Contribution to the studies of Bohemian mesolithic: example of catastral territory of Upper and Lower Sloupnice
This work is concerned with processing of lithic collection, which was found during a surface survey in the Sloupnice region. First, the thesis describes the methods used therein, second comes a description of the contemporary natural surroundings of the site and third, a summary of principal knowledge about Czech mesolith is provided. This sets the context for analysis of the collection itself. The goal of this work is, first of all, to analyse the lithic collection, which originally counted approximately 10 000 pieces. The portion of the work that describes the collection, the most numerous concentrations are characterised, with regards to their position in the landscape and the number of pieces found. Chipped stone is classified into a number of categories, based on the technology of its production. A detailed classification of retouched pieces and nucleus is also given. The analysis of the raw materials and other characteristics (presence of bark, overburning of pieces, patination and obvious aeolian effects are noted) follows. Finally, the collection is compared to other collections, particularly with the collection from Sopotnice. The work closes with a reflection about the contribution of collections like the one studied to our knowledge about life of the past populations and their contribution to...Institute of ArchaeologyÚstav pro archeologiiFaculty of ArtsFilozofická fakult

Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia
ČULÁKOVÁ, KATARÍNA. Contribution to the Study of the Mesolithic Settlement in Bohemia. Prague: Faculty of Arts, Charles University, 2015, 742 p. (including appendices and plates), PhD. thesis. This thesis wants to present lithic collections. Part of them come from an Eastern Bohemian region and part of them from the Bohemian Forest region. Firstly there is a description of how the collections were obtained. Most of the material comes from a surface survey, a smaller part comes from test pitting. A majority of the collections wasn't previously published and was processed for the purpose of this thesis, part of the information was obtained from published articles. This thesis presents a collection of 25 000 lithic pieces from Eastern Bohemia and 3 500 lithic pieces from the Bohemian Forest. At first there are the most numerous sites described according to their position in the landscape and composition of the lithic collection. Then there is a whole collection characterised according to the used raw material, typology and used technology. This information is incorporated into the wider frame of Central European mesolithics. One of the most interesting features of the collection is the variability of raw materials, which is especially high in the Eastern Bohemian region. From the technological point..
Contribution to the Studies of the Adapatation Strategies of the Hunter-Gatherer Communities in the Late Paleolith and Mesolith
This work is concerned with changes in settlement strategy of the hunther-gatherer communities throughout late paleolith and mesolith. The aim of the thesis is to present the changes of settlement strategy in the relation to the sharp changes in natural environment at the turn of the pleistocene and holocene period. The thesis examines this issue in a wider context of Bohemia, whereas particular locations of the sites are illustrated on the example of Sloupnice region. In the region of Eastern Bohemia, we can verify through observation our postulate that the mesolithic locations had changed significantly, in comparison to late paleolithic, because usually the sites with late paleolithic settlement show no signs of mesolithics settlement (exceptions notwithstanding). The thesis presents a base for creation of a predictive model of appearance of preneolithic settlement, using a Geographic Information Systems. The work also includes phenomenological observation of the landscape, enhancing our insight about hunther-gatherer landscape. As an example of possible public presentation of this research, the final chapter describes a proposal of a footpath with informational boards on the topic of this thesis

Výzkum lokality Sfinga (SBK. W-60) v pohoří Sabaloka v centrálním Súdánu: poznatky z výzkumné sezóny 2015 // Exploration of the site of Sphinx (SBK.W-60) at Jebel Sabaloka in centraI Sudan: findings of the 2015 field campaign
ln November 2015, the expedition directed by the Czech
Institute of Egyptology carried out its fourth excavation
campaign at Jebel Sabaloka (West Bank). Efforts were
devoted to further exploration of the site of Sphinx
(SBK.W-60) in the area of the "Rocky Cities" where
a large late prehistoric burial ground, tentatively dated to
the 8th millennium cal. BC, had been uncovered in 2012.
Altogether 5 trenches, with the square area of 17 m2 in
total and with their depths equating to as much as 1 m,
were excavated to explore another section of the burial
ground and to investigate the settlement stratigraphies in
the southern and central parts of the site. Alongside the
excavation, selected categories of finds (lithics, ground
slone artefacts, animal bones) were analysed and documented.
Also, further detailed surface survey and documentation
of varied features at the site were performed
in order to gather additional data necessary for the preparation
of the first detailed report on this remarkable site.
Lasl but not least, special measures were taken to protec!
the study area from damage by both illegal excavation
and gravel quarrying
