Definable equivalence relations and zeta functions of groups

We prove that the theory of the pp-adics Qp{\mathbb Q}_p admits elimination of imaginaries provided we add a sort for GLn(Qp)/GLn(Zp){\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Q}_p)/{\rm GL}_n({\mathbb Z}_p) for each nn. We also prove that the elimination of imaginaries is uniform in pp. Using pp-adic and motivic integration, we deduce the uniform rationality of certain formal zeta functions arising from definable equivalence relations. This also yields analogous results for definable equivalence relations over local fields of positive characteristic. The appendix contains an alternative proof, using cell decomposition, of the rationality (for fixed pp) of these formal zeta functions that extends to the subanalytic context. As an application, we prove rationality and uniformity results for zeta functions obtained by counting twist isomorphism classes of irreducible representations of finitely generated nilpotent groups; these are analogous to similar results of Grunewald, Segal and Smith and of du Sautoy and Grunewald for subgroup zeta functions of finitely generated nilpotent groups.Comment: 89 pages. A generalization of the Artin-Tate formula for fourfolds

We give a new formula for the special value at s=2 of the Hasse-Weil zeta function for smooth projective fourfolds under some assumptions (the Tate and Beilinson conjecture, finiteness of some cohomology groups, etc.). Our formula may be considered as a generalization of the Artin-Tate(-Milne) formula for smooth surfaces, and expresses the special zeta value almost exclusively in terms of inner geometric invariants such as higher Chow groups (motivic cohomology groups). Moreover we compare our formula with Geisser's formula for the same zeta value in terms of Weil-\'etale motivic cohomology groups, and as a consequence (under additional assumptions) we obtain some presentations of weight two Weil-\'etale motivic cohomology groups in terms of higher Chow groups and unramified cohomology groups.Comment: 18 page

This text is written for the volume of the school/conference "Noncommutative Geometry 2005" held at IPM Tehran. It gives a survey of methods and results in noncommutative geometry, based on a discussion of significant examples of noncommutative spaces in geometry, number theory, and physics. The paper also contains an outline (the ``Tehran program'') of ongoing joint work with Consani on the noncommutative geometry of the adeles class space and its relation to number theoretic questions.Comment: 106 pages, LaTeX, 23 figure

    Noncommutative Geometry and Arithmetic

This is an overview of recent results aimed at developing a geometry of noncommutative tori with real multiplication, with the purpose of providing a parallel, for real quadratic fields, of the classical theory of elliptic curves with complex multiplication for imaginary quadratic fields. This talk concentrates on two main aspects: the relation of Stark numbers to the geometry of noncommutative tori with real multiplication, and the shadows of modular forms on the noncommutative boundary of modular curves, that is, the moduli space of noncommutative tori.
