    ON-BOARD MONITORING OF CRACK AND CORROSION USING WIRELESS NETWORK

    Structural health monitoring is an important safety factor in aviation that might benefit from advanced smart systems for damage sensing. This paper presents a new concept for a wireless crack and corrosion detection system for onboard health monitoring of aircraft. The sensor which is use to identify the structural damage and material loss on the surface of the aircraft by Ferrous Fluid under magnetic field. The Ferro fluid shall be applied as an emulsion on the test substrate. When a crack occurs, due to the crack there will a flux leakage. By constantly monitoring the flux on the surface of the substrate, whenever there is a flux leakage we can correlate it to a crack. The Ferro fluid shall be a ferromagnetic material and the particles should be in sub micron or nanometer region. These particles shall be mixed in suitable surfactants to get a uniformly monodispersed emulsion. This emulsion is to be applied on the test substrate and then the flux generated due to the emulsion shall be first measured. This measured flux density shall be taken as the baseline. Any deviation from the baseline shall be considered as flux leakage. It is possible to differentiate between the signals received from a crack and corrosion. One of the advantages of the present set up using Ferrous Fluid Sensor (FFS) for the generation and detection of signals can be easily processed by wireless application. The signal sensed by the FFS is transmitted to the cockpit through the wireless sensor network for monitoring of crack and corrosion on the surface of the aircraft

    Emerging Needs for Pervasive Passive Wireless Sensor Networks on Aerospace Vehicles

    NASA is investigating passive wireless sensor technology to reduce instrumentation mass and volume in ground testing, air flight, and space exploration applications. Vehicle health monitoring systems (VHMS) are desired on all aerospace programs to ensure the safety of the crew and the vehicles. Pervasive passive wireless sensor networks facilitate VHMS on aerospace vehicles. Future wireless sensor networks on board aerospace vehicles will be heterogeneous and will require active and passive network systems. Since much has been published on active wireless sensor networks, this work will focus on the need for passive wireless sensor networks on aerospace vehicles. Several passive wireless technologies such as microelectromechanical systems MEMS, SAW, backscatter, and chipless RFID techniques, have all shown potential to meet the pervasive sensing needs for aerospace VHMS applications. A SAW VHMS application will be presented. In addition, application areas including ground testing, hypersonic aircraft and spacecraft will be explored along with some of the harsh environments found in aerospace applications

    Damage identification in structural health monitoring: a brief review from its implementation to the Use of data-driven applications

    The damage identification process provides relevant information about the current state of a structure under inspection, and it can be approached from two different points of view. The first approach uses data-driven algorithms, which are usually associated with the collection of data using sensors. Data are subsequently processed and analyzed. The second approach uses models to analyze information about the structure. In the latter case, the overall performance of the approach is associated with the accuracy of the model and the information that is used to define it. Although both approaches are widely used, data-driven algorithms are preferred in most cases because they afford the ability to analyze data acquired from sensors and to provide a real-time solution for decision making; however, these approaches involve high-performance processors due to the high computational cost. As a contribution to the researchers working with data-driven algorithms and applications, this work presents a brief review of data-driven algorithms for damage identification in structural health-monitoring applications. This review covers damage detection, localization, classification, extension, and prognosis, as well as the development of smart structures. The literature is systematically reviewed according to the natural steps of a structural health-monitoring system. This review also includes information on the types of sensors used as well as on the development of data-driven algorithms for damage identification.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

The advancement of wireless technology provides a wide range of options for the maritime container terminals. Electronic devices employed in container terminals reduce the manual effort, facilitating timely information flow and enhancing control and quality of service and decision made. In this paper, we examine the technology that can be used to support integration in harbor's logistics. In the literature, most systems have been developed to address specific needs of particular harbors, but a systematic study is missing. The purpose is to provide an overview to the reader about which technology of integrated logistics can be implemented and what remains to be addressed in the future

    Performance testing of a low power consumption wireless sensor communication system integrated with an energy harvesting power source

    This paper presents the performance testing results of a wireless sensor communication system with low power consumption integrated with a vibration energy harvesting power source. The experiments focus on the system’s capability to perform continuous monitoring and to wirelessly transmit the data acquired from the sensors to a user base station, completely battery-free. Energy harvesting technologies together with system design optimisation for power consumption minimisation ensure the system’s energy autonomous capability demonstrated in this paper by presenting the promising testing results achieved following its integration with Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and Body Area Network (BAN) applications

    Design and simulation of a multi-function MEMS sensor for health and usage monitoring.

    Health and usage monitoring as a technique for online test, diagnosis or prognosis of structures and systems has evolved as a key technology for future critical systems. The technology, often referred to as HUMS is usually based around sensors that must be more reliable than the system or structure they are monitoring. This paper proposes a fault tolerant sensor architecture and demonstrates the feasibility of realising this architecture through the design of a dual mode humidity/pressure MEMS sensor with an integrated temperature function. The sensor has a simple structure, good linearity and sensitivity, and the potential for implementation of built-in-self-test features. We also propose a re-configurable sensor network based on the multi-functional sensor concept that supports both normal operational and fail safe modes. The architecture has the potential to significantly increase system reliability and supports a reduction in the number of sensors required in future HUMS devices. The technique has potential in a wide range of applications, especially within wireless sensor networks
