    Knowledge-based and data-driven approaches for geographical information access

    Geographical Information Access (GeoIA) can be defined as a way of retrieving information from textual collections that includes the automatic analysis and interpretation of the geographical constraints and terms present in queries and documents. This PhD thesis presents, describes and evaluates several heterogeneous approaches for the following three GeoIA tasks: Geographical Information Retrieval (GIR), Geographical Question Answering (GeoQA), and Textual Georeferencing (TG). The GIR task deals with user queries that search over documents (e.g. ¿vineyards in California?) and the GeoQA task treats questions that retrieve answers (e.g. ¿What is the capital of France?). On the other hand, TG is the task of associate one or more georeferences (such as polygons or coordinates in a geodetic reference system) to electronic documents. Current state-of-the-art AI algorithms are not yet fully understanding the semantic meaning and the geographical constraints and terms present in queries and document collections. This thesis attempts to improve the effectiveness results of GeoIA tasks by: 1) improving the detection, understanding, and use of a part of the geographical and the thematic content of queries and documents with Toponym Recognition, Toponym Disambiguation and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques, and 2) combining Geographical Knowledge-Based Heuristics based on common sense with Data-Driven IR algorithms. The main contributions of this thesis to the state-of-the-art of GeoIA tasks are: 1) The presentation of 10 novel approaches for GeoIA tasks: 3 approaches for GIR, 3 for GeoQA, and 4 for Textual Georeferencing (TG). 2) The evaluation of these novel approaches in these contexts: within official evaluation benchmarks, after evaluation benchmarks with the test collections, and with other specific datasets. Most of these algorithms have been evaluated in international evaluations and some of them achieved top-ranked state-of-the-art results, including top-performing results in GIR (GeoCLEF 2007) and TG (MediaEval 2014) benchmarks. 3) The experiments reported in this PhD thesis show that the approaches can combine effectively Geographical Knowledge and NLP with Data-Driven techniques to improve the efectiveness measures of the three Geographical Information Access tasks investigated. 4) TALPGeoIR: a novel GIR approach that combines Geographical Knowledge ReRanking (GeoKR), NLP and Relevance Feedback (RF) that achieved state-of-the-art results in official GeoCLEF benchmarks (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2008; Mandl et al., 2008) and posterior experiments (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2015a). This approach has been evaluated with the full GeoCLEF corpus (100 topics) and showed that GeoKR, NLP, and RF techniques evaluated separately or in combination improve the results in MAP and R-Precision effectiveness measures of the state-of-the-art IR algorithms TF-IDF, BM25 and InL2 and show statistical significance in most of the experiments. 5) GeoTALP-QA: a scope-based GeoQA approach for Spanish and English and its evaluation with a set of questions of the Spanish geography (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2006). 6) Four state-of-the-art Textual Georeferencing approaches for informal and formal documents that achieved state-of-the-art results in evaluation benchmarks (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2014) and posterior experiments (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2011; Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2015b).L'Accés a la Informació Geogràfica (GeoAI) pot ser definit com una forma de recuperar informació de col·lecions textuals que inclou l'anàlisi automàtic i la interpretació dels termes i restriccions geogràfiques que apareixen en consultes i documents. Aquesta tesi doctoral presenta, descriu i avalua varies aproximacions heterogènies a les seguents tasques de GeoAI: Recuperació de la Informació Geogràfica (RIG), Cerca de la Resposta Geogràfica (GeoCR), i Georeferenciament Textual (GT). La tasca de RIG tracta amb consultes d'usuari que cerquen documents (e.g. ¿vinyes a California?) i la tasca GeoCR tracta de recuperar respostes concretes a preguntes (e.g. ¿Quina és la capital de França?). D'altra banda, GT es la tasca de relacionar una o més referències geogràfiques (com polígons o coordenades en un sistema de referència geodètic) a documents electrònics. Els algoritmes de l'estat de l'art actual en Intel·ligència Artificial encara no comprenen completament el significat semàntic i els termes i les restriccions geogràfiques presents en consultes i col·leccions de documents. Aquesta tesi intenta millorar els resultats en efectivitat de les tasques de GeoAI de la seguent manera: 1) millorant la detecció, comprensió, i la utilització d'una part del contingut geogràfic i temàtic de les consultes i documents amb tècniques de reconeixement de topònims, desambiguació de topònims, i Processament del Llenguatge Natural (PLN), i 2) combinant heurístics basats en Coneixement Geogràfic i en el sentit comú humà amb algoritmes de Recuperació de la Informació basats en dades. Les principals contribucions d'aquesta tesi a l'estat de l'art de les tasques de GeoAI són: 1) La presentació de 10 noves aproximacions a les tasques de GeoAI: 3 aproximacions per RIG, 3 per GeoCR, i 4 per Georeferenciament Textual (GT). 2) L'avaluació d'aquestes noves aproximacions en aquests contexts: en el marc d'avaluacions comparatives internacionals, posteriorment a avaluacions comparatives internacionals amb les col·lections de test, i amb altres conjunts de dades específics. La majoria d'aquests algoritmes han estat avaluats en avaluacions comparatives internacionals i alguns d'ells aconseguiren alguns dels millors resultats en l'estat de l'art, com per exemple els resultats en comparatives de RIG (GeoCLEF 2007) i GT (MediaEval 2014). 3) Els experiments descrits en aquesta tesi mostren que les aproximacions poden combinar coneixement geogràfic i PLN amb tècniques basades en dades per millorar les mesures d'efectivitat en les tres tasques de l'Accés a la Informació Geogràfica investigades. 4) TALPGeoIR: una nova aproximació a la RIG que combina Re-Ranking amb Coneixement Geogràfic (GeoKR), PLN i Retroalimentació de Rellevancia (RR) que aconseguí resultats en l'estat de l'art en comparatives oficials GeoCLEF (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2008; Mandl et al., 2008) i en experiments posteriors (Ferrés and Rodríguez, 2015a).     Music Synchronization, Audio Matching, Pattern Detection, and User Interfaces for a Digital Music Library System

    Over the last two decades, growing efforts to digitize our cultural heritage could be observed. Most of these digitization initiatives pursuit either one or both of the following goals: to conserve the documents - especially those threatened by decay - and to provide remote access on a grand scale. For music documents these trends are observable as well, and by now several digital music libraries are in existence. An important characteristic of these music libraries is an inherent multimodality resulting from the large variety of available digital music representations, such as scanned score, symbolic score, audio recordings, and videos. In addition, for each piece of music there exists not only one document of each type, but many. Considering and exploiting this multimodality and multiplicity, the DFG-funded digital library initiative PROBADO MUSIC aimed at developing a novel user-friendly interface for content-based retrieval, document access, navigation, and browsing in large music collections. The implementation of such a front end requires the multimodal linking and indexing of the music documents during preprocessing. As the considered music collections can be very large, the automated or at least semi-automated calculation of these structures would be recommendable. The field of music information retrieval (MIR) is particularly concerned with the development of suitable procedures, and it was the goal of PROBADO MUSIC to include existing and newly developed MIR techniques to realize the envisioned digital music library system. In this context, the present thesis discusses the following three MIR tasks: music synchronization, audio matching, and pattern detection. We are going to identify particular issues in these fields and provide algorithmic solutions as well as prototypical implementations. In Music synchronization, for each position in one representation of a piece of music the corresponding position in another representation is calculated. This thesis focuses on the task of aligning scanned score pages of orchestral music with audio recordings. Here, a previously unconsidered piece of information is the textual specification of transposing instruments provided in the score. Our evaluations show that the neglect of such information can result in a measurable loss of synchronization accuracy. Therefore, we propose an OCR-based approach for detecting and interpreting the transposition information in orchestral scores. For a given audio snippet, audio matching methods automatically calculate all musically similar excerpts within a collection of audio recordings. In this context, subsequence dynamic time warping (SSDTW) is a well-established approach as it allows for local and global tempo variations between the query and the retrieved matches. Moving to real-life digital music libraries with larger audio collections, however, the quadratic runtime of SSDTW results in untenable response times. To improve on the response time, this thesis introduces a novel index-based approach to SSDTW-based audio matching. We combine the idea of inverted file lists introduced by Kurth and Müller (Efficient index-based audio matching, 2008) with the shingling techniques often used in the audio identification scenario. In pattern detection, all repeating patterns within one piece of music are determined. Usually, pattern detection operates on symbolic score documents and is often used in the context of computer-aided motivic analysis. Envisioned as a new feature of the PROBADO MUSIC system, this thesis proposes a string-based approach to pattern detection and a novel interactive front end for result visualization and analysis

    Evaluation Methodologies for Visual Information Retrieval and Annotation

    Die automatisierte Evaluation von Informations-Retrieval-Systemen erlaubt Performanz und Qualität der Informationsgewinnung zu bewerten. Bereits in den 60er Jahren wurden erste Methodologien für die system-basierte Evaluation aufgestellt und in den Cranfield Experimenten überprüft. Heutzutage gehören Evaluation, Test und Qualitätsbewertung zu einem aktiven Forschungsfeld mit erfolgreichen Evaluationskampagnen und etablierten Methoden. Evaluationsmethoden fanden zunächst in der Bewertung von Textanalyse-Systemen Anwendung. Mit dem rasanten Voranschreiten der Digitalisierung wurden diese Methoden sukzessive auf die Evaluation von Multimediaanalyse-Systeme übertragen. Dies geschah häufig, ohne die Evaluationsmethoden in Frage zu stellen oder sie an die veränderten Gegebenheiten der Multimediaanalyse anzupassen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der system-basierten Evaluation von Indizierungssystemen für Bildkollektionen. Sie adressiert drei Problemstellungen der Evaluation von Annotationen: Nutzeranforderungen für das Suchen und Verschlagworten von Bildern, Evaluationsmaße für die Qualitätsbewertung von Indizierungssystemen und Anforderungen an die Erstellung visueller Testkollektionen. Am Beispiel der Evaluation automatisierter Photo-Annotationsverfahren werden relevante Konzepte mit Bezug zu Nutzeranforderungen diskutiert, Möglichkeiten zur Erstellung einer zuverlässigen Ground Truth bei geringem Kosten- und Zeitaufwand vorgestellt und Evaluationsmaße zur Qualitätsbewertung eingeführt, analysiert und experimentell verglichen. Traditionelle Maße zur Ermittlung der Performanz werden in vier Dimensionen klassifiziert. Evaluationsmaße vergeben üblicherweise binäre Kosten für korrekte und falsche Annotationen. Diese Annahme steht im Widerspruch zu der Natur von Bildkonzepten. Das gemeinsame Auftreten von Bildkonzepten bestimmt ihren semantischen Zusammenhang und von daher sollten diese auch im Zusammenhang auf ihre Richtigkeit hin überprüft werden. In dieser Arbeit wird aufgezeigt, wie semantische Ähnlichkeiten visueller Konzepte automatisiert abgeschätzt und in den Evaluationsprozess eingebracht werden können. Die Ergebnisse der Arbeit inkludieren ein Nutzermodell für die konzeptbasierte Suche von Bildern, eine vollständig bewertete Testkollektion und neue Evaluationsmaße für die anforderungsgerechte Qualitätsbeurteilung von Bildanalysesystemen.Performance assessment plays a major role in the research on Information Retrieval (IR) systems. Starting with the Cranfield experiments in the early 60ies, methodologies for the system-based performance assessment emerged and established themselves, resulting in an active research field with a number of successful benchmarking activities. With the rise of the digital age, procedures of text retrieval evaluation were often transferred to multimedia retrieval evaluation without questioning their direct applicability. This thesis investigates the problem of system-based performance assessment of annotation approaches in generic image collections. It addresses three important parts of annotation evaluation, namely user requirements for the retrieval of annotated visual media, performance measures for multi-label evaluation, and visual test collections. Using the example of multi-label image annotation evaluation, I discuss which concepts to employ for indexing, how to obtain a reliable ground truth to moderate costs, and which evaluation measures are appropriate. This is accompanied by a thorough analysis of related work on system-based performance assessment in Visual Information Retrieval (VIR). Traditional performance measures are classified into four dimensions and investigated according to their appropriateness for visual annotation evaluation. One of the main ideas in this thesis adheres to the common assumption on the binary nature of the score prediction dimension in annotation evaluation. However, the predicted concepts and the set of true indexed concepts interrelate with each other. This work will show how to utilise these semantic relationships for a fine-grained evaluation scenario. Outcomes of this thesis result in a user model for concept-based image retrieval, a fully assessed image annotation test collection, and a number of novel performance measures for image annotation evaluation

One of the main ideas in this thesis adheres to the common assumption on the binary nature of the score prediction dimension in annotation evaluation. However, the predicted concepts and the set of true indexed concepts interrelate with each other. This work will show how to utilise these semantic relationships for a fine-grained evaluation scenario. Outcomes of this thesis result in a user model for concept-based image retrieval, a fully assessed image annotation test collection, and a number of novel performance measures for image annotation evaluation

    Towards effective cross-lingual search of user-generated internet speech

    The very rapid growth in user-generated social spoken content on online platforms is creating new challenges for Spoken Content Retrieval (SCR) technologies. There are many potential choices for how to design a robust SCR framework for UGS content, but the current lack of detailed investigation means that there is a lack of understanding of the specifc challenges, and little or no guidance available to inform these choices. This thesis investigates the challenges of effective SCR for UGS content, and proposes novel SCR methods that are designed to cope with the challenges of UGS content. The work presented in this thesis can be divided into three areas of contribution as follows. The first contribution of this work is critiquing the issues and challenges that in influence the effectiveness of searching UGS content in both mono-lingual and cross-lingual settings. The second contribution is to develop an effective Query Expansion (QE) method for UGS. This research reports that, encountered in UGS content, the variation in the length, quality and structure of the relevant documents can harm the effectiveness of QE techniques across different queries. Seeking to address this issue, this work examines the utilisation of Query Performance Prediction (QPP) techniques for improving QE in UGS, and presents a novel framework specifically designed for predicting of the effectiveness of QE. Thirdly, this work extends the utilisation of QPP in UGS search to improve cross-lingual search for UGS by predicting the translation effectiveness. The thesis proposes novel methods to estimate the quality of translation for cross-lingual UGS search. An empirical evaluation that demonstrates the quality of the proposed method on alternative translation outputs extracted from several Machine Translation (MT) systems developed for this task. The research then shows how this framework can be integrated in cross-lingual UGS search to find relevant translations for improved retrieval performance

    The 2nd International Conference "Cultural Heritage online – Empowering users: an active role for user communities" was held in Florence on 15-16 December 2009. It was organised by the Fondazione Rinascimento Digitale, the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities and the Library of Congress, through the National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program - NDIIP partners. The conference topics were related to digital libraries, digital preservation and the changing paradigms, focussing on user needs and expectations, analysing how to involve users and the cultural heritage community in creating and sharing digital resources. The sessions investigated also new organisational issues and roles, and cultural and economic limits from an international perspective
