Photovoltaic Energy Harvesting for Millimeter-Scale Systems
The Internet of Things (IoT) based on mm-scale sensors is a transformational technology that opens up new capabilities for biomedical devices, surveillance, micro-robots and industrial monitoring. Energy harvesting approaches to power IoT have traditionally included thermal, vibration and radio frequency. However, the achievement of efficient energy scavenging for IoT at the mm-scale or sub mm-scale has been elusive. In this work, I show that photovoltaic (PV) cells at the mm-scale can be an alternative means of wireless power transfer to mm-scale sensors for IoT, utilizing ambient indoor lighting or intentional irradiation of near-infrared (NIR) LED sources through biological tissue. Single silicon and GaAs photovoltaic cells at the mm-scale can achieve a power conversion efficiency of more than 17 % for silicon and 30 % for GaAs under low-flux NIR irradiation at 850 nm through the optimized device structure and sidewall/surface passivation studies, which guarantees perpetual operation of mm-scale sensors. Furthermore, monolithic single-junction GaAs photovoltaic modules offer a means for series-interconnected cells to provide sufficient voltage (> 5 V) for direct battery charging, and bypassing needs for voltage up-conversion circuitry. However, there is a continuing challenge to miniaturize such PV systems down to the sub mm-scale with minimal optical losses from device isolation and metal interconnects and efficient voltage up-conversion. Vertically stacked dual-junction PV cells and modules are demonstrated to increase the output voltage per cell and minimize area losses for direct powering of miniature devices for IoT and bio-implantable applications with low-irradiance narrowband spectral illumination. Dual-junction PV cells at small dimensions (150 µm x 150 µm) demonstrate power conversion efficiency greater than 22 % with more than 1.2 V output voltage under low-flux 850 nm NIR LED illumination, which is sufficient for batteryless operation of miniaturized CMOS IC chips. The output voltage of dual-junction PV modules with eight series-connected single cells is greater than 10 V while maintaining an efficiency of more than 18 %. Finally, I demonstrate monolithic PV/LED modules at the µm-scale for brain-machine interfaces, enabling two-way optical power and data transfer in a through-tissue configuration. The wafer-level assembly plan for the 3D vertical integration of three different systems including GaAs LED/PV modules, CMOS silicon chips, and neural probes is proposed.PHDElectrical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Routing and Mobility on IPv6 over LoWPAN
The IoT means a world-wide network of interconnected objects based on standard communication
protocols. An object in this context is a quotidian physical device augmented with
sensing/actuating, processing, storing and communication capabilities. These objects must be
able to interact with the surrounding environment where they are placed and to cooperate with
neighbouring objects in order to accomplish a common objective. The IoT objects have also the
capabilities of converting the sensed data into automated instructions and communicating them
to other objects through the communication networks, avoiding the human intervention in several
tasks. Most of IoT deployments are based on small devices with restricted computational
resources and energy constraints. For this reason, initially the scientific community did not
consider the use of IP protocol suite in this scenarios because there was the perception that it
was too heavy to the available resources on such devices. Meanwhile, the scientific community
and the industry started to rethink about the use of IP protocol suite in all IoT devices and now
it is considered as the solution to provide connectivity between the IoT devices, independently
of the Layer 2 protocol in use, and to connect them to the Internet. Despite the use of IP suite
protocol in all devices and the amount of solutions proposed, many open issues remain unsolved
in order to reach a seamless integration between the IoT and the Internet and to provide the
conditions to IoT service widespread. This thesis addressed the challenges associated with the
interconnectivity between the Internet and the IoT devices and with the security aspects of
the IoT. In the interconnectivity between the IoT devices and the Internet the problem is how
to provide valuable information to the Internet connected devices, independently of the supported
IP protocol version, without being necessary accessed directly to the IoT nodes. In order
to solve this problem, solutions based on Representational state transfer (REST) web services
and IPv4 to IPv6 dual stack transition mechanism were proposed and evaluated. The REST web
service and the transition mechanism runs only at the border router without penalizing the IoT
constrained devices. The mitigation of the effects of internal and external security attacks
minimizing the overhead imposed on the IoT devices is the security challenge addressed in this
thesis. Three different solutions were proposed. The first is a mechanism to prevent remotely
initiated transport level Denial of Service attacks that avoids the use of inefficient and hard to
manage traditional firewalls. It is based on filtering at the border router the traffic received
from the Internet and destined to the IoT network according to the conditions announced by
each IoT device. The second is a network access security framework that can be used to control
the nodes that have access to the network, based on administrative approval, and to enforce
security compliance to the authorized nodes. The third is a network admission control framework
that prevents IoT unauthorized nodes to communicate with IoT authorized nodes or with
the Internet, which drastically reduces the number of possible security attacks. The network
admission control was also exploited as a management mechanism as it can be used to manage
the network size in terms of number of nodes, making the network more manageable, increasing
its reliability and extending its lifetime.
Entretanto, a comunidade científica e a
A segunda solução,
Enabling Hardware Green Internet of Things: A review of Substantial Issues
Between now and the near future, the Internet of Things (IoT) will redesign the socio-ecological morphology of the human terrain. The IoT ecosystem deploys diverse sensor platforms connecting millions of heterogeneous objects through the Internet. Irrespective of sensor functionality, most sensors are low energy consumption devices and are designed to transmit sporadically or continuously. However, when we consider the millions of connected sensors powering various user applications, their energy efficiency (EE) becomes a critical issue. Therefore, the importance of EE in IoT technology, as well as the development of EE solutions for sustainable IoT technology, cannot be overemphasised. Propelled by this need, EE proposals are expected to address the EE issues in the IoT context. Consequently, many developments continue to emerge, and the need to highlight them to provide clear insights to researchers on eco-sustainable and green IoT technologies becomes a crucial task. To pursue a clear vision of green IoT, this study aims to present the current state-of-the art insights into energy saving practices and strategies on green IoT. The major contribution of this study includes reviews and discussions of substantial issues in the enabling of hardware green IoT, such as green machine to machine, green wireless sensor networks, green radio frequency identification, green microcontroller units, integrated circuits and processors. This review will contribute significantly towards the future implementation of green and eco-sustainable IoT

the proliferation of these systems several challenges start to appear and put in jeopardy
the acceptance by the population, mainly in terms of sustainability and environmental
issues. This Thesis introduces a new system composed by a modular IoT smart node that
is self-configurable and sustainable with the support of machine learning techniques, as
well as the research and development to achieve a innovative solution considering data
analysis, wireless communications and hardware and software development. For all these,
concepts are introduced, research methodologies, tests and results are presented and discussed
as well as the development and implementation. The developed research and
methodology shows that Random Forest was the best choice for the data analysis in the
self-configuration of the hardware and communication systems and that Edge Computing
has an advantage in terms of energy efficiency and latency. The autonomous communication
system was able to create a 65% more sustainable node, in terms of energy
consumption, with only a 13% decrease in quality of service. The modular approach for
the smart node presented advantages in the integration, scalability and implementation
of smart cities projects when facing traditional implementations, reducing up to 45% the
energy consumption of the overall system and 60% of messages exchanged, without compromising
the system performance. The deployment of this new system will help Smart
Cities, in a worldwide fashion, to decrease their environmental issues and comply with
rules and regulations to reduce CO2 emission. Flexi-WVSNP-DASH: A Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform for the Internet of Things
abstract: Video capture, storage, and distribution in wireless video sensor networks
(WVSNs) critically depends on the resources of the nodes forming the sensor
networks. In the era of big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and distributed
demand and solutions, there is a need for multi-dimensional data to be part of
the Sensor Network data that is easily accessible and consumable by humanity as
well as machinery. Images and video are expected to become as ubiquitous as is
the scalar data in traditional sensor networks. The inception of video-streaming
over the Internet, heralded a relentless research for effective ways of
distributing video in a scalable and cost effective way. There has been novel
implementation attempts across several network layers. Due to the inherent
complications of backward compatibility and need for standardization across
network layers, there has been a refocused attention to address most of the
video distribution over the application layer. As a result, a few video
streaming solutions over the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) have been
proposed. Most notable are Apple’s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) and the Motion
Picture Experts Groups Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (MPEG-DASH). These
frameworks, do not address the typical and future WVSN use cases. A highly
flexible Wireless Video Sensor Network Platform and compatible DASH (WVSNP-DASH)
are introduced. The platform's goal is to usher video as a data element that
can be integrated into traditional and non-Internet networks. A low cost,
scalable node is built from the ground up to be fully compatible with the
Internet of Things Machine to Machine (M2M) concept, as well as the ability to
be easily re-targeted to new applications in a short time. Flexi-WVSNP design
includes a multi-radio node, a middle-ware for sensor operation and
communication, a cross platform client facing data retriever/player framework,
scalable security as well as a cohesive but decoupled hardware and software
design.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
A Practical Evaluation of a High-Security Energy-Efficient Gateway for IoT Fog Computing Applications
[Abstract] Fog computing extends cloud computing to the edge of a network enabling new Internet of Things (IoT) applications and services, which may involve critical data that require privacy and security. In an IoT fog computing system, three elements can be distinguished: IoT nodes that collect data, the cloud, and interconnected IoT gateways that exchange messages with the IoT nodes and with the cloud. This article focuses on securing IoT gateways, which are assumed to be constrained in terms of computational resources, but that are able to offload some processing from the cloud and to reduce the latency in the responses to the IoT nodes. However, it is usually taken for granted that IoT gateways have direct access to the electrical grid, which is not always the case: in mission-critical applications like natural disaster relief or environmental monitoring, it is common to deploy IoT nodes and gateways in large areas where electricity comes from solar or wind energy that charge the batteries that power every device. In this article, how to secure IoT gateway communications while minimizing power consumption is analyzed. The throughput and power consumption of Rivest–Shamir–Adleman (RSA) and Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) are considered, since they are really popular, but have not been thoroughly analyzed when applied to IoT scenarios. Moreover, the most widespread Transport Layer Security (TLS) cipher suites use RSA as the main public key-exchange algorithm, but the key sizes needed are not practical for most IoT devices and cannot be scaled to high security levels. In contrast, ECC represents a much lighter and scalable alternative. Thus, RSA and ECC are compared for equivalent security levels, and power consumption and data throughput are measured using a testbed of IoT gateways. The measurements obtained indicate that, in the specific fog computing scenario proposed, ECC is clearly a much better alternative than RSA, obtaining energy consumption reductions of up to 50% and a data throughput that doubles RSA in most scenarios. These conclusions are then corroborated by a frame temporal analysis of Ethernet packets. In addition, current data compression algorithms are evaluated, concluding that, when dealing with the small payloads related to IoT applications, they do not pay off in terms of real data throughput and power consumption.Galicia.
