The four core coordinates of human existenceculture society religion and family- have continued in locating women and men in specific social contexts Using a qualitative data collection approach the study examines the context of married Yoruba women s sexual and health rights focusing on their rights to make responsible sexual and reproductive decisions Findings reveal interplay between gender and sexuality Beliefs and images about masculinity and femininity result in the men feeling that they must initiate sex dominate and conquer their wives without being sensitive to their emotional needs The logic that follows from this is the fact that men presumably are granted the unconditional sexual access to their wives while women on the other hand lack sexual autonomy The study concludes that there is relativity of power between married men and women in sexual intercourse no matter the level of the woman s socio-economic status instigated by the social conditionin

Triploidy induction in Heterobranchus longifilis (Family: Clariidae) by cold shock

    Get PDF
Triploid was induced in African Catfish (Heterobranchus longifilis) by cold shocking activated eggs at 5 degree C for forty minutes starting 3-4 minutes after fertilization. Triploidy was confirmed from mitotic chromosomes prepared from embryo which showed 100% triploidy in the cold shocking treatment and 100% diploidy in the control treatmen

Embryogenesis of Heterobranchus longifilis (Curvier and Valenciennes, 1840)

Studies on development of H. longifilis (Curvier and Valenciennes, 1840) were conducted at a temperature of 25EC ( 1Ec) in aquaria tanks continuous development were monitored with the use of wild Heerbrugy photomacroscope and length of yolk and larva were monitored using Stereo Olympus microscope with ocular micrometer. The division into animal and vegetal poles was observed 22 minutes after activation. The first cleavage occurred 65 minutes after activation while the second division which was perpendicular to the first line of division occurred 74 minutes after activation. This was quickly followed by the third and fourth cleavage at 80th and 82nd minutes after activation respectively. Morular stage was reached at 4 hours 20 minutes with formation of optic bud at 14 hours 35 minutes. (DBO) Developing embryo hatched after 27 hours of activation at a mean length of 6.63 and mean yolk length of 2.17. Yolk size decrease at an average rate of 38.5 % till the 5th day of total absorption. Growth of larvae proceeded faster in tail-anus region than in anus-snout portion of the body. The rate of yolk absorption and larva development (survival) as monitored in this work gives important information in Research and development programme for H. longifilis larva - an important aspect of Research development and implementation of appropriate technologies in small scale fisherie

Democracy, political participation and good governance in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The practice of democracy in Nigeria over a decade ago has not yielded much needed good governance. This is because democracy is practiced in such a way that responsible and competent people are scared away. Scholars and keen observers have attempted at unraveling the factors militating against translating democracy into good governance. The paper revealed that democratisation in Nigeria is pervaded by electoral violence, manipulation of election results and political participation constraints. These identified challenges have made it impossible to attain consolidated democracy that can, in turn, facilitate good governance. Democracy is a catalyst for accountability, transparency and responsive government which brings about good governance. The paper insisted that governance collapse in Nigeria is reflexive of the perfunctory role of the political actors and it adopted elite theory to reinforce this argument. The paper adopted content analysis as a means of data gathering. It dwelt extensively on the synergy between democracy, political participation and good governance but queried the artificial gulf between them in Nigeria. It concluded by putting forth viable and pragmatic way forward

Import-economic growth nexus in selected African countries: An application of the Toda-Yamamoto Granger non-causality test

We determine the nexus between imports and economic growth for a sample of 26 African countries for the period 1990-2015 within the neoclassical production function framework. We mainly contribute to literature by overcoming the weak theoretical modelling framework and possible model specification bias in most extant studies. Using the Toda-Yamamoto Granger non-causality test, the empirical results indicate that there is absence of causality between imports and economic growth in more than half of the countries in the sample, thus suggesting that neutrality hypothesis is predominant among the countries. We provide ample evidence that causality is absent from imports to economic growth. However, our results should be treated with caution because the absence of causality from imports to economic growth should not imply that imports do not play a role in the growth process of an economy

Exploring the Potentials of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) for Zero-waste Construction in Akure Nigeria

Construction and demolition wastes (CDW) pose serious challenges to the environment and as such creates so much concern in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. The challenges and impacts of construction in AEC activities are obviously avoidable. Practitioners in the industry have been slow to recognize that modern methods of construction (MMC) such as the use of Industrialized Building System (IBS) have the potentials to minimize wastes on job sites compared to the traditional methods of construction which are pointedly wasteful. This study reports a survey conducted in two residential estates where Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) – an Industrialized Building System (IBS) and conventional building materials and techniques were used. Stratified random sampling was adopted because of the different types of housing units within the two selected housing estates. It was found that the Industrial prefabrication of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) wall panels, floor ribs, blocks and fascias enables components to be produced to exact specification thus significantly reducing waste on job sites. Also, the light weight nature of EPS facilitates easier handling and reduces labour and saves time for the installation. The study therefore seeks for the adoption of prefabricated building components such as standardized EPS as a modern methods of construction (MMC) in Nigeria
