The Auslander conjecture for dimension less than 7
In 1967 L. Auslander conjectured that every crystallographic subgroup of an
affine group is virtually solvable, i.e. contains a solvable subgroup of finite
index. D. Fried and W. Goldman proved Auslander's conjecture for affine space
of dimension 3 using cohomological arguments. Using dynamical arguments we

A Bayesian Periodogram Finds Evidence for Three Planets in 47 Ursae Majoris
A Bayesian analysis of 47 Ursae Majoris (47 UMa) radial velocity data
confirms and refines the properties of two previously reported planets with
periods of 1079 and 2325 days and finds evidence for an additional long period
planet with a period of approximately 10000 days. The three planet model is
found to be 10^5 times more probable than the next most probable model which is
a two planet model. The nonlinear model fitting is accomplished with a new
hybrid Markov chain Monte Carlo (HMCMC) algorithm which incorporates parallel
tempering, simulated annealing and genetic crossover operations. Each of these
features facilitate the detection of a global minimum in chi-squared. By
combining all three, the HMCMC greatly increases the probability of realizing
this goal. When applied to the Kepler problem it acts as a powerful
multi-planet Kepler periodogram. The measured periods are 1078 \pm 2,
2391{+100}{-87}, and 14002{+4018}{-5095}d, and the corresponding eccentricities
are 0.032 \pm 0.014, 0.098{+.047}{-.096}, and 0.16{+.09}{-.16}. The results
favor low eccentricity orbits for all three. Assuming the three signals (each
one consistent with a Keplerian orbit) are caused by planets, the corresponding
limits on planetary mass (M sin i) and semi-major axis are (2.53{+.07}{-.06}MJ,
2.10\pm0.02au), (0.54\pm0.07MJ, 3.6\pm0.1au), and (1.6{+0.3}{-0.5}MJ,
11.6{+2.1}{-2.9}au), respectively. We have also characterized a noise induced
eccentricity bias and designed a correction filter that can be used as an
alternate prior for eccentricity, to enhance the detection of planetary orbits
of low or moderate eccentricity
The beginnings of geography teaching and research in the University of Glasgow: the impact of J.W. Gregory
J.W. Gregory arrived in Glasgow from Melbourne in 1904 to take up the post of foundation Professor of Geology in the University of Glasgow. Soon after his arrival in Glasgow he began to push for the setting up of teaching in Geography in Glasgow, which came to pass in 1909 with the appointment of a Lecturer in Geography. This lecturer was based in the Department of Geology in the University's East Quad. Gregory's active promotion of Geography in the University was matched by his extensive writing in the area, in textbooks, journal articles and popular books. His prodigious output across a wide range of subject areas is variably accepted today, with much of his geomorphological work being judged as misguided to varying degrees. His 'social science' publications - in the areas of race, migration, colonisation and economic development of Africa and Australia - espouse a viewpoint that is unacceptable in the twenty-first century. Nonetheless, that viewpoint sits squarely within the social and economic traditions of Gregory's era, and he was clearly a key 'Establishment' figure in natural and social sciences research in the first half of the twentieth century. Beyond the Circle of Life
It seems certain to me that I will die and stay dead. By “I”, I mean me, Greg Nixon, this person, this self-identity. I am so intertwined with the chiasmus of lives, bodies, ecosystems, symbolic intersubjectivity, and life on this particular planet that I cannot imagine this identity continuing alone without them. However, one may survive one’s life by believing in universal awareness, perfection, and the peace that passes all understanding. Perhaps, we bring this back with us to the Source from which we began, changing it, enriching it. Once we have lived – if we don’t choose the eternal silence of oblivion by life denial, vanity, indifference, or simple weariness – the Source learns and we awaken within it. Awareness, consciousness, is universal – it comes with the territory – so maybe you will be one of the few prepared to become unexpectedly enlightened after the loss of body and self. You may discover your own apotheosis – something you always were, but after a lifetime of primate experience, now much more. Since you are of the Source and since you have changed from life experience and yet retained the dream of ultimate awakening, plus you have brought those chaotic emotions and memories back to the Source with you (though no longer yours), your life & memories will have mattered. Those who awaken beyond the death of self will have changed Reality
