An Experimental Realization of Quantum-vacuum Geometric Phases by Using the Gyrotropic-medium Optical Fiber
The connection between the quantum-vacuum geometric phases (which originates
from the vacuum zero-point electromagnetic fluctuation) and the non-normal
product procedure is considered in the present Letter. In order to investigate
this physically interesting geometric phases at quantum-vacuum level, we
suggest an experimentally feasible scheme to test it by means of a
noncoplanarly curved fiber made of gyrotropic media. A remarkable feature of
the present experimental realization is that one can easily extract the
nonvanishing and nontrivial quantum-vacuum geometric phases of left- and/or
right- handed circularly polarized light from the vanishing and trivial total

Ion irradiation in liquid of μm3 region for cell surgery
We present here a cell surgery scheme involving selective inactivation or disruption of cellular structures. Energetic ions are injected into a cell through a tapered glass capillary like a microinjection method. A slight but essential difference from microinjection is that a thin window is prepared at the outlet so that no liquid material can flow in or back through the outlet while still allowing energetic ions to penetrate into the cell. An ∼ MeV He ion beam from such a capillary having 10 μm outlet diameter inactivated a selected volume ( ∼ μm3) of fluorescent molecules located in a HeLa cell nucleus

Microencapsulates and extracts from red beetroot pomace modify antioxidant capacity, heat damage and colour of pseudocerals-enriched einkorn water biscuits
Cereals supply humankind with carbohydrates, proteins and several health-enhancing compounds, including antioxidants. Pomace, a by-product of beetroot juice preparation, is rich in antioxidants (phenolic compounds and betalains). The aim of this work was to study the effect of pomace extract addition, either pure or microencapsulated, on antioxidant properties, heat damage and colour of einkorn water biscuits enriched with pseudocereals. Pomace extract addition had different effects on total polyphenol contents and antioxidant capacity (FRAP and ABTS) in diverse blends. In bread, wheat and einkorn matrices, a significant increase was observed, while in pseudocereals-enriched blends, richer in antioxidants, only microencapsulation improved their content. Pomace extract addition led to furosine reduction and hydroxymethylfurfural increase. Microencapsulate-enriched WB were richest in betanin, isobetanin, total phenolics and antioxidant capacity. In conclusion, pomace extracts, by-products of juice manufacturing, significantly improve some nutritional characteristics of baked products, especially when conveyed as microencapsulates
Reactions of Plasmodium falciparum Ferredoxin:NADP(+) Oxidoreductase with Redox Cycling Xenobiotics: A Mechanistic Study
Ferredoxin:NADP+ oxidoreductase from Plasmodium falciparum (PfFNR) catalyzes the NADPH-dependent reduction of ferredoxin (PfFd), which provides redox equivalents for the biosynthesis of isoprenoids and fatty acids in the apicoplast. Like other flavin-dependent electrontransferases, PfFNR is a potential source of free radicals of quinones and other redox cycling compounds. We report here a kinetic study of the reduction of quinones, nitroaromatic compounds and aromatic N-oxides by PfFNR. We show that all these groups of compounds are reduced in a single-electron pathway, their reactivity increasing with the increase in their single-electron reduction midpoint potential (E17). The reactivity of nitroaromatics is lower than that of quinones and aromatic N-oxides, which is in line with the differences in their electron self-exchange rate constants. Quinone reduction proceeds via a ping-pong mechanism. During the reoxidation of reduced FAD by quinones, the oxidation of FADH. to FAD is the possible rate-limiting step. The calculated electron transfer distances in the reaction of PfFNR with various electron acceptors are similar to those of Anabaena FNR, thus demonstrating their similar "intrinsic" reactivity. Ferredoxin stimulated quinone- and nitro-reductase reactions of PfFNR, evidently providing an additional reduction pathway via reduced PfFd. Based on the available data, PfFNR and possibly PfFd may play a central role in the reductive activation of quinones, nitroaromatics and aromatic N-oxides in P. falciparum, contributing to their antiplasmodial action
