    The Wireless Craze, The Unlimited Bandwidth Myth, The Spectrum Auction Faux Pas, and the Punchline to Ronald Coase's 'Big Joke': An Essay on Airwave Allocation Policy

    In 1959 the Federal Communications Commission invited economist Ronald Coase to testify about his proposal for market allocation of radio spectrum rights. The FCC's first question: 'Is this all a big joke'' Today, however, leading policy makers, including the current FCC Chair, decry the 'spectrum drought' produced by administrative allocation and call for the creation of private bandwidth markets. This essay examines marketplace trends driving regulators' change of humor, and considers the path of spectrum policy liberalization in light of emerging technologies, theories of unlimited bandwidth, reforms such as FCC license auctions, and recent progress in deregulating wireless markets in the U.S. and around the globe.

    Sensing and Visualizing Social Context from Spatial Proximity

    The concept of pervasive computing, as introduced by Marc Weiser under the name ubiquitous computing in the early 90s, spurred research into various kinds of context-aware systems and applications. There is a wide range of contextual parameters, including location, time, temperature, devices and people in proximity, which have been part of the initial ideas about context-aware computing. While locational context is already a well understood concept, social context---based on the people around us---proves to be harder to grasp and to operationalize. This work continues the line of research into social context, which is based on the proximity and meeting patterns of people in the physical space. It takes this research out of the lab and out of well controlled situations into our urban environments, which are full of ambiguity and opportunities. The key to this research is the tool that caused dramatic change in individual and collective behavior during the last 20 years and which is a manifestation of many of the ideas of the pervasive computing paradigm: the mobile phone. In this work, the mobile is regarded as a proxy for people. Through it, the social environment becomes accessible to digital measurement and processing. To understand the large amount of data that now becomes available to automatic measurement, we will turn to the discipline of social network analysis. It provides powerful methods, that are able to condense data and extract relevant meaning. Visualization helps to understand and interpret the results. This thesis contains a number of experiments, that demonstrate how the automatic measurement of social proximity data through Bluetooth can be used to measure variables of personal behavior, group behavior and the behavior of groups in relation to places. The principal contributions are: * A methodology to visualize personal social context by using an ego proximity network. Specific episodes can be localized and compared. * method to compare different days in terms of social context, e.g. to support automatic diary applications. * A method to compose social geographic maps. Locations of similar social context are detected and combined. * Functions to measure short-term changes in social activity, based on the distinction between strange and familiar devices. * The characterization of Bluetooth inquiries for social proximity sensing. * A dataset of Bluetooth sightings from an ego perspective in seven different settings. Additionally, some settings feature multiple stationary scanners and Cell-ID measurements. * Soft- and hardware to capture, collect, store and analyze Bluetooth proximity data

Long considered important pillars of the scientific method, Modelling and Simulation have evolved from traditional discrete numerical methods to complex data-intensive continuous analytical optimisations. Resolution, scale, and accuracy have become essential to predict and analyse natural and complex systems in science and engineering. When their level of abstraction raises to have a better discernment of the domain at hand, their representation gets increasingly demanding for computational and data resources. On the other hand, High Performance Computing typically entails the effective use of parallel and distributed processing units coupled with efficient storage, communication and visualisation systems to underpin complex data-intensive applications in distinct scientific and technical domains. It is then arguably required to have a seamless interaction of High Performance Computing with Modelling and Simulation in order to store, compute, analyse, and visualise large data sets in science and engineering. Funded by the European Commission, cHiPSet has provided a dynamic trans-European forum for their members and distinguished guests to openly discuss novel perspectives and topics of interests for these two communities.     A framework for automated heart and lung sound analysis using a mobile telemedicine platform

In recent years, mobile phones have become increasingly complex and ubiquitous. These devices present a tremendous opportunity to provide low-cost diagnostics to under-served populations and to connect non-experts with experts. This thesis explores the capture of cardiac and respiratory sounds on a mobile phone for analysis, with the long-term aim of developing intelligent algorithms for the detection of heart and respiratory-related problems. Using standard labeled databases, existing and novel algorithms are developed to analyze cardiac and respiratory audio data. In order to assess the algorithms' performance under field conditions, a low-cost stethoscope attachment is constructed and data is collected using a mobile phone. Finally, a telemedicine infrastructure and work-flow is described, in which these algorithms can be deployed and trained in a large-scale deployment.by Katherine L. Kuan.M.Eng

Aquestes metodologies clàssiques i fonamentades només permeten extreure dades cognitives, és a dir les dades que l'usuari és capaç de comunicar de manera conscient. L'objectiu de la tesi és proposar un model basat en l'extracció de dades biomètriques per complementar amb dades emotives (i formals) la informació cognitiva abans esmentada. Aquesta tesi no és només teòrica, ja que juntament amb el model proposat (i la seva evolució) es mostren les diferents proves, validacions i investigacions en què s'han aplicat, sovint en conjunt amb grups de recerca d'altres àrees amb èxit.En esta tesis se exploran las diferentes metodologías de análisis de la experiencia UX desde una visión centrada en usuario. Estas metodologías clásicas y fundamentadas solamente permiten extraer datos cognitivos, es decir los datos que el usuario es capaz de comunicar de manera consciente. El objetivo de la tesis es proponer un modelo basado en la extracción de datos biométricos para complementar con datos emotivos (y formales) la información cognitiva antes mencionada. Esta tesis no es solamente teórica, ya que junto con el modelo propuesto (y su evolución) se muestran las diferentes pruebas, validaciones e investigaciones en la que se han aplicado, a menudo en conjunto con grupos de investigación de otras áreas con éxito.In this thesis, the different methodologies for analyzing the UX experience are explored from a user-centered perspective. These classical and well-founded methodologies only allow the extraction of cognitive data, that is, the data that the user is capable of consciously communicating. The objective of this thesis is to propose a methodology that uses the extraction of biometric data to complement the aforementioned cognitive information with emotional (and formal) data. This thesis is not only theoretical, since the proposed model (and its evolution) is complemented with the different tests, validations and investigations in which they have been applied, often in conjunction with research groups from other areas with success

For the purposes of this protocol, providing amplification includes the processes of prescribing a hearing aid (air or bone conduction) and/or other hearing assistance technologies based on appropriate assessment information, verification that the specified acoustical performance targets have been achieved, fitting the device on the child, and ongoing evaluation of device effectiveness in daily life.
