    Virtual reality and body rotation: 2 flight experiences in comparison

    Embodied interfaces, represented by devices that incorporate bodily motion and proprioceptive stimulation, are promising for Virtual Reality (VR) because they can improve immersion and user experience while at the same time reducing simulator sickness compared to more traditional handheld interfaces (e.g.,gamepads). The aim of the study is to evaluate a novel embodied interface called VitruvianVR. The machine is composed of two separate rings that allow its users to bodily rotate onto three different axes. The suitability of the VitruvianVR was tested in a Virtual Reality flight scenario. In order to reach the goal we compared the VitruvianVR to a gamepad using perfomance measures (i.e., accuracy, fails), head movements and position of the body.     Designing for self-transcendent experiences in virtual reality

    This thesis contributes to Psychology and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research with a focus on the design of immersive experiences that support self-transcendence. Self-transcendence is defined as a decrease in a sense of self and a increase in unity with the world. It can change what individuals know and value, their perspective on the world and life, evolving them as a grown person. Consequently, self-transcendence is gaining attention in Psychology, Philosophy, and Neuroscience. But, we are still far from understanding the complex phenomenological and neurocognitive aspects of self-transcendence, as well as its implications for individual growth and psychological well-being. In reviewing the methods for studying self-transcendence, we found differing conceptual models determine different ways for understanding and studying self-transcendence. Understanding self-transcendence is made especially challenging because of its ineffable qualities and extraordinary conditions in which it takes place. For that reason, researchers have began to look at technological solutions for both eliciting self-transcendence to better study it under controlled and replicable conditions as well as giving people greater access to the experience. We reviewed immersive, interactive technologies that aim to support positive experiences such as self-transcendence and extracted a set of design considerations that were prevalent across experiences. We then explored two different focuses of self-transcendence: awe and lucid dreaming. First, we took an existing VR experience designed specifically to support the self-transcendent experience of awe and looked at how the mindset and physical setting surrounding that VR experience might better support the experience of and accommodation of awe. Second, we delved deep into lucid dreaming to better understand the aspects that could help inform the design of an immersive experience that supports self-transcendence. We put those design ideas into practice by developing a neurofeedback system that aims to support lucid dreaming practices in an immersive experience. Through these review papers and design explorations, we contribute to the understanding of how one might design and evaluate immersive technological experiences that support varieties of self-transcendence. We hope to inspire more work in this area that holds promise in better understanding human nature and living our best lives

    The Gamification Framework of Military Flight Simulator for Effective Learning and Training Environment

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop a framework for the gamification of flight simulators to provide an active learning and training environment for military jet pilots. Currently, with the development of visual displays and computer processing capabilities, the modern simulator has made great progress in visual and auditory terms that is incomparable to the past. In addition, functions that were previously implemented through supercomputers and complex hardware devices are now available through desktop computers at an affordable cost. Despite these advances, the simulators so far are thought to have been negligent in building an active learning and training environment for users, focusing only on such things as sound and visual immersion and training requirements. On top of that, misbelief in the effectiveness of pilots\u27 flight simulators, old paradigms failing to keep up with computer technology, and lack of instructor manpower have not led to the progress of simulator training programs. Meanwhile, studies show that the gamified system, which has become an increasingly hot topic in business, health care, and education over the past decade, has made users more motivated and actively engaged in the use of specific platforms. And the resulting effect was also positive. This Research aimed: (1) to examine a research-based Gamification Framework to understand the concept of a gamified system, (2) to identify pilots\u27 flight training needs and motivations, (3) and finally to suggest evaluation tool with example. The Gamification Framework of Flight Simulator(GFFS) was designed on the basis of research and a survey conducted for Korean Air Force fighter pilots for detailed Gamified Flight Simulator(GFS) evaluation tool. GFFS was modified and applied from Kim\u27s gamification framework and the Octalysis framework was used to identify and compare pilots\u27 needs and motivation factors

    Theatre, performance and digital culture

    A thesis submitted to the University of Wolverhampton in partial fulfilment of the requirement of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.This thesis proposes that the theory of aesthetic agency derived from gaming in digital culture may be used as a lens through which live theatre and performance may be analysed. I argue that the aesthetics, immersion and play with identity in live theatre and performance are informed by digital culture through the behaviour and agency of the participants, be they audience or participants. Using a grounded theory methodological approach, four large-scale outdoor immersive productions and two traditional theatrical productions have been selected to provide a comparative analysis using aesthetic agency. Aesthetic agency is central to the analysis of immersion and play with identity in the productions selected. Comprising intention, perceivable consequence, narrative potential, transformation, co-presence and presence aesthetic agency is the feeling of pleasure audience and participants derive through the experience of live theatre and performance. Analysis using aesthetic agency in immersive productions examines qualities such as interaction and participation, discovery, understanding social rules, proximity to points of engagement within the performance, the use of narrative or gameplay, liminality and the suspension of disbelief and the use of physical or imaginary boundaries. Aesthetic agency in play with identity uses qualities of transportation, presence and co-presence and is analysed using themes of liminality, ritual, agency and memory which offer the opportunity of real experience within the virtual environments. The outcomes of the study highlight the opportunities to analyse and understand the meaning making process in live theatre and performance in a new manner through the lens of aesthetic agency derived from digital culture. Through examples, the outcomes show how digital culture theory may be used in live theatre and performance to examine and explain the experience for spectators and participants. The future use of aesthetic agency as a dramaturgical tool then becomes a possibility which may enhance the development process and enrich the subsequent experience of spectators and participants. Further, aesthetic agency may find utility as a dramaturgical tool when used to aid the creation of new live productions
