Zero-voltage ride-through capability of single-phase grid-connected photovoltaic systems
Distributed renewable energy systems play an increasing role in today’s energy paradigm. Thus, intensive research activities have been centered on improving the performance of renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic (PV) systems, which should be of multiple-functionality. That is, the PV systems should be more intelligent in the consideration of grid stability, reliability, and fault protection. Therefore, in this paper, the performance of single-phase grid-connected PV systems under an extreme grid fault (i.e., when the grid voltage dips to zero) is explored. It has been revealed that combining a fast and accurate synchronization mechanism with appropriate control strategies for the zero-voltage ride-through (ZVRT) operation is mandatory. Accordingly, the representative synchronization techniques (i.e., the phase-locked loop (PLL) methods) in the ZVRT operation are compared in terms of detection precision and dynamic response. It shows that the second-order generalized integrator (SOGI-PLL) is a promising solution for single-phase systems in the case of fault ride-through. A control strategy by modifying the SOGI-PLL scheme is then introduced to single-phase grid-connected PV systems for ZVRT operation. Simulations are performed to verify the discussions. The results have demonstrated that the proposed method can help single-phase PV systems to temporarily ride through zero-voltage faults with good dynamics
A 1-bit Synchronization Algorithm for a Reduced Complexity Energy Detection UWB Receiver
This work investigates the possibility of performing synchronization in a reduced complexity Energy Detection receiver. A new receiver scheme employing a single comparator only is defined and the related synchronization algorithm is presented. The possibility of synchronizing has been analyzed both for an idealized Dirac Delta input signal and for realistic UWB signals obtained through the TG4a channel model. The matlab simulations show that it is possible to obtain coarse synchronization using a simple maximum detection algorithm computed on collected energies for the ideal case of Dirac Delta pulses. For realistic UWB signals better synchronization performances are possible by employing a searchback algorithm. Due to the low complexity of the receiver scheme, the synchronization algorithm requires a long locking time
Effect of disorder and noise in shaping the dynamics of power grids
The aim of this paper is to investigate complex dynamic networks which can
model high-voltage power grids with renewable, fluctuating energy sources. For
this purpose we use the Kuramoto model with inertia to model the network of
power plants and consumers. In particular, we analyse the synchronization
transition of networks of phase oscillators with inertia (rotators) whose
natural frequencies are bimodally distributed, corresponding to the
distribution of generator and consumer power. First, we start from globally
coupled networks whose links are successively diluted, resulting in a random
Erd\"os-Renyi network. We focus on the changes in the hysteretic loop while
varying inertial mass and dilution. Second, we implement Gaussian white noise
describing the randomly fluctuating input power, and investigate its role in
shaping the dynamics. Finally, we briefly discuss power grid networks under the
impact of both topological disorder and external noise sources.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Energy-Efficient Power Control for Contention-Based Synchronization in OFDMA Systems with Discrete Powers and Limited Feedback
This work derives a distributed and iterative algorithm by which mobile
terminals can selfishly control their transmit powers during the
synchronization procedure specified by the IEEE 802.16m and the 3GPP-LTE
standards for orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access technologies. The
proposed solution aims at maximizing the energy efficiency of the network and
is derived on the basis of a finite noncooperative game in which the players
have discrete action sets of transmit powers. The set of Nash equilibria of the
game is investigated, and a distributed power control algorithm is proposed to
achieve synchronization in an energy-efficient manner under the assumption that
the feedback from the base station is limited. Numerical results show that the
proposed solution improves the energy efficiency as well as the timing
estimation accuracy of the network compared to existing alternatives, while
requiring a reasonable amount of information to be exchanged on the return
channel
Synchnonization, zero-resistance states and rotating Wigner crystal
We show that rotational angles of electrons moving in two dimensions (2D) in
a perpendicular magnetic field can be synchronized by an external microwave
field which frequency is close to the Larmor frequency. The synchronization
eliminates collisions between electrons and thus creates a regime with zero
diffusion corresponding to the zero-resistance states observed in experiments
with high mobility 2D electron gas (2DEG). For long range Coulomb interactions
electrons form a rotating hexagonal Wigner crystal. Possible relevance of this
effect for planetary rings is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 4 fig
Associative memory storing an extensive number of patterns based on a network of oscillators with distributed natural frequencies in the presence of external white noise
We study associative memory based on temporal coding in which successful
retrieval is realized as an entrainment in a network of simple phase
oscillators with distributed natural frequencies under the influence of white
noise. The memory patterns are assumed to be given by uniformly distributed
random numbers on so that the patterns encode the phase differences
of the oscillators. To derive the macroscopic order parameter equations for the
network with an extensive number of stored patterns, we introduce the effective
transfer function by assuming the fixed-point equation of the form of the TAP
equation, which describes the time-averaged output as a function of the
effective time-averaged local field. Properties of the networks associated with
synchronization phenomena for a discrete symmetric natural frequency
distribution with three frequency components are studied based on the order
parameter equations, and are shown to be in good agreement with the results of
numerical simulations. Two types of retrieval states are found to occur with
respect to the degree of synchronization, when the size of the width of the
natural frequency distribution is changed.Comment: published in Phys. Rev.
Fast Desynchronization For Decentralized Multichannel Medium Access Control
Distributed desynchronization algorithms are key to wireless sensor networks
as they allow for medium access control in a decentralized manner. In this
paper, we view desynchronization primitives as iterative methods that solve
optimization problems. In particular, by formalizing a well established
desynchronization algorithm as a gradient descent method, we establish novel
upper bounds on the number of iterations required to reach convergence.
Moreover, by using Nesterov's accelerated gradient method, we propose a novel
desynchronization primitive that provides for faster convergence to the steady
state. Importantly, we propose a novel algorithm that leads to decentralized
time-synchronous multichannel TDMA coordination by formulating this task as an
optimization problem. Our simulations and experiments on a densely-connected
IEEE 802.15.4-based wireless sensor network demonstrate that our scheme
provides for faster convergence to the steady state, robustness to hidden
nodes, higher network throughput and comparable power dissipation with respect
to the recently standardized IEEE 802.15.4e-2012 time-synchronized channel
hopping (TSCH) scheme.Comment: to appear in IEEE Transactions on Communication
