    An Evaluation and Selection of 3G Mobile Value-Added Service

    As the wireless communication and mobile phone market develop rapidly, telecommunication dealers provide diverse mobile value-added services for consumers to choose from. However, which mobile value-added services are those consumers need have become a worthy issue for discussion. In this empirical study, cluster analyses and analytic hierarchy processes are used to investigate and understand the need for cognition in the young users (20-29 years old). The selected subjects’ preferences for services, like mobile communication service, mobile entertainment service, mobile information service and mobile transaction service are evaluated. By surveying the subjects’ need for recognition, cluster analysis can further be used to cluster diverse mobile value-added services. Furthermore, by means of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), services that subjects pay more attention to can be sifted out for the further development of service functions. The results of analysis indicate that the mobile value-added services young users pay most attention to are: wireless emergency services in the communications category, mobile mapping in the information category, mobile taxi services in the communication category, contact list in the communication category and short messaging service in the communications category

    The needs and demands on location information have arisen rapidly. With the advancement of mobile computing technologies, many researches and studies have been conducted in providing reliable location information solution. Location based information has become an important resource for mobile users especially in giving direction or locating places. Wireless Location Based Services (Wi-LBS) highlight this scenario by explaining the application and usage of the LBS in wireless environment. Wi-LBS is introduced with respect to providing wireless method in locating places within UTP campus instead of referring to static map. The objective of this research is to integrate GIS with MMS technology as a system called Wireless Location Based Services. It is mainly focused on applying GIS elements in providing location information by utilizing the advancement of today's wireless handheld devices. Users will request for location by sending short messages using their mobile phones to the WiLBS system and the system will reply back sending the location information containing pictures and direction. Rapid Application Development (RAD) is used as the methodology in designing the system of Wi-LBS. This research also details the study on Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) that covers the sending of picture messages from Wi-LBS to mobile phones and system's function in responding to the users' requests. Various references and studies have been done regarding the successful LBS applications implemented in foreign country that leads to the interest of doing the research on LBS implementation in this country. The result from the research will be the proposed framework for Wi-LBS, the discussion on the GIS and MMS as well as the system of Wi-LBS. This study proved that Wireless Location Based Services has great potential to be commercially implemented with the growth of wireless application nowadays as today's community is eager of getting more services from wireless system

    A Low-Cost and Low-Power Messaging System Based on the LoRa Wireless Technology

    [EN] In this paper we describe a low-cost and low-power consumption messaging system based on LoRa technology. More that one billion people worldwide cannot access even the most basic connectivity services. For them even simple messaging services would be of great help, for example to farmers wishing to know the price of goods they want to sell or buy before deciding whether a possibly long, expensive and exhausting trip is undertaken. LoRa networks allow for very long wireless links that can connect villages and towns. This system falls in the category of community networks, where users build their own network where no commercial infrastructure is available.     Realtime routing and messaging in wireless networks

    Wireless technology has rapidly expanded in recent years; however, until now, it is only used to extend services in wired networks, applications that can take full advantage of mobile communication have not appeared yet. In this thesis, a practical messaging application for mobile computing is presented and a realtime Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP) for underlying wireless networks is evaluated. Mobile Yellow page Messaging and Retrieval (MYMAR) system is a new application for self-organized IEEE 802.11 compliant WLANs which consist of one Base Station (BS) and several Mobile Stations (MS) in each WLAN segment. In this distributed free public-access mobile network, BSs provide yellow page-like local information, such as digital maps, business advertisements, and business locations, to enable mobile receivers to quickly determine driving direction and navigate facilities of an intended service. Users retrieve and navigate such information via a user-friendly, voice recognition based hand-free command system. Other services available are voice messaging between users and voice-activated global web wireless access. The basic architecture and system operation of this wireless application system is shown. A suitable routing strategy is also necessary to forward packets between WLAN segments. A realtime Zone Routing Protocol (ZRP), which combines proactive routing for in-zone traffic and on-demand routing for out-zone traffic, was implemented. Some optimal configurations, such as Early Detection/Termination and Backward Route Accumulation, were made to improve the ZRP performance in mobile wireless network.     An Architectural Framework for Collaboration of Heterogeneous Communication Devices Using WAP and Mobile Device Augmented(MDA)Gateway Integration

    Within the last couple of years, the challenge of displaying collaborative multimedia information has become very important with the large diversity of communication devices such as Personal Computers, laptops, notebooks and handheld devices. The shared data and information may be presented with different views depending on the communication device used by a particular collaborator. The use of various web tools (HTML, WML etc) offers some solutions to the problem but if the target application requires more complex features such as rich multimedia data than is manageable using HTML or WML format, something else need to be done. In this paper, we propose a framework that integrates WAP and MDA Gateway to support collaboration among virtual teams and nomadic workers using heterogeneous communication devices. We then discuss an approach for augmenting mobile device small screen capabilities with surrounding large screen display device

    Smart Signs: Showing the way in Smart Surroundings

    This paper presents a context-aware guidance and messaging system for large buildings and surrounding venues. Smart Signs are a new type of electronic door- and way-sign based on wireless sensor networks. Smart Signs present in-situ personalized guidance and messages, are ubiquitous, and easy to understand. They combine the easiness of use of traditional static signs with the flexibility and reactiveness of navigation systems. The Smart Signs system uses context information such as user’s mobility limitations, the weather, and possible emergency situations to improve guidance and messaging. Minimal infrastructure requirements and a simple deployment tool make it feasible to easily deploy a Smart Signs system on demand. An important design issue of the Smart Signs system is privacy: the system secures communication links, does not track users, allow almost complete anonymous use, and prevent the system to be used as a tool for spying on users
