The use of computer-aided tools is becoming increasingly important in assembly planning. This is due on the one hand to the requirements due to ever shorter planning cycles and on the other hand to the increasing complexity of the assembly systems used today. The implementation of user-friendly planning software is made easier by the wide range of standard programs and an improved price-performance ratio of the computers. This also ensures that the acceptance of computer workstations in the planning area increases if the basic ergonomic principles are observed. However, the specific requirements of assembly technology are not or only insufficiently taken into account in the existing program systems. Simulation technology is of central importance in the planning process of new or to be modified assembly systems. It can be used to obtain information about the performance and weak points by modeling the real time behavior of planned systems. In particular, the question of the degree of utilization and the resulting output of manufactured devices can be answered by the simulation. In the present work the possibilities which are opened by the integration of the simulation into the planning process are shown. In addition, the measures to increase the degree of utilization of assembly systems are systematically presented. The limits of alternative methods for simulation technology when reviewing selected improvement measures are set out. Then there is an introduction to the special requirements of the assembly system planning with regard to the simulation. It is pointed out which structures are primarily to be found in assembly in order to be able to define the requirements for specific components for the assembly system simulation. The assembly of electronic components is also dealt with as an important special case in assembly. This is followed by the presentation of the procedure for simulation studies with a focus on modeling. The chapter is rounded off by a description of the work content of planners and simulation experts during a simulation study. The use of a general-purpose simulation package is presented using a specific example for the flexible assembly of small electromechanical devices. With the simulator GPSS-FORTRAN version III, a very complex line was modeled and various layout and control-specific issues were dealt with. This shows that with the help of this very powerful simulation tool, planning support is fundamentally possible. From the experience, however, the problems became clear, which were made in particular with regard to the acceptance by the planner and the ability to interpret the results. As a consequence of the knowledge gained with GPSS-FORTRAN, the SIMU simulation system was developed, which is primarily designed for the rough planning of assembly structures. This chapter describes the structure and performance of SIMU and demonstrates it on a typical assembly system. The ergonomic aspect of operator guidance and the presentation of results, including animation, is particularly important. Finally, a comparison of SIMU with the GPSS-FORTRAN assembly model is carried out. The last chapter deals with the simulation to increase the use of linked SMD pick and place machines. First, the special problem areas of the assembly of electronic components are shown and approaches for improvement are developed. SASB was developed to model and simulate processes in flexible assembly lines. This simulator can be used to compare alternative line configurations with one another and to answer questions related to order control. One focus here is on the economy of different placement systems. Finally, a machine data management system is presented with which, among other things, simulation-relevant input data can be determined directly from the assembly line and made available to the system operator online for the initiation of improvement measures on a graphic screen. The work presented here offers the planner of complex assembly systems new aids that support him in his tasks and give the executive staff reliable results as the basis for decisions. This makes an important contribution on the way to integrated computer-aided assembly planning. The software modules were designed in such a way that they can be combined with other program systems and are therefore to be regarded as an integral part of a process chain
