Transition to Science 2.0:‘remoralizing’ the economy of science

The present is a moment of crisis and transition, both generally and specifically in “knowledge” and its institutions. Acknowledging this elicits the key questions: where are we? Where are we headed? What, if anything, can be done about this? And what can the “economics of science” contribute to this? This paper assumes a “cultural political economy of research & innovation” (CPERI) perspective to explore the current upheaval and transition in the system of academic knowledge production, at the confluence of accelerating commercialisation and the seemingly opposing movement of “open science.” This perspective affords a characterisation of the core of the current crises as a crisis of moral economy; an issue to which a political economy of epistemic authority is in turn crucial. A “remoralizing” of knowledge production is thus a matter of key systemic importance, though it is important to understand such developments in power-strategic, and not explicitly moral, terms. Much of the current moves towards “open science” and “massively open online courses” (MOOCs) can also then be seen as self-defeating developments that simply exacerbate the crisis of a viable “economy of science” and in no sense its solution. Their lasting significance, however, is more likely to lie precisely in their effects on the construction of a new moral economy of knowledge production

Desarrollo de una plataforma para la docencia basada en Raspberry Pi

La gran utilización, y cada vez más frecuente, de sistemas informáticos como herramienta para la actividad docente ha tenido un gran impacto en el mundo de la enseñanza. Este hecho ha agilizado y ha hecho mucho más confortable y directo el acceso a las diversas fuentes de conocimiento de la materia a estudiar. Estando ya muy desarrollado el uso de ordenadores e Internet como medios para obtener y consultar información e incluso evaluar los conocimientos adquiridos, en este trabajo de fin de grado se pretende que alumnos que no poseen los medios suficientes o que simplemente por motivos de movilidad no disponen de una conexión a Internet, puedan acceder a los materiales de una asignatura mediante esta plataforma. Para el desarrollo del trabajo se ha construido una aplicación docente que permite realizar ejercicios relacionados con la asignatura en forma de cuestionarios. Se ha portado esta herramienta a una plataforma Raspberry Pi (computador de bajo coste basado en el procesador ARM). De esta forma, debido a las reducidas dimensiones del dispositivo se podría realizar su préstamo al alumno, el cual podría acceder a este contenido conectando la Raspberry Pi directamente a un televisor e interactuando con la aplicación con el propio mando a distancia de la televisión. El trabajo se enmarca en un proyecto de innovación docente que pretende además proporcionar una visión global de la implantación de estos dispositivos para pequeñas aplicaciones abaratando costes en la obtención de equipos más sofisticados cuyas capacidades muchas veces están sobredimensionadas sobre su utilización real. Este trabajo implica por lo tanto el desarrollo de una aplicación para Raspberry Pi, incluyendo su puesta en marcha (configuración del sistema operativo) y la portabilidad a esta plataforma de otro sistema ya implementado.The wide and frequent use of computer systems as a tool for teaching has had a great impact in the world of education. This fact has made faster and more comfortable and direct the access to the different sources of knowledge of the subject studied. Being already developed the use of computers and the Internet as an intermediary to obtain and query information and even evaluate the knowledge acquired, this project try that the student who do not have sufficient means or simply, for no mobility, not have an Internet connection, they can access the materials for a subject through this platform. For the project development has been built a teaching program to make related exercises of the subject in form of questionnaires. This tool has been ported to Raspberry Pi (low cost computer based on the ARM processor) platform. Thus, due to the small size of the device could make its more attractive for the student, which may access to this content connecting the Raspberry Pi directly to a TV and interacting with the application with this television remote control. The work is a teaching innovation project also created to provide an overview of the integration of these devices for small applications in order to reduce costs in obtaining more sophisticated equipment whose capabilities are often oversized to its actual use. Therefore, this work involves the development of an application for Raspberry Pi, including its implementation (operating system configuration) and portability to this platform the other developed teaching application.Ingeniería Informátic

Democracia Digital : espacio público, Procomún y Populismo

La presente tesis tiene como objetivo analizar las claves del espacio público de deliberación política en su relación con nuevos movimientos políticos como el populismo. Las nuevas formas de comunicación digitales de las últimas décadas conforman cambios sustanciales en el intercambio de información y la transmisión de los contenidos de carácter político, que se hacen virales en virtud de su capacidad de polarización. El trabajo está dividido en dos partes: La primera se dedica a la descripción y crítica de las formas contemporáneas imperantes en el ámbito digital y su extensión a todos los ámbitos de la vida humana. Tanto la distribución de contenidos en las redes sociales como la extensión de la hiperconexión tanto de los individuos como de los objetos que nos rodean están determinados por la gestión algorítmica del presente. Las nuevas formas de inteligencia artificial configuran la identidad y la vida tanto pública como privada de forma binaria, única forma en la que los algoritmos son capaces de tratar la información. Esto genera nuevas formas de polarización y enfrentamiento político. Incapaz de dar cuenta de lo humano, el algoritmo trabaja desde una aparente objetividad clasificando a las personas en categorías binarias como abierto/cerrado, dentro/fuera, inocente/culpable, etc..

Geographies of the University

This open access volume raises awareness of the histories, geographies, and practices of universities and analyzes their role as key actors in today’s global knowledge economy. Universities are centers of research, teaching, and expertise with significant economic, social, and cultural impacts at different geographical scales. Scholars from a variety of disciplines and countries offer original analyses and discussions along five main themes: historical perspectives on the university as a site of knowledge production, cultural encounter, and political interest; institutional perspectives on university governance and the creation of innovative environments; relationships between universities and the city; the impact of universities on national and regional economies and cultures; and the processes of internationalization through student mobility, the creation of education hubs, and global regionalism in higher education

Los estudios hispánicos como puente: coordinación y análisis de la calidad de actividades didácticas colectivas de difusión de la narrativa oral China

[ES] A la fragmentación de la comunidad de la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de español se suma la ausencia de una metodología científica que analice la calidad de las actividades educativas y culturales que se realizan en este ámbito académico. De esta forma no se valora su margen de mejora, su impacto ni su pertinencia reales. Propongo en esta investigación un modelo de planificación, ejecución y evaluación cualitativa y cuantitativa que permita conocer el grado de excelencia en la gestión y la satisfacción de sus participantes y destinatarios. El ámbito en el que se ha llevado a cabo esta propuesta ha sido la Enseñanza Superior de la República Popular China, donde he trabajado siete años. Entre 2017 y 2020 he cofundado con mis alumnos y coordinado la iniciativa colectiva Puente con el objetivo de demostrar que los estudios hispánicos tienen el potencial de reducir el desconocimiento cultural y la falta de comunicación e integración de la comunidad educativa, y plantear una serie de objetivos en común. Las redes sociales, la difusión de la narrativa oral china y una actitud comunicativa han servido como elementos unificadores para la celebración de cinco actividades a nivel nacional con un fin didáctico, académico y divulgativo. La meta propuesta supone una innovación y un complemento a la enseñanza reglada en el análisis del complejo contexto previo local más allá del aula. Tanto la metodología utilizada como los resultados obtenidos pueden resultar de utilidad para futuros estudios vinculados con la organización de eventos de enseñanza y aprendizaje no solo de español, sino también de otras lenguas y en otros entornos educativos. Y, en especial, tienen el potencial de promover el acercamiento y el entendimiento ante el creciente clima de tensión internacional. [EN] The community made up of the teachers and students of Spanish is fragmented. In addition, there is no scientific methodology to analyze the quality of the educational and cultural activities carried out in this field, so neither their room for improvement nor their real impact and relevance are assessed. In this research, a model for planning these activities, implementing them, and evaluating them both qualitatively and quantitatively is proposed. This will allow to measure the excellence in the management of the activities, as well as the satisfaction of its participants and target audience. This research was carried out within the context of higher education in the People’s Republic of China, where I have worked for seven years. Between 2017 and 2020 I co-founded the initiative Puente with my students and coordinated it. The aim of this initiative was to show that Hispanic studies have the potential to reduce the lack of cultural awareness and the lack of communication and integration within the educational community. In addition, the initiative aimed to establish common goals. Social media, along with the dissemination of Chinese oral narrative and a communicative attitude, served as unifying elements to celebrate nationwide activities with a didactic, academic, and informative purpose. The objective of this initiative involves innovation and means a complement to formal teaching in the analysis of the complex local context outside the classroom. Both the methodology used, and the results obtained may be useful for future studies related to the organization of teaching and learning events, also for other languages and in other educational contexts. These events can promote friendliness and understanding amid the growing international tension
