Identification of a Disease on Cocoa Caused by Fusariumin Sulawesi
A disease presumed to be caused by Fusarium was observed in cocoa open fields with few or without shade trees. Within the population of cocoa trees in the field, some trees had died, some had yellowing leaves and dieback, and the others were apparently healthy. In order to demonstrate Fusarium species as the causal pathogen and to obtain information concerning the incidence of the disease, its distribution and its impact on sustainability of cocoa, isolation of the pathogen, inoculation of cocoa seedlings with isolates and a survey of disease has been conducted. Fusarium was isolated from roots and branches, and inoculated onto cocoa seedlings (one month old) via soil. Symptoms appeared within 3-4 weeks after infection. These symptoms consisted of yellowing of leaves beginning from the bottom until the leaves falldown, and browning internal of vascular tissue. Darkened vascular traces in the petiole characteristic of vascularstreak dieback infection were absent. The occurrence of Fusarium in the field was characterized by the absence of obvious signs of fungal infestation on root of infected trees, yellowing of leaves on twigs, dieback, and tree mortality in severe infestations. Disease incidence could reach 77% and in this situation it was difficult for trees recover from heavy infections or to be regenerated in the farm. The study proves that Fusarium is a pathogen causing dieback and the disease is called as Fusarium vascular dieback (FVD). Its development is apparently enhanced by dry conditions in the field
General overview of genetic research and experimentation on coconut varieties tolerant/resistant to lethal yellowing
The Lethal Yellowing (LY) disease is one of the main threats to coconut industry in many parts of Africa and the Caribbean. Planting resistant varieties has long been recognized as one of the most promising ways of controlling the disease. Considerable efforts have been devoted throughout the world to screening suitable varieties and have often involved international cooperation. It has proven to be a lengthy and difficult task. We present an overview of these efforts with special mention to Ghana, Jamaica and Mexico. Although no variety so far has been proven fully and permanently resistant, treating resistance level as a threshold trait makes it possible to demonstrate significant differences among varieties, which can be exploited effectively to make genetic improvement a component of an integrated control strategy. Based on past experience, we make a few suggestions to increase the diversity of resistance sources and increase the level and the sustainability of resistance to LY in coconut. (Résumé d'auteur
Molecular and macromolecular structure changes in polyamide 11 during thermal oxidation
The present article reports a study of thermal oxidation of unstabilized polyamide 11 films at several temperatures (90â165 °C) under atmospheric pressure and under various oxygen pressures (up to 1.6 MPa) at 110 °C. The chemical structure changes are monitored by IR spectroscopy (carbonyl groups) and UVâvisible spectrophotometry (yellowing). Molar mass changes are determined by size exclusion chromatography (SEC). By investigating the influence of oxygen pressure it is clearly shown that reactions involving P° radicals other than O2 addition cannot be neglected under atmospheric pressure. Under the conditions of this study limited to relatively low oxidation levels, IR and UV measurements indicate that carbonyl groups and chromophores responsible for yellowing have the same relative yield whatever the temperature and oxygen pressure. SEC measurements highlight the significant predominance of random chain scissions over crosslinking events. Crosslinking only appears after an induction time, presumably because it involves reactions between primary oxidation products. The ratio of carbonyl groups over chain scissions is about 7.5 at low conversion and about 2.5 at high conversion, showing that α amino alkoxy radicals are mainly transformed into imides without chain scission
Cape Saint Paul Wilt Disease of coconut in Ghana: surveillance and management of disease spread
The Cape Saint Paul Wilt Disease (CSPWD), a lethal-yellowing type disease of coconut has been in Ghana since 1932. Aerial and/or ground surveys were undertaken to assess the current status of the disease spread. The survey showed that the spread of the disease for the past 5 years has mainly been the expansion of existing foci. However, new outbreaks were identified at Glidzi in the Volta, Bawjiase and Efutu Breman in Central regions. After the resurgence in the Volta region in 1995, the Woe-Tegbi-Dzelukope corridor has remained endemic, but less aggressive. Pockets of healthy groves remain along all the coastline and inland of known disease zones. Eradication of diseased palms at Ampain focus lying just about 60 km to the Ivorian border, and disease situations on new replanting with MYD à VTT hybrid are discussed. (Résumé d'auteur
