    House dusts of a volcanic island: potential impacts on human health

    ABSTRACT: Fogo island (Cape Verde), has an active volcano that last erupted in 2014-15, with melts mainly alkaline, of basanitic to tephritic composition. Dwellings dust composition is the result of natural and anthropogenic interactions. Nineteen house dusts were collected, in representative dwellings all over the island. Fractions 50 µm in diameter, suggesting that bioaccessible fraction might not be high, thus, reducing risk.N/

    ABSTRACT: Fogo (Fogo Island) is the youngest and most active volcano of Cape Verde. The last eruption occurred in 2014-2015. Aiming to assess the dust sources that impacted the air quality during the present study period, fresh lava samples were collected, while Saharan dust intrusions and transport were modeled. Rooftop dust was also collected on the island dwellings and a mineralogical and chemical characterization was undertaken. Air quality monitors were used to obtain concentrations of atmospheric particulate matter (PM) and gaseous pollutants. The mineralogical constitution was assessed by XRD and Electron Microprobe. The pseudototal chemical concentration was performed by XRF, ICP-MS and SEM; the latter includes particles morphology. During the study, WRF-CHIMERE results showed the intrusion of desert dust which affected the air quality. Lava was classified as tephritic to basanitic, with high potassium content. The Pollution Load Index for rooftop dust was > 1 in all samples, suggesting an enrichment. Higher values were found in dust size fraction Pb > Co. Ingestion was the main exposure route. PM10 concentrations exceeded the 24-h mean of 50 mu g/m(3) recommended by WHO. Nevertheless, TVOCs displayed levels lower than guidelines.     A qualidade das evidências e as recomendações sobre a incorporação de medicamentos no sistema único de saúde:: uma análise retrospectiva

    Os processos de gestão e incorporação de tecnologias ao Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) são amparados por conhecimentos específicos da área de Avaliação de Tecnologias em Saúde (ATS). O objetivo desse estudo foi estimar os fatores associados à qualidade das evidências e sua relação com as recomendações sobre a incorporação de medicamentos emitidas pela Comissão Nacional de Incorporação de Tecnologias no SUS (Conitec). Para tanto, foram avaliadas, por meio de modelos estatísticos bivariados e de regressão logística, a associação entre potenciais preditores da qualidade das evidências constantes nos relatórios, assim como sua relação com as recomendações emitidas pela comissão no período de 2012 a 2015. As análises bivariadas sugeriram a indicação em doença rara, a origem externa da demanda e o ano do relatório como  potenciais preditores da baixa qualidade das evidências. No modelo ajustado pelo impacto orçamentário e ano da recomendação, a qualidade baixa das evidências demonstrou uma chance de cerca de quatro vezes maior de receber uma recomendação não favorável pela Conitec (ORajustado: 4,33; IC95%: 1,26 a 14,93, p < 0,05). Os resultados demonstram a importância e consistência da avaliação da qualidade das evidências nas recomendações sobre incorporação de medicamentos no SUS

    Staging Parkinson’s Disease According to the MNCD (Motor/Non-motor/Cognition/Dependency) Classification Correlates with Disease Severity and Quality of Life

    Background: Recently, a novel simple classification called MNCD, based on 4 axes (Motor; Non-motor; Cognition; Dependency) and 5 stages, has been proposed to classify Parkinson's disease (PD). Objective: Our aim was to apply the MNCD classification in a cohort of PD patients for the first time and also to analyze the correlation with quality of life (QoL) and disease severity. Methods: Data from the baseline visit of PD patients recruited from 35 centers in Spain from the COPPADIS cohort from January 2016 to November 2017 were used to apply the MNCD classification. Three instruments were used to assess QoL: 1) the 39-item Parkinson's disease Questionnaire [PDQ-39]); PQ-10; the EUROHIS-QOL 8-item index (EUROHIS-QOL8). Results: Four hundred and thirty-nine PD patients (62.05 +/- 7.84 years old; 59% males) were included. MNCD stage was: stage 1, 8.4% (N = 37); stage 2, 62% (N = 272); stage 3, 28.2% (N = 124); stage 4-5, 1.4% (N = 6). A more advanced MNCD stage was associated with a higher score on the PDQ39SI (p < 0.0001) and a lower score on the PQ-10 (p < 0.0001) and EUROHIS-QOL8 (p < 0.0001). In many other aspects of the disease, such as disease duration, levodopa equivalent daily dose, motor symptoms, non-motor symptoms, and autonomy for activities of daily living, an association between the stage and severity was observed, with data indicating a progressive worsening related to disease progression throughout the proposed stages. Conclusion: Staging PD according to the MNCD classification correlated with QoL and disease severity. The MNCD could be a proper tool to monitor the progression of PD

    El V Congreso Internacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación para la Sociedad, CITIS 2019, realizado del 6 al 8 de febrero de 2019 y organizado por la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, ofreció a la comunidad académica nacional e internacional una plataforma de comunicación unificada, dirigida a cubrir los problemas teóricos y prácticos de mayor impacto en la sociedad moderna desde la ingeniería. En esta edición, dedicada a los 25 años de vida de la UPS, los ejes temáticos estuvieron relacionados con la aplicación de la ciencia, el desarrollo tecnológico y la innovación en cinco pilares fundamentales de nuestra sociedad: la industria, la movilidad, la sostenibilidad ambiental, la información y las telecomunicaciones. El comité científico estuvo conformado formado por 48 investigadores procedentes de diez países: España, Reino Unido, Italia, Bélgica, México, Venezuela, Colombia, Brasil, Estados Unidos y Ecuador. Fueron recibidas un centenar de contribuciones, de las cuales 39 fueron aprobadas en forma de ponencias y 15 en formato poster. Estas contribuciones fueron presentadas de forma oral ante toda la comunidad académica que se dio cita en el Congreso, quienes desde el aula magna, el auditorio y la sala de usos múltiples de la Universidad Politécnica Salesiana, cumplieron respetuosamente la responsabilidad de representar a toda la sociedad en la revisión, aceptación y validación del conocimiento nuevo que fue presentado en cada exposición por los investigadores. Paralelo a las sesiones técnicas, el Congreso contó con espacios de presentación de posters científicos y cinco workshops en temáticas de vanguardia que cautivaron la atención de nuestros docentes y estudiantes. También en el marco del evento se impartieron un total de ocho conferencias magistrales en temas tan actuales como la gestión del conocimiento en la universidad-ecosistema, los retos y oportunidades de la industria 4.0, los avances de la investigación básica y aplicada en mecatrónica para el estudio de robots de nueva generación, la optimización en ingeniería con técnicas multi-objetivo, el desarrollo de las redes avanzadas en Latinoamérica y los mundos, la contaminación del aire debido al tránsito vehicular, el radón y los riesgos que representa este gas radiactivo para la salud humana, entre otros

    Trabajo presentado en: R-Evolucionando el transporte, XIV Congreso de Ingeniería del Transporte (CIT 2021), realizado en modalidad online los días 6, 7 y 8 de julio de 2021, organizado por la Universidad de BurgosIn the framework of road infrastructures, CHM has led a study that investigates construction products in order to combat the heat that is accumulated and released by urban surfaces, such as asphalt, especially in summer, seeking to minimize the "island of urban heat". This project is the result of having developed reflective pavements (cool pavements) than have passed through the first phase at the laboratory level, manufacturing on an industrial scale and their small-scale testing to ensure proper implementation, as well as their implementation by means of a large-scale demonstrator, operating on 24.000 m2 of pavement in the city of Murcia (LIFE HEATLAND). This mixture has a series of benefits with respect to conventional mixtures, leading to an improvement in the urban environment and quality of life of the citizens of the implantation environment and which are mainly: - Saving energy in air conditioning and in the consumption of public lighting. - Saving energy consumption and raw materials. - Improves air quality. - Improves noise pollution. - Improves comfort and health of pedestrians. - Economic and environmental benefits.     Potentially toxic elements dynamics in the soil rhizospheric-plant system in the active volcano of Fogo (Cape Verde) and interactions with human health

    ABSTRACT: Volcanic eruptions disturb directly and indirectly the ecosystems. Direct impact occurs on the soil-plant system with an input of new elements and indirect hazard occurs by consumption of these plants. Fogo island (Cape Verde Republic) has an active volcano and the last eruption occurred in 2014-15, expelling large amounts of materials that spread all over the island. Soils and edible plants were collected all over the island. Pollution indexes reveal contamination in all samples, mostly due to Hg and Ni and with moderate contribution of Co, Cr, Cu and Pb. Mercury is the PTE with higher contribution to the non-carcinogenic hazard quotient, both by soil ingestion and inhalation. Carcinogenic risk exceeds the target risk in all samples with the higher contribution of Ni. Transfer factor from soils to plants decreasing order is Mn > As > Zn > Cr > Cu > Cd > Pb > Ni > Co > Hg, being 1 point to a significant accumulation of elements in edible plants). The hazard risk index and targeted hazard quotient shows that potential negative health outcomes can be induced by As, Cr, Cu, and Zn by consumption of edible plants.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
