Managers Matter: Who Manages New Zealand's Volunteers?

In partnership with Volunteering New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington undertook a nationwide survey of volunteer managers between December 2009 and February 2010. The research was funded by a Tindall Foundation grant. The online survey was open to anyone involved in the management of volunteers. Over 800 individuals participated from a diverse range of sectors and positions across New Zealand. To benchmark the New Zealand volunteer management profession, selected findings are compared to similar overseas studies, from Canada (Zarinpoush et al., 2004), the UK (Machin and Ellis Paine, 2008), and globally (People First - Total Solutions, 2008)

M-grid: Using Ubiquitous Web Technologies to create a Computational Grid

There are many potential users and uses for grid computing. However, the concept of sharing computing resources excites security concerns and, whilst being powerful and flexible, at least for novices, existing systems are complex to install and use. Together these represent a significant barrier to potential users who are interested to see what grid computing can do. This paper describes m-grid, a system for building a computational grid which can accept tasks from any user with access to a web browser and distribute them to almost any machine with access to the internet and manages to do this without the installation of additional software or interfering with existing security arrangements

This paper examines the individuation of Potter and Voldemort in Harry Potter series. To be a holistic individual, a person needs to be individuated by managing their three main archetypes. The three main archetypes are persona, shadow, and anima or animus. Potter and Voldemort have to manage their archetypes their journey as human beings. Each of them has to know his persona including his appearance, behavior and role; confront his shadow; and balance his anima. In the end, Potter manages himself to be a individuated person who can lead a good life, while Voldemort fails to be an individuated person and, as a result, he died

Predicting Potential For Promotion: How The Data In Human Resource Information Systems Can Be Used To Help Organizations Gain Competitive Advantage

This paper utilizes the data contained in the Human Resources Information System (HRIS) of a company, called here “Engineering Solutions,” and analyzes the drivers of potential for promotion among a sample of engineers. The methods used consist of basic statistical procedures, multiple regressions, ordered logits, and decompositions. The results show which variables are the main drivers of potential for promotion in this organization, which are minor drivers, and which do not matter at all

Keeping Our Best: Econometric Analysis of Retention and Performance at Engineering Solutions

This study analyzes the retention and performance of 100 engineers who started work at “Engineering Solutions” in 1996, of whom 65 were still with the firm in 2002. The retention analysis shows that the firm retained disproportionately the better performers, those with the psychological attributes that make for greater success, those with greater work attachment, and those with fewer dependent-related job issues. The performance analysis shows that the top-rated engineers are primarily those who exhibit favorable psychological characteristics, that a few other characteristics make a small difference to performance, and that the remaining variables make no difference at all

Two Lawyers, One Client, and the Duty to Communicate: A Gap in Rules 1.2 and 1.4

[Excerpt] “There may have been a day in which most American legal matters involved one client and one lawyer, but that day has surely passed. People today travel widely, businesses sell their goods and services across the country, and activity of all sorts—both legal and illegal—can be carried out in cyberspace. In such a society the laws of multiple jurisdictions can be relevant to the broad range of client circumstances. At the same time, legal issues have become increasingly complex, forcing lawyers to make referrals to outside specialists. In addition, some transactions or litigation matters may simply be too large for one attorney or even one law firm to handle. The result of these and other forces is that it is quite common for a lawyer to represent a client in concert with lawyers from other firms. Unfortunately, the rules of ethics pay scant attention to these multiple-lawyer, multi-firm situations. Among the most basic issues facing lawyers who share a representation is the question of who is responsible for maintaining communications with the client. Much of the time, no doubt, little thought is given to the ethical requirements of communication, and the lawyers and client informally develop a group dynamic that successfully manages the flow of information. Nevertheless, in those instances in which problems arise, it may be necessary to ask which attorney has or had the responsibility to keep the client apprised of developments in the legal matter. This article will address that question.
