This is a commemorative essay written for Prof. Berin U. Yurdadoğ who died on June 10, 2019. The death of Prof. Yurdadoğ, retired faculty member of Ankara University and a part-time academic member of Hacettepe University, has been one of the devastating loss for the academic community, colleagues and students in the field of information management. She was a respected academician, a thoughtful supervisor and beloved instructor. We will surely miss the presence of our truly dear Berin Hoca. Bilgi Profesyonellerinin Eğitiminde 40 Yıl: Hacettepe Üniversitesinin Lisans Programındaki Değişiklikler

There have been many changes in the undergraduate programs of the Department of Information Management, Hacettepe University, since its foundation 40 years ago. Some of these changes are wide in scope, and some are narrow. The aim of this study is to find answers to the questions such as when, why, and how these “wide in scope” changes in the undergraduate programs have been implemented. The differences between the programs seem to be the by-product of changes in technological developments, professional understanding and the particular cha- racterisitics of the country.Hacettepe Üniversitesi Bilgi ve Belge Yönetimi Bölümünün kuruluşundan bu yana geçen 40 yıllık sürede lisans programında birçok kez değişiklikler yapılmıştır. Bu değişikliklerin bazıları dar, bazıları da son derece kapsamlıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, programlardaki kapsamlı değişikliklerin ne zaman, niçin ve nasıl gerçek­leştirildiklerini uygulandıkları dönemler itibariyle incelemektir. Lisans program­ları arasında gözlenen anlamlı farklılıklar kısmen bilgi teknolojilerindeki geliş­melerden, kısmen mesleki anlayış farklılığından, kısmen de ülkenin kendine özgü koşullarından kaynaklanmaktadır

Education of qualified manpower to undertake professional duties in the information centers in Turkey is almost as old as the foundation of the Republic. Türk Kütüphaneciliğinin Sorunları ve Çözüm Önerileri

Report presented to the Librarianship, Documentation and Archives Committee of the UNESCO Turkish National Commission, identifies environmental factors, the notion of library and librarianship in the society, and the low profile of librarians as main sources of problems. The society still sees the librarian as the protector of books. The value given to the profession is, thus, limited to such a narrow understanding of the profession, which leads to low payment and insufficient resource allocation to the libraries. Main field of activity, that is, the pro\ision of information is expected from documentation and information centres. Library and information work cannot be separated from each other. The proposals for solution of the problems include improvement of professional education, legal provisions, and reorganiztion of professional organizations.Raporda, çevresel öğeler, toplumda kütüphane ve kütüphaneci anlayışı, kütüphanecilerin statüleri, sorunların belli başlı kaynakları olarak belirlenmiştir. Toplum kütüphaneciyi hala kitapların koruyucusu olarak görmektedir. Dolayısıyla kütüphaneciye verilen değer, ödenen ücret, kütüphanelere ayrılan tahsisatlar da bu anlayışın sınırları içinde kalmaktadır. Öte yandan temel işlev olan bilgi sağlama ise dokümantasyon ve enformasyon merkezlerinden ¡^eklenmektedir. Kütüphane ve bilgi hizmetleri birbirinden ayrı düşünülemez. Sorunların çözümlenmesi için, lisans, lisans üstü ve kurum içi eğitim alanlarında düzeltmeler yapılması, yasa, tüzük, yönetmelik ve benzeri yasal düzenlemelerin incelenerek gerekli değişiklerin yapılması ve mesleki derneklerin yapılarının ve etkinlik alanlarının gözden geçirilmesi önerilmiştir

The existing developments in information technology have led to enormous changes concerning the entire humanity. A similar transformation took place in Europe soon after the invention of Gutenberg’s printing press in the second half of the 15th century, and almost every aspect of social life was affected to a great extent. Turkey has been suffering the plight of a-two hundred and seventy fıve year delay at the printing press, which had considerable impacts on carrying Europe to the Industrialization through the Enlightenment and thus leading it to its position at present. In this study, while the outcomes of this delay are dealt with regarding the events took place after the printing press in Europe, it is also emphasized that the misguidance of the past be understood in earnest in order to reach a bright future
