On the use of Wireless Sensor Networks in Preventative Maintenance for Industry 4.0
The goal of this paper is to present a literature study on the use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in Preventative Maintenance applications for Industry 4.0. Requirements for industrial applications are discussed along with a comparative of the characteristics of the existing and emerging WSN technology enablers. The design considerations inherent to WSNs becoming a tool to drive maintenance efficiencies are discussed in the context of implementations in the research literature and commercial solutions available on the market
A framework for effective management of condition based maintenance programs in the context of industrial development of E-Maintenance strategies
CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) solutions are increasingly present in industrial systems due to two
main circumstances: rapid evolution, without precedents, in the capture and analysis of data and
significant cost reduction of supporting technologies. CBM programs in industrial systems can become
extremely complex, especially when considering the effective introduction of new capabilities provided
by PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) and E-maintenance disciplines. In this scenario, any CBM
solution involves the management of numerous technical aspects, that the maintenance manager needs
to understand, in order to be implemented properly and effectively, according to the companyâs strategy.
This paper provides a comprehensive representation of the key components of a generic CBM solution,
this is presented using a framework or supporting structure for an effective management of the CBM
programs. The concept âsymptom of failureâ, its corresponding analysis techniques (introduced by ISO
13379-1 and linked with RCM/FMEA analysis), and other international standard for CBM open-software
application development (for instance, ISO 13374 and OSA-CBM), are used in the paper for the
development of the framework. An original template has been developed, adopting the formal structure
of RCM analysis templates, to integrate the information of the PHM techniques used to capture the failure
mode behaviour and to manage maintenance. Finally, a case study describes the framework using the
referred template.Gobierno de AndalucĂa P11-TEP-7303 M
Applications of Wireless Sensor Networks in the Oil, Gas and Resources Industries
The paper provides a study on the use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) in refineries, petrochemicals, underwater development facilities, and oil and gas platforms. The work focuses on networks that monitor the production process, to either prevent or detect health and safety issues or to enhance production. WSN applications offer great opportunities for production optimization where the use of wired counterparts may prove to be prohibitive. They can be used to remotely monitor pipelines, natural gas leaks, corrosion, H2S, equipment condition, and real-time reservoir status. Data gathered by such devices enables new insights into plant operation and innovative solutions that aids the oil, gas and resources industries in improving platform safety, optimizing operations, preventing problems, tolerating errors, and reducing operating costs. In this paper, we survey a number of WSN applications in oil, gas and resources industry operations
An investigation into current production challenges facing the Libyan cement industry and the need for innovative Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) strategy
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate maintenance and production problems in the cement industry in Libya with particular emphasis on future implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Methodology/ Approach - The paper presents the use of case study approach of production data and history, field visits, a survey methodology using a detailed questionnaire with employees and interviews with top and middle managers in four cement factories. Findings - It has been found that the four factories under investigation have low productivity and production levels when compared with the design values. There is no clear TPM strategy and it has been also found that the lack of training and personal development is the main cause of this problem. In addition, employees are found not to be motivated as a result of the lack of poor management strategy and reward structure. Implications - Based on the findings, a new framework for TPM has been developed. This TPM strategy could be implemented in other Libyan factories as a result of the potential similarities in the cultural and environmental aspects. Practical implications - The current challenges have been identified and comparative analysis is developed into a model for the implementation of TPM. Originality/Value of pape r- The paper highlights limitation is the cement factories in Libya in relation to TPM and production strategies. The importance of adopting a realistic strategy and framework by managers is discussed. This work is developed as collaboration between Academia and Libyan Cement industry for solving productivity problems and develop a strategic framework of TPM for improving the Libyan industry
The role of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in industrial oil and gas condition monitoring
Wireless sensor networks have a vast amount of applications including environmental monitoring, military, ecology, agriculture, inventory control, robotics and health care. This paper focuses on the area of monitoring and protection of oil and gas operations using wireless sensor networks that are optimized to decrease installation, and maintenance cost, energy requirements, increase reliability and improve communication efficiency. In addition, simulation experiments using the proposed model are presented. Such models could provide new tools for research in predictive maintenance and condition-based monitoring of factory machinery in general and for âopen architecture machining systemsâ in particular. Wireless sensing no longer needs to be relegated to locations where access is difficult or where cabling is not practical. Wireless condition monitoring systems can be cost effectively implemented in extensive applications that were historically handled by running routes with data collectors. The result would be a lower cost program with more frequent data collection, increased safety, and lower spare parts inventories. Facilities would be able to run leaner because they will have more confidence in their ability to avoid downtime
Applying CBM and PHM concepts with reliability approach for Blowout Preventer (BOP): a literature review
The sensibility originated by the Blowout Preventer (BOP) theme, due to all attention gathered after the Macondo event, established a high level of requirements from regulatory agencies, clients and Drilling Contractors themselves. Based on these pillars, the concept of reliability has been constantly applied in the oil industry, especially in the Well Safety and Control System, where it is extremely important for the equipment to be reliable and operational when required. In parallel, the Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) and Prognostic Health Management (PHM) concepts, widely used in critical industries, which require high reliability levels, are being pointed out as the future for the BOP system management. Within this context, the purpose of this paper is to review the literature on Condition Based Maintenance and Prognostic Health Management, integrated with reliability concepts, and to enable them to be applied in the BOP health management. The paper identifies different concepts needed to support the main theme and, through research and selection criteria, it brings together a set of publications to obtain consistent theoretical framework. This research outlines important techniques used in high reliability industries and the way they can be applied on the BOP system and it also provides many useful references and case studies to assist on further development works in terms of well control and operational safety
Design rules and guidelines for generic condition-based maintenance software's Graphic User Interface
The task of selecting and developing a method of Human Computer Interaction (HCI) for a
Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) system, is investigated in this thesis. Efficiently and
accurately communicating machinery health information extracted from Condition
Monitoring (CM) equipment, to aid and assist plant and machinery maintenance decisions,
is the crux of the problem being researched.
Challenges facing this research include: the multitude of different CM techniques,
developed for measuring different component and machinery condition parameters; the
multitude of different methods of HCI; and the multitude of different ways of
communicating machinery health conditions to CBM practitioners. Each challenge will be
considered whilst pursuing the objective of identifying a generic set of design and
development principles, applicable to the design and development of a CBM system's
Human Machine Interface (HMI). [Continues.
Analysis of medium voltage vacuum switchgear through advanced condition monitoring, trending and diagnostic techniques
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, 2015Electrical utilities are tasked with managing large numbers of assets that have long useful lives and are fairly expensive to replace. With emphasis on medium voltage vacuum circuit breakers, a key challenge is determining when circuit breakers are close to their end-of-life and what the appropriate action at that point in time should be. Condition-based maintenance, intended to âdo only what is required, when it is required,â has been reported as the most effective maintenance strategy for circuit breakers. This dissertation provides an overview, together with laboratory measurements, on non-intrusive technologies and analytics that could reduce maintenance costs, unplanned outages, catastrophic failures and even enhance the reliability and lifetime of circuit breakers by means of a real-time condition monitoring and effective failure prevention maintenance approach. The key areas of research are the condition assessment of the mechanical mechanism based on coil current signature diagnosis, degradation detection of the main interrupting contacts through thermal monitoring and interrupter vacuum integrity assessment based on magnetron atmospheric condition (MAC) testing. The information from test results allows both immediate onsite analysis and trending of key parameters which enables informed asset management decisions to be taken.GS201
