    Multi-finger grasps in a dynamic environment

    Most current state-of-the-art haptic devices render only a single force, however almost all human grasps are characterised by multiple forces and torques applied by the fingers and palms of the hand to the object. In this chapter we will begin by considering the different types of grasp and then consider the physics of rigid objects that will be needed for correct haptic rendering. We then describe an algorithm to represent the forces associated with grasp in a natural manner. The power of the algorithm is that it considers only the capabilities of the haptic device and requires no model of the hand, thus applies to most practical grasp types. The technique is sufficiently general that it would also apply to multi-hand interactions, and hence to collaborative interactions where several people interact with the same rigid object. Key concepts in friction and rigid body dynamics are discussed and applied to the problem of rendering multiple forces to allow the person to choose their grasp on a virtual object and perceive the resulting movement via the forces in a natural way.     These proceedings report the results of a workshop on space telerobotics, which was held at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, January 20-22, 1987. Sponsored by the NASA Office of Aeronautics and Space Technology (OAST), the Workshop reflected NASA's interest in developing new telerobotics technology for automating the space systems planned for the 1990s and beyond. The workshop provided a window into NASA telerobotics research, allowing leading researchers in telerobotics to exchange ideas on manipulation, control, system architectures, artificial intelligence, and machine sensing. One of the objectives was to identify important unsolved problems of current interest. The workshop consisted of surveys, tutorials, and contributed papers of both theoretical and practical interest.     This is the 13th"Future of the Internet" canvassing Pew Research Center and Elon University's Imagining the Internet Center have conducted together to gather expert views about important digital issues. In this report, the questions focused on the prospects for improvements in the tone and activities of the digital public sphere by 2035. This is a nonscientific canvassing based on a nonrandom sample; this broad array of opinions about where current trends may lead in the next decade represents only the points of view of the individuals who responded to the queries.Pew Research Center and Elon's Imagining the Internet Center built a database of experts to canvass from a wide range of fields, inviting professionals and policy people based in government bodies, nonprofits and foundations, technology businesses and think tanks, as well as interested academics and technology innovators. The predictions reported here came in response to a set of questions in an online canvassing conducted between June 29 and Aug. 2, 2021.In all, 862 technology innovators and developers, business and policy leaders, researchers and activists responded to at least one of the questions covered in this report.
