Computerization of workflows, guidelines and care pathways: a review of implementation challenges for process-oriented health information systems
There is a need to integrate the various theoretical frameworks and formalisms for modeling clinical guidelines, workflows, and pathways, in order to move beyond providing support for individual clinical decisions and toward the provision of process-oriented, patient-centered, health information systems (HIS). In this review, we analyze the challenges in developing process-oriented HIS that formally model guidelines, workflows, and care pathways. A qualitative meta-synthesis was performed on studies published in English between 1995 and 2010 that addressed the modeling process and reported the exposition of a new methodology, model, system implementation, or system architecture. Thematic analysis, principal component analysis (PCA) and data visualisation techniques were used to identify and cluster the underlying implementation âchallengeâ themes. One hundred and eight relevant studies were selected for review. Twenty-five underlying âchallengeâ themes were identified. These were clustered into 10 distinct groups, from which a conceptual model of the implementation process was developed. We found that the development of systems supporting individual clinical decisions is evolving toward the implementation of adaptable care pathways on the semantic web, incorporating formal, clinical, and organizational ontologies, and the use of workflow management systems. These architectures now need to be implemented and evaluated on a wider scale within clinical settings
Semantic business process management: a vision towards using semantic web services for business process management
Business process management (BPM) is the approach to manage the execution of IT-supported business operations from a business expert's view rather than from a technical perspective. However, the degree of mechanization in BPM is still very limited, creating inertia in the necessary evolution and dynamics of business processes, and BPM does not provide a truly unified view on the process space of an organization. We trace back the problem of mechanization of BPM to an ontological one, i.e. the lack of machine-accessible semantics, and argue that the modeling constructs of semantic Web services frameworks, especially WSMO, are a natural fit to creating such a representation. A component-based product line architecture for workflow management systems
This paper presents a component-based product line for workflow management systems. The process followed to design the product line was based on the Catalysis method. Extensions were made to represent variability across the process. The domain of workflow management systems has been shown to be appropriate to the application of the product line approach as there are a standard architecture and models established by a regulatory board, the Workflow Management Coalition. In addition, there is a demand for similar workflow management systems but with some different features. The product line architecture was evaluated with Rapide simulation tools. The evaluation was based on selected scenarios, thus, avoiding implementation issues. The strategy that has been used to populate the architecture and experiment with the product line is shown. Tasks, cognitive agents, and KB-DSS in workflow and process management
The purpose of this paper is to propose a nonparametric interest rate term structure model and investigate its implications on term structure dynamics and prices of interest rate derivative securities. The nonparametric spot interest rate process is estimated from the observed short-term interest rates following a robust estimation procedure and the market price of interest rate risk is estimated as implied from the historical term structure data. That is, instead of imposing a priori restrictions on the model, data are allowed to speak for themselves, and at the same time the model retains a parsimonious structure and the computational tractability. The model is implemented using historical Canadian interest rate term structure data. The parametric models with closed form solutions for bond and bond option prices, namely the Vasicek (1977) and CIR (1985) models, are also estimated for comparison purpose. The empirical results not only provide strong evidence that the traditional spot interest rate models and market prices of interest rate risk are severely misspecified but also suggest that different model specifications have significant impact on term structure dynamics and prices of interest rate derivative securities.
Model-driven engineering approach to design and implementation of robot control system
In this paper we apply a model-driven engineering approach to designing
domain-specific solutions for robot control system development. We present a
case study of the complete process, including identification of the domain
meta-model, graphical notation definition and source code generation for
subsumption architecture -- a well-known example of robot control architecture.
Our goal is to show that both the definition of the robot-control architecture
and its supporting tools fits well into the typical workflow of model-driven

Two Case Studies of Subsystem Design for General-Purpose CSCW Software Architectures
This paper discusses subsystem design guidelines for the software architecture of general-purpose computer supported cooperative work systems, i.e., systems that are designed to be applicable in various application areas requiring explicit collaboration support. In our opinion, guidelines for subsystem level design are rarely given most guidelines currently given apply to the programming language level. We extract guidelines from a case study of the redesign and extension of an advanced commercial workflow management system and place them into the context of existing software engineering research. The guidelines are then validated against the design decisions made in the construction of a widely used web-based groupware system. Our approach is based on the well-known distinction between essential (logical) and physical architectures. We show how essential architecture design can be based on a direct mapping of abstract functional concepts as found in general-purpose systems to modules in the essential architecture. The essential architecture is next mapped to a physical architecture by applying software clustering and replication to achieve the required distribution and performance characteristics
Incremental Consistency Checking in Delta-oriented UML-Models for Automation Systems
Automation systems exist in many variants and may evolve over time in order
to deal with different environment contexts or to fulfill changing customer
requirements. This induces an increased complexity during design-time as well
as tedious maintenance efforts. We already proposed a multi-perspective
modeling approach to improve the development of such systems. It operates on
different levels of abstraction by using well-known UML-models with activity,
composite structure and state chart models. Each perspective was enriched with
delta modeling to manage variability and evolution. As an extension, we now
focus on the development of an efficient consistency checking method at several
levels to ensure valid variants of the automation system. Consistency checking
must be provided for each perspective in isolation, in-between the perspectives

Modeling and Execution of Multienterprise Business Processes
We discuss a fully featured multienterprise business process plattform
(ME-BPP) based on the concepts of agent-based business processes. Using the
concepts of the subject-oriented business process (S-BPM) methodology we
developed an architecture to realize a platform for the execution of
distributed business processes. The platform is implemented based on cloud
technology using commercial services. For our discussion we used the well known
Service Interaction Patterns, as they are empirically developed from typical
business-to-business interactions. We can demonstrate that all patterns can be
easily modeled and executed based on our architecture. We propose therefore a
change from a control flow based to an agent based view to model and enact
