Who wants to be a Physical Education Teacher? A Case Study of a Non-Traditional Undergraduate Student in a Physical Education Teacher Education Program

    Get PDF
Forty percent of undergraduate students are non-traditional students. The purpose of this study was to identify what attracted the participant to physical education, identify what situational/social factors facilitated the career choice, and the beliefs of the participant about what it meant to be a physical educator. The study consisted of one male non-traditional student. Artifacts, observation, and interview methods were employed to gain an understanding of why the participant wanted to become a physical educator and what were the beliefs of the participant about physical education teaching or teachers. Findings indicated the participant was attracted to physical education by his love for physical activity, sport, and the chance to work with youth. His socialization into physical education was influenced by situational and social factors, such as positive experiences with a teacher/coach, positive support of family and friends, and his strong beliefs/values for physical education/teaching

    An Equal Opportunity Rejection

Let’s talk about applications. We’ve all been there. You write your application, work on draft after draft and then you send it all off to the college or job of your dreams. And you wait
and wait
and wait. You wait for some sort of letter or phone call that says something along the lines of, “We love you! You’re awesome, and smart and special, and we think you’d be a great asset!” And maybe you’re lucky and you do get that letter, but let’s be real - that doesn’t always happen. It can be frustrating to receive a rejection letter (or nothing at all), because in all honesty, who wants to be told that they’re “not good enough”? Not me. [excerpt

Can the University of Maine afford to concede to its regional competitors? A 21st century road map for postsecondary language education

The University of Maine Flagship Match program is designed to recruit students from neighboring states and offset enrollment declines. However, language faculty retrenchment at the university a decade ago, combined with the effective double-degree programs with languages, STEM, and other subjects that other regional flagships offer and recent changes in New England’s K–12 graduation options, makes it harder for UMaine to attract high-performing students. If the university wants to compete with others in New England and attract students who focus on global professional issues, it has an opportunity it cannot afford to miss. Adapting one of the language education models other universities have successfully implemented may be the way to move forward in the twenty-first century, making the University of Maine an important regional player.Accepted manuscrip

Barack Obama: From an End to Terror to Drone Wars and ISIS

    Get PDF
Barack Obama attempted to recalibrate presidential rhetoric on the terror threat. He made far fewer speeches about terrorism than George W. Bush did. Yet, despite some efforts to the contrary, he continued many of Bush’s policies—and in the case of targeted assassinations using drones (unmanned aerial vehicles), went further than Bush. The analysis of Obama’s rhetoric on terrorism shows a president who both wants to distance himself from his predecessor and one who wants to be seen as tough on terrorism. In the final analysis, Obama’s rhetoric and policies hewed rather closely to George W. Bush’s. This chapter raises questions about how the terror threat can be recalibrated given Obama’s failure to properly evaluate the threat from ISIS. It also shows that presidents do not need to speak much about an issue when policies to deal with it have already been passed

Time Crunch: How to Fit Assessment into an Already Packed Lesson

    Get PDF
Learning assessment can be daunting for a librarian who wants to try it out for the first time, or too time consuming for librarians who only get a few minutes with students. But this practical program introduces librarians to common, easy, and quick formative assessments that can immediately be implemented into even the shortest of sessions. This session will help librarians identify key points in example lessons where formative assessment can be inserted, and brainstorm ways to implement the assessments in an effective way

    Broken Technologies

There are many possible definitions of “technology” and I will discuss some of these in this book. However, in this introduction let me use a definition of Svante Lindqvist who defines technology very intuitively as “those activities, directed towards the satisfaction of human wants, which produce change in the material world.” He says also “the distinction between human “wants” and more limited human “needs” is crucial, for we do not use technology only to satisfy our essential material requirements.” Consequently, from this perspective, a technology that is “broken” could be defined as those activities, directed towards the satisfaction of human wants that are intended to produce changes in the material world that either do not manage to satisfy these wants or do not produce changes in the material world, or both. Exploring where Designers and Non-Designers meet within the Service Organisation: Considering the value designers bring to the service design process

    Get PDF
Service design is sometimes thought of as the interface between the customer and the service provider, a design process that exists between design thinking and business practices. Service design consultancies working with service organisations are increasingly attempting to develop design thinking alongside business processes within the organisation, but if everyone becomes a ‘designer’ what value is placed on the design-trained service designer? What qualities, knowledge and skills does a designer offer that identifies them as a valuable business asset who has an integral place within the business process, rather than as someone brought in when the organisation wants to be seen to be ‘creative’ or ‘innovative.’ The process of design for services is well documented, however there is not much debate around whether the service designer needs to be design-trained, or of what benefits they would offer if they were. It is assumed that design tools and methods can be introduced and disseminated to non-designers, but if tools and methods are all it took to design services, what is the future for the ‘designer?’ From observations of students studying service design at postgraduate level and a comparative study with design and non-design staff within a service organisation, this paper aims to uncover the value and ‘craft’ of the designer within the context of the service design process

North Sumatra Farmer Behavior in Determining Level of Consumption: Islamic Economic Philosophy

    Get PDF
Persons are creatures of Allah SWT who have advantages over other creatures, i.e., having reason and lust. If a person's wants and needs are met, he will feel comfortable, happy, and relieved. Behavior can be defined as the actions of humans who carry out theories. In North Sumatra, especially plantation farmers who are Muslim, consuming cannot be separated from their position of faith. Faith is an important measure because it shares a point of view that tends to influence human character and attitude. It dramatically affects the quantity and quality of consumption through material or spiritual satisfaction. Then it forms the attitude of consumption trends in the market. From the results researched, the authors found a way of consumption for plantation farmers by prioritizing Halal and cleanliness principles, simplicity, generosity, justice, and morality in life. Therefore, the author wants to explain the need for guidance to harmonize human behavior based on economic concepts in Islamic Economic Philosophy as a benchmark that will give birth to Islamic thought. If implemented, it will lead to the pattern of an attitude of plantation farmers in determining the level of consumption in North Sumatra, which is worth Islamic worship. Keywords: Consumption Behavior, Farmers, Islamic Economic Philosoph
