    Modeling And Dynamic Resource Allocation For High Definition And Mobile Video Streams

    Video streaming traffic has been surging in the last few years, which has resulted in an increase of its Internet traffic share on a daily basis. The importance of video streaming management has been emphasized with the advent of High Definition: HD) video streaming, as it requires by its nature more network resources. In this dissertation, we provide a better support for managing HD video traffic over both wireless and wired networks through several contributions. We present a simple, general and accurate video source model: Simplified Seasonal ARIMA Model: SAM). SAM is capable of capturing the statistical characteristics of video traces with less than 5% difference from their calculated optimal models. SAM is shown to be capable of modeling video traces encoded with MPEG-4 Part2, MPEG-4 Part10, and Scalable Video Codec: SVC) standards, using various encoding settings. We also provide a large and publicly-available collection of HD video traces along with their analyses results. These analyses include a full statistical analysis of HD videos, in addition to modeling, factor and cluster analyses. These results show that by using SAM, we can achieve up to 50% improvement in video traffic prediction accuracy. In addition, we developed several video tools, including an HD video traffic generator based on our model. Finally, to improve HD video streaming resource management, we present a SAM-based delay-guaranteed dynamic resource allocation: DRA) scheme that can provide up to 32.4% improvement in bandwidth utilization

    Transport Layer Optimizations for Heterogeneous Wireless Multimedia Networks

    The explosive growth of the Internet during the last few years, has been propelled by the TCP/IP protocol suite and the best effort packet forwarding service. However, quality of service (QoS) is far from being a reality especially for multimedia services like video streaming and video conferencing. In the case of wireless and mobile networks, the problem becomes even worse due to the physics of the medium, resulting into further deterioration of the system performance. Goal of this dissertation is the systematic development of comprehensive models that jointly characterize the performance of transport protocols and media delivery in heterogeneous wireless networks. At the core of our novel methodology, is the use of analytical models for driving the design of media transport algorithms, so that the delivery of conversational and non-interactive multimedia data is enhanced in terms of throughput, delay, and jitter. More speciffically, we develop analytical models that characterize the throughput and goodput of the transmission control protocol (TCP) and the transmission friendly rate control (TFRC) protocol, when CBR and VBR multimedia workloads are considered. Subsequently, we enhance the transport protocol models with new parameters that capture the playback buffer performance and the expected video distortion at the receiver. In this way a complete end-to-end model for media streaming is obtained. This model is used as a basis for a new algorithm for rate-distortion optimized mode selection in video streaming appli- cations. As a next step, we extend the developed models for the aforementioned protocols, so that heterogeneous wireless networks can be accommodated. Subsequently, new algorithms are proposed in order to enhance the developed media streaming algorithms when heterogeneous wireless networks are also included.     Performance Evaluation of MBAC solutions

    Admission control prevents certain flows from accessing a network with regard to the current utilization level of its resources with the ultimate goal of avoiding congestion and performance collapses, so that, accepted flows receive a sufficient level of Quality of Service (QoS). In this paper, we evaluate the performance of three measurement-based admission control (MBAC) solutions in the context of semantic networks, which autonomously acquire a knowledge on the on-going traffic. Each MBAC solution is carefully parameterized to have identical performance target expressed in terms of maximum tolerable loss rate or either queueing delay. We also include the results that would be obtainable by an ideal admission control so as to benchmark the performance of existing MBAC. An extensive set of simulations, using different methods for representing the background traffic, viz. a Poisson process, a PPBP process and a real trace, were carried out to evaluate the performance of each solution. Our results tend to show that, in case of a target loss rate, when the characteristics of background traffic deviate significantly from a "regular" source (e.g., a Poisson process) to more variable sources (e.g., a PPBP process, a real trace), the "Aggregate Traffic Envelopes" and "Equivalent Capacity" solutions brings satisfactory results, much better than those obtained by the "Measured Sum" solution. However, if one deals with a queuing delay target, the outcomes of any MBAC solution are generally less successful, as they typically tend to deviate further from the ideal admission control, often in an overly conservative way
