Shake well before use: Authentication based on Accelerometer Data
Small, mobile devices without user interfaces, such as Bluetooth headsets, often need to communicate securely over wireless networks. Active attacks can only be prevented by authenticating wireless communication, which is problematic when devices do not have any a priori information about each other. We introduce a new method for device-to-device authentication by shaking devices together. This paper describes two protocols for combining cryptographic authentication techniques with known methods of accelerometer data analysis to the effect of generating authenticated, secret keys. The protocols differ in their design, one being more conservative from a security point of view, while the other allows more dynamic interactions. Three experiments are used to optimize and validate our proposed authentication method
Partner selection in indoor-to-outdoor cooperative networks: an experimental study
In this paper, we develop a partner selection protocol for enhancing the
network lifetime in cooperative wireless networks. The case-study is the
cooperative relayed transmission from fixed indoor nodes to a common outdoor
access point. A stochastic bivariate model for the spatial distribution of the
fading parameters that govern the link performance, namely the Rician K-factor
and the path-loss, is proposed and validated by means of real channel
measurements. The partner selection protocol is based on the real-time
estimation of a function of these fading parameters, i.e., the coding gain. To
reduce the complexity of the link quality assessment, a Bayesian approach is
proposed that uses the site-specific bivariate model as a-priori information
for the coding gain estimation. This link quality estimator allows network
lifetime gains almost as if all K-factor values were known. Furthermore, it
suits IEEE 802.15.4 compliant networks as it efficiently exploits the
information acquired from the receiver signal strength indicator. Extensive
numerical results highlight the trade-off between complexity, robustness to
model mismatches and network lifetime performance. We show for instance that
infrequent updates of the site-specific model through K-factor estimation over
a subset of links are sufficient to at least double the network lifetime with
respect to existing algorithms based on path loss information only.Comment: This work has been submitted to IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in

Communication Theoretic Data Analytics
Widespread use of the Internet and social networks invokes the generation of
big data, which is proving to be useful in a number of applications. To deal
with explosively growing amounts of data, data analytics has emerged as a
critical technology related to computing, signal processing, and information
networking. In this paper, a formalism is considered in which data is modeled
as a generalized social network and communication theory and information theory
are thereby extended to data analytics. First, the creation of an equalizer to
optimize information transfer between two data variables is considered, and
financial data is used to demonstrate the advantages. Then, an information
coupling approach based on information geometry is applied for dimensionality
reduction, with a pattern recognition example to illustrate the effectiveness.
These initial trials suggest the potential of communication theoretic data
analytics for a wide range of applications.Comment: Published in IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications, Jan.

On Complexity, Energy- and Implementation-Efficiency of Channel Decoders
Future wireless communication systems require efficient and flexible baseband
receivers. Meaningful efficiency metrics are key for design space exploration
to quantify the algorithmic and the implementation complexity of a receiver.
Most of the current established efficiency metrics are based on counting
operations, thus neglecting important issues like data and storage complexity.
In this paper we introduce suitable energy and area efficiency metrics which
resolve the afore-mentioned disadvantages. These are decoded information bit
per energy and throughput per area unit. Efficiency metrics are assessed by
various implementations of turbo decoders, LDPC decoders and convolutional
decoders. New exploration methodologies are presented, which permit an
appropriate benchmarking of implementation efficiency, communications
performance, and flexibility trade-offs. These exploration methodologies are
based on efficiency trajectories rather than a single snapshot metric as done
in state-of-the-art approaches.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Communication
Monitoring and Fault Location Sensor Network for Underground Distribution Lines
One of the fundamental tasks of electric distribution utilities is guaranteeing a continuous
supply of electricity to their customers. The primary distribution network is a critical part of these
facilities because a fault in it could affect thousands of customers. However, the complexity of
this network has been increased with the irruption of distributed generation, typical in a Smart
Grid and which has significantly complicated some of the analyses, making it impossible to apply
traditional techniques. This problem is intensified in underground lines where access is limited. As a
possible solution, this paper proposes to make a deployment of a distributed sensor network along
the power lines. This network proposes taking advantage of its distributed character to support new
approaches of these analyses. In this sense, this paper describes the aquiculture of the proposed
network (adapted to the power grid) based on nodes that use power line communication and energy
harvesting techniques. In this sense, it also describes the implementation of a real prototype that
has been used in some experiments to validate this technological adaptation. Additionally, beyond
a simple use for monitoring, this paper also proposes the use of this approach to solve two typical
distribution system operator problems, such as: fault location and failure forecasting in power cables.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad, Government of Spain project Sistema Inteligente Inalámbrico para Análisis y Monitorización de Líneas de Tensión Subterráneas en Smart Grids (SIIAM) TEC2013-40767-RMinisterio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte, Government of Spain, for the funding of the scholarship Formación de Profesorado Universitario 2016 (FPU 2016
