for high-throughput biological assays. Wireless Underground Channel Modeling
A comprehensive treatment of wireless underground channel modeling is presented in this chapter. The impacts of the soil on bandwidth and path loss are analyzed. A mechanism for the UG channel sounding and multipath characteristics analysis is discussed. Moreover, novel time-domain impulse response model for WUC is reviewed with the explanation of model parameters and statistics. Furthermore, different types of the through-the-soil wireless communications are surveyed. Finally, the chapter concludes with discussion of the UG wireless statistical model and path loss model for through-the-soil wireless communications in decision agriculture. The model presented in this chapter is also validated with empirical data
Signals in the Soil: An Introduction to Wireless Underground Communications
In this chapter, wireless underground (UG) communications are introduced. A detailed overview of WUC is given. A comprehensive review of research challenges in WUC is presented. The evolution of underground wireless is also discussed. Moreover, different component of UG communications is wireless. The WUC system architecture is explained with a detailed discussion of the anatomy of an underground mote. The examples of UG wireless communication systems are explored. Furthermore, the differences of UG wireless and over-the-air wireless are debated. Different types of wireless underground channel (e.g., In-Soil, Soil-to-Air, and Air-to-Soil) are reported as well
Internet of Things in Agricultural Innovation and Security
The agricultural Internet of Things (Ag-IoT) paradigm has tremendous potential in transparent integration of underground soil sensing, farm machinery, and sensor-guided irrigation systems with the complex social network of growers, agronomists, crop consultants, and advisors. The aim of the IoT in agricultural innovation and security chapter is to present agricultural IoT research and paradigm to promote sustainable production of safe, healthy, and profitable crop and animal agricultural products. This chapter covers the IoT platform to test optimized management strategies, engage farmer and industry groups, and investigate new and traditional technology drivers that will enhance resilience of the farmers to the socio-environmental changes. A review of state-of-the-art communication architectures and underlying sensing technologies and communication mechanisms is presented with coverage of recent advances in the theory and applications of wireless underground communications. Major challenges in Ag-IoT design and implementation are also discussed

Communication (MoNaCom) Molecular Transport in Microfluidic Channels for Flow-induced Molecular Communication
Abstract—Fluid flow inside microfluidic channels can alleviate excessive dispersion and delay in diffusion-based molecular communication and lead to the emergence of Flow-induced Molecular Communication (FMC). To develop communication techniques for FMC, analysis of molecular transport by flow, i.e., convection, inside microfluidic channels is essential. In this paper, molecular transport, i.e., concentration propagation, is studied for FMC in rectangular microfluidic channels. First, solution of flow velocity inside rectangular microfluidic channels is presented. Then, impulse response and transfer function are determined for a point source based on the flow velocity, diffusion constant, channel cross-section, and length parameters. Frequency and phase responses for concentration propagation in rectangular microfluidic channels with different cross-section and length parameters are revealed via numerical results. I
Validating new product creativity in the eastern context of Malaysia
This paper examines the etic vs. emic nature of the new product creativity (NPC) construct often used in the strategic marketing and management literatures. The current study compares the NPC measure developed by Im and Workman (2004) in the West in an Eastern context by utilizing data from 172 Malaysian companies. The results show that NPC, which is the combination of new product (NP) novelty and NP meaningfulness, has a different connotation in Malaysia. The findings demonstrate that from the novelty perspective NPC is an emic phenomenon. After the construct validation process, the Western claim that NPC is a seed of firm performance is tested. The results verify NPC's relationship with NP performance as a source of competitive advantage for Malaysian firms and thus suggest that this relationship is etic in nature. These findings have significant implications for firms' global innovation strategies
