Objectives: to investigate the association between malnutrition and physical performance in nursing home residents. Design: cross sectional study. Setting and Participants: a total of 499 older people (73.1% women) enrolled in the Incidence of pNeumonia and related ConseqUences in nursing home Residents (INCUR) cohort study. Methods: the nutritional status was defined using the Mini Nutritional Assessment\u2013Short Form (MNA-SF), whereas the physical performance was measured with the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Unadjusted and adjusted (for age, sex, education, Abbreviated Mental Test score and Charlson Comorbidy Index) linear regression analyses were used to assess the association between MNA-SF and SPPB (primary outcome). The MNA-SF items which seemed most strongly related to the SPPB (and its subtasks) were also explored. Finally, we explored the association of the MNA-SF with each subtest of the SPPB. Results: the mean age of the sample was 85.80 (standard deviation, SD 7.20). The mean SPPB score was 3.05 (SD 2.65) and the mean MNA-SF score 10.35 (SD 2.22). Higher scores of MNA-SF were associated with better physical performance. Food intake deficiency, mobility impairment, and recent psychological stress or acute disease were the items of the MNA-SF most strongly associated with the SPPB, even after adjustment for potential confounders. Among the three subtests of the SPPB, the MNA-SF showed the strongest and most consistent association with the gait speed. Conclusions and Implications: among nursing home residents, the MNA-SF and three of its sub-items (food intake deficiency, mobility impairment, and recent psychological stress) are significantly correlated with physical performance, independently of potential confounders. In particular, the association was evident for the gait speed subtask of the SPPB

Cuculí formation sandstones (Miocene, San Juan precordillera): magnetic fabric controls

A preliminary study of magnetic fabric and petrofabric in sandstones from the Cuculí Formation (Miocene) was carried out in two localities from the Precordillera of San Juan and the results were compared with studies based on kinematic data obtained by other authors in the same localities. The study of the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) shows triaxial ellipsoids with very low degrees of anisotropy. Due to the lack of macro– or microscopic evidences of strain, it is interpreted that the AMS ellipsoids represent incipient composite magnetic fabrics, whose development is significantly influenced by the sedimentary fabric.Fil: Oriolo, Sebastián. Ten new species of Exocelina Broun, 1886 from New Guinea are described: E. andakombensis sp. n., E. garaina sp. n., E. injiensis sp. n., E. kabwumensis sp. n., E. marawaga sp. n., E. posmani sp. n., E. tekadu sp. n., E. varirata sp. n., E. wareaga sp. n., and E. woitapensis sp. n. All of them together with five already described species are united into the newly defined E. danae-group (with E. miriae-subgroup), a polyphyletic complex of related species with lateral setation on the median lobe. In the light of newly available material, all previously described species of the E. rivulus-group are considered to belong to a single species, E. damantiensis (Balke, 1998), which is now placed into the E. danae-group, and three new synonyms are therefore proposed: E. madangensis (Balke, 2001) syn. n., E. patepensis (Balke, 1998) syn. n., and E. rivulus (Balke, 1998) syn. n. Exocelina tarmluensis (Balke, 1998) syn. n. is a junior synonym of E. danae (Balke, 1998). Redescription of E. atratus (Balfour-Browne, 1939) is provided based on its type material. An identification key to all known species of the group is provided, and important diagnostic characters are illustrated. Data on the species distribution are given, showing that whilst most species are local endemics, E. damantiensis is extremely widely distributed

Negative Self-Care Behaviours Among Diabetic Patients Bukittinggi, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic multifactorial endocrine disorder that affects approximately 5-10% of adults worldwide. In Indonesia, approximately 10.8 million people, which accounts for 10% of the population, suffer from diabetes. The current treatment considered suitable for diabetes management involves self-care management. Self-management plays a crucial role in achieving blood sugar control, reducing complications, improving quality of life, and lowering hospitalization rates. Negative self-care behaviors frequently observed among diabetes patients include consuming high-fat foods, sugary snacks, non-adherence to diabetes diet protocols. These unhealthy habits make it more difficult to regulate one\u27s own health, which increases the risk of morbidity and death, uncontrolled blood sugar levels, and a decline in quality of life. The purpose of this study is to identify poor self-care practices among type 2 diabetes patients in the Bukittinggi health facilities\u27 service region. Using a deliberate sample technique, a qualitative descriptive study was carried out in seven operational regions of the community health clinics in Bukittinggi, Indonesia. Participants were interviewed in semi-structured interviews, and a chollezi was used to analyze the data. There were 15 people in all, ages 30 to 69, who participated in this study. The participants had been diagnosed with diabetes for a duration of 2 to 21 years. The study identified four themes: unhealthy dietary behaviors, poor medication adherence, preference of unstandardized based herbal medicine, and surrender to Diabetic. Future research should focus on developing appropriate interventions and health promotion strategie

    Get PDF
Background: The association between multiple risk factors and the mortality of sarcopenic patients has not been studied. This study's aim is to report the prevalence of sarcopenia among a sample of Italian hospitalized older adults, describe the physical function, body fat composition, cognitive, inflammatory and nutritional status of sarcopenic compared with non-sarcopenic subjects, and determine the risk factors associated with mortality in sarcopenic patients. Method: A total of 462 patients were enrolled and followed up for a period of 5 years. Sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the EWGSOP2 criteria. Factors associated with sarcopenia were identified with linear regression analysis. Logistic regression was applied to explore the association between the risk factors and mortality in sarcopenic subjects. Survival analyses and predictors of mortality were identified using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression. Results: The prevalence of sarcopenia was 33.5%. Linear regression showed that sarcopenia was associated with Barthel index (B −9.63, p0.004), BMI (B −3.19, p24.9 (HR 0.287 C95% 0.095–0.866 p 0.027). Conclusion: Sarcopenia is associated with low physical function and BMI but higher android fat. Low Barthel, BMI and albumin can significantly decrease the survival rate in sarcopenic patients. Whereas BMI >24.9 is associated with lower mortality hazard
