    Les eines computacionals i el disseny de corpus orals: un diàleg vigent

    The design of an oral corpus and the processes of registering, codifying and treating the materials in order to build a useful resource for linguistic analysis prompt numerous decisions regarding theory and methodology. This article is focused on those stages of corpus construction which are more clearly conditioned by the computational processing necessary to make it functional. In order to adequately match the initial expectations and the real possibilities of using the tool, each feature we intend to codify must be measured against the workload and the means required to do so. Therefore, it is essential to take into account the available possibilities of processing and exploitation as they have a crucial impact on decisions regarding the corpus’ construction. Based on experience acquired in the construction of the ESLORA corpus, the present article looks into some of the problems arising in the process of designing an oral corpus, such as the delicacy with which oral phenomena are represented, the segmentation of the discourse, the coexistence of different simultaneous tagging systems and the particularities of annotation in a bilingual or multilingual contextEl disseny d’un corpus oral i els processos de registrar, codificar i tractar els materials per construir un recurs útil per a l’anàlisi lingüística, comporta nombroses decisions pel que fa a la teoria i la metodologia. Aquest article s’ocupa d’aquelles etapes de la construcció d’un corpus que més clarament estan condicionades pel processament informàtic necessari que ha de fer el corpus funcional. Per tal de conjugar les expectatives inicials i les possibilitats reals quan usem l’eina, cada característica que pretenem codificar ha de ser mesurada quant a la càrrega de treball que comporta i els mitjans que són requerits per fer-ho possible. Per això, és essencial tenir en compte els recursos disponibles a l’hora de processar i explotar el corpus, ja que tenen un impacte fonamental en les decisions pel que fa a la construcció del corpus.     Towards LLOD-based language contact studies: a case study in interoperability

    We describe a methodological and technical framework for conducting qualitative and quantitative studies of linguistic research questions over diverse and heterogeneous data sources such as corpora and elicitations. We demonstrate how LLOD formalisms can be employed to develop extraction pipelines for features and linguistic examples from corpora and collections of interlinear glossed text, and furthermore, how SPARQL UPDATE can be employed (1) to normalize diverse data against a reference data model (here, POWLA), (2) to harmonize annotation vocabularies by reference to terminology repositories (here, OLiA), (3) to extract examples from these normalized data structures regardless of their origin, and (4) to implement this extraction routine in a tool-independent manner for different languages with different annotation schemes. We demonstrate our approach for language contact studies for genetically unrelated, but neighboring languages from the Caucasus area, Eastern Armenian and Georgian

    Annotation, exploitation and evaluation of parallel corpora

    Exchange between the translation studies and the computational linguistics communities has traditionally not been very intense. Among other things, this is reflected by the different views on parallel corpora. While computational linguistics does not always strictly pay attention to the translation direction (e.g. when translation rules are extracted from (sub)corpora which actually only consist of translations), translation studies are amongst other things concerned with exactly comparing source and target texts (e.g. to draw conclusions on interference and standardization effects). However, there has recently been more exchange between the two fields – especially when it comes to the annotation of parallel corpora. This special issue brings together the different research perspectives. Its contributions show – from both perspectives – how the communities have come to interact in recent years

    The Meta-data-Database of a Next Generation Sustainability Web-Platform for Language Resources

    Our goal is to provide a web-based platform for the long-term preservation and distribution of a heterogeneous collection of linguistic resources. We discuss the corpus preprocessing and normalisation phase that results in sets of multi-rooted trees. At the same time we transform the original metadata records, just like the corpora annotated using different annotation approaches and exhibiting different levels of granularity, into the all-encompassing and highly flexible format eTEI for which we present editing and parsing tools. We also discuss the architecture of the sustainability platform. Its primary components are an XML database that contains corpus and metadata files and an SQL database that contains user accounts and access control lists. A staging area, whose structure, contents, and consistency can be checked using tools, is used to make sure that new resources about to be imported into the platform have the correct structure

    Compilation and Exploitation of Parallel Corpora

    With more and more text being available in electronic form, it is becoming relatively easy to obtain digital texts together with their translations. The paper presents the processing steps necessary to compile such texts into parallel corpora, an extremely useful language resource. Parallel corpora can be used as a translation aid for second-language learners, for translators and lexicographers, or as a data-source for various language technology tools. We present our work in this direction, which is characterised by the use of open standards for text annotation, the use of publicly available third-party tools and wide availability of the produced resources. Explained is the corpus annotation chain involving normalisation, tokenisation, segmentation, alignment, word-class syntactic tagging, and lemmatisation. Two exploitation results over our annotated corpora are also presented, namely aWeb concordancer and the extraction of bi-lingual lexica

    <tiger2/> - Serialising the ISO SynAF Syntactic Object Model

    International audienceThis paper introduces , an XML format developed to serialise the object model defined by the ISO Syntactic Annotation Framework SynAF. Based on widespread best practices we adapt a popular XML format for syntactic annotation, TigerXML, with additional features to support a variety of syntactic phenomena including constituent and dependency structures, binding, and different node types such as compounds or empty elements. We also define interfaces to other formats and standards including the Morpho-syntactic Annotation Framework MAF and the ISOCat Data Category Registry. Finally a case study of the German Treebank TueBa-D/Z is presented, showcasing the handling of constituent structures, topological fields and coreference annotation in tandem
