    Linear Bounded Composition of Tree-Walking Tree Transducers: Linear Size Increase and Complexity

    Compositions of tree-walking tree transducers form a hierarchy with respect to the number of transducers in the composition. As main technical result it is proved that any such composition can be realized as a linear bounded composition, which means that the sizes of the intermediate results can be chosen to be at most linear in the size of the output tree. This has consequences for the expressiveness and complexity of the translations in the hierarchy. First, if the computed translation is a function of linear size increase, i.e., the size of the output tree is at most linear in the size of the input tree, then it can be realized by just one, deterministic, tree-walking tree transducer. For compositions of deterministic transducers it is decidable whether or not the translation is of linear size increase. Second, every composition of deterministic transducers can be computed in deterministic linear time on a RAM and in deterministic linear space on a Turing machine, measured in the sum of the sizes of the input and output tree. Similarly, every composition of nondeterministic transducers can be computed in simultaneous polynomial time and linear space on a nondeterministic Turing machine. Their output tree languages are deterministic context-sensitive, i.e., can be recognized in deterministic linear space on a Turing machine. The membership problem for compositions of nondeterministic translations is nondeterministic polynomial time and deterministic linear space. The membership problem for the composition of a nondeterministic and a deterministic tree-walking tree translation (for a nondeterministic IO macro tree translation) is log-space reducible to a context-free language, whereas the membership problem for the composition of a deterministic and a nondeterministic tree-walking tree translation (for a nondeterministic OI macro tree translation) is possibly NP-complete

    Comparison-Free Polyregular Functions.

    This paper introduces a new automata-theoretic class of string-to-string functions with polynomialgrowth. Several equivalent definitions are provided: a machine model which is a restricted variant ofpebble transducers, and a few inductive definitions that close the class of regular functions undercertain operations. Our motivation for studying this class comes from another characterization,which we merely mention here but prove elsewhere, based on a λ-calculus with a linear type system.As their name suggests, these comparison-free polyregular functions form a subclass of polyregularfunctions; we prove that the inclusion is strict. We also show that they are incomparable withHDT0L transductions, closed under usual function composition – but not under a certain “map”combinator – and satisfy a comparison-free version of the pebble minimization theorem.On the broader topic of polynomial growth transductions, we also consider the recently introducedlayered streaming string transducers (SSTs), or equivalently k-marble transducers. We prove that afunction can be obtained by composing such transducers together if and only if it is polyregular,and that k-layered SSTs (or k-marble transducers) are closed under “map” and equivalent to acorresponding notion of (k + 1)-layered HDT0L systems

    Development of a methodology for creating an on-line layout assistant for electronic publications for mobile devices

    The purpose of this study is to develop a methodology for creating an on-line assistant for electronic publications for mobile devices. The survey of experts is determined the basic requirements for an on-line assistant. Based on the results of the survey, the optimal functions and sub-functions of an on-line assistant for the layout of electronic publications for mobile devices are formed. The consistency of experts' opinions was checked. As a result, partial coherence of expert opinions was obtained, the corresponding indicator is 0.68. The main types of internal structure of the online assistant are reviewed and its hybrid structure is developed. QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, and Scribus were used as software tools for developing training videos in the structure of the online assistant. The structure of the online assistant for layout of electronic publications for mobile devices was designed. Training videos were created as components of the online assistant. The stages of creating a training video were: script development, development of text material, rehearsal, video recording, video processing, and uploading to a website. The design scheme of the online assistant was chosen in the form of "material design" style. A prototype of the on-line assistant was developed based on the use of a technical website script and text markup in HTML 5, CSS 3 and JavaScript. The practical result of the research is an online assistant with information on how to design electronic publications for mobile devices. The developed online assistant provides an opportunity to remotely contact a qualified specialist in the layout of electronic publications for mobile device

    Logical Characterization of Weighted Pebble Walking Automata

    International audienceWeighted automata are a conservative quantitative extension of finite automata that enjoys applications, e.g., in language processing and speech recognition. Their expressive power, however, appears to be limited, especially when they are applied to more general structures than words, such as graphs. To address this drawback, weighted automata have recently been generalized to weighted pebble walking automata, which proved useful as a tool for the specification and evaluation of quantitative properties over words and nested words. In this paper, we establish the expressive power of weighted pebble walking automata in terms of transitive closure logic, lifting a similar result by Engelfriet and Hoogeboom from the Boolean case to a quantitative setting. This result applies to a general class of graphs that subsumes all the aforementioned classes

    The pebble tree automaton and the pebble tree transducer are enhanced by additionally allowing an unbounded number of "invisible" pebbles (as opposed to the usual "visible" ones). The resulting pebble tree automata recognize the regular tree languages (i.e., can validate all generalized DTD's) and hence can find all matches of MSO definable patterns. Moreover, when viewed as a navigational device, they lead to an XPath-like formalism that has a path expression for every MSO definable binary pattern. The resulting pebble tree transducers can apply arbitrary MSO definable tests to (the observable part of) their configurations, they (still) have a decidable typechecking problem, and they can model the recursion mechanism of XSLT. The time complexity of the typechecking problem for conjunctive queries that use MSO definable patterns can often be reduced through the use of invisible pebbles.Algorithms and the Foundations of Software technolog
